Seattle-based biotech startup ZipBio announced a $4 million seed round in September 2024, led by NFX, with MoreVC also participating. The company describes its work as “compressing” biology: designing smaller therapeutic genes and proteins intended to retain useful biological functions. That is a drug-design goal, not a way to shrink or store protein data. The announcement described early research and a planned development milestone; it does not establish clinical benefit or confirm the company’s current status.

What ZipBio means by “compressing” proteins

ZipBio says it uses generative AI and protein-design methods to combine biological functions in more compact molecules. In this context, “compression” refers to designing smaller therapeutic molecules, not conventional file compression or simply shortening a genetic sequence.

The distinction matters: a smaller molecule is not automatically more effective, easier to deliver, or safer. The launch-era materials describe ZipBio’s approach and goals, but do not provide independent validation that its designs improve efficacy, delivery, or patient outcomes.

What ZipBio announced about its pipeline

In a September 9, 2024 press release republished by WebWire, ZipBio described an initial ophthalmology pipeline addressing wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD), geographic atrophy (GA), diabetic macular edema (DME), and glaucoma. The company identified a pan-VEGF inhibitor for wet AMD as its lead candidate.

  • FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
  • TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
  • CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
  • EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.
  • If you’re not in love with it for whatever reason, we’ll give you a full replacement or refund—no questions asked. If you have any doubt, please tell us. With nothing to worry about, or even to share with your friends, try it now.

ZipBio said it had completed in-vivo proof-of-concept studies for the candidate and expected IND clearance in 2026. IND clearance is a development milestone associated with permission to begin human clinical testing; the 2024 announcement was a forecast, not evidence that clearance occurred. The available sources do not confirm whether that anticipated milestone was met or whether the candidate entered clinical trials.

Who funded the round and what the company planned

GeekWire reported on September 5, 2024, that NFX led ZipBio’s $4 million seed round. The company’s September 9 announcement also named MoreVC as a participant. ZipBio said it planned to use the funding to grow its team and advance work in ophthalmology, gene therapy, and oncology.

GeekWire identified Roee Farber as CEO and co-founder, alongside co-founders Ariel J. Ben-Sasson, Ori Hassin, and Ori Zelichov. The report described offices in Seattle and Tel Aviv. ZipBio’s press release presents the company as founded in 2023.

Other work and partnerships named at launch

The company said it was working with external partner Genethon on a gene therapy for Glycogen Storage Disorder III muscular dystrophy. It also described itself as partnered with NVIDIA and Google Cloud. The announcement did not specify the scope or terms of those relationships, so it does not establish a particular product integration or commercial arrangement.

What the announcement does—and does not—show

The funding and pipeline details are a snapshot of ZipBio’s launch-era plans, not a measure of current company performance. The reported seed round indicates investor backing for early development; it does not show that a candidate is approved, has demonstrated clinical benefit, or has reached patients. Likewise, the company’s “compression” framing is not itself evidence that a smaller design preserves therapeutic function.

For this story, GeekWire’s September 5, 2024 report covered the launch, funding, leadership, locations, and high-level platform description. ZipBio’s September 9, 2024 announcement, republished by WebWire, supplied the pipeline, proof-of-concept, milestone, and partnership claims. Those latter claims should be understood as company-reported. Neither source establishes ZipBio’s later financing, present operating status, or the outcome of its expected 2026 milestone.
