Borrowing costs depend on the loan, the borrower and the lender—not just a headline rate. Freddie Mac’s September 24, 2026 survey put the average U.S. 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 7.03% and the 15-year rate at 6.42%. Those are national benchmarks, not personal quotes, and they cannot be compared directly with a car-loan offer.
What are mortgage rates right now?
Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey reported a 7.03% average for U.S. 30-year fixed-rate mortgages and 6.42% for 15-year fixed-rate mortgages on September 24, 2026. The 30-year average was 6.95% the preceding week, on September 17. That one-week change is context, not enough by itself to establish a lasting trend. Freddie Mac’s weekly survey is based on loan applications submitted by lenders through its Loan Product Advisor.
A separate Freddie Mac page snapshot dated October 1, 2026 displayed 7.28% for a 30-year fixed mortgage and 6.60% for a 15-year fixed mortgage. Those are observations for a different date and page context, not the September 24 survey figures. Check the date attached to any rate you see; a weekly national average should not be presented as a live quote.
Why your mortgage offer may differ
The survey averages applications, not approved offers to every borrower. Your quote can vary with your financial circumstances and the lender’s terms. Freddie Mac also notes that fees and points are not always available in its current collection process, so the published rate does not capture every cost of borrowing. Compare written offers and their fees rather than assuming the national figure is what you will pay.

What a higher rate does to a payment
For a fixed-rate mortgage, the interest rate affects the principal-and-interest payment over the life of the loan. A higher rate generally means a higher payment for the same loan amount and term, and more interest paid if the loan is kept for the same period. The actual monthly housing cost also depends on items such as taxes, insurance and other charges, which are not captured by the mortgage rate alone.
Why mortgage and car-loan rates are not interchangeable
A mortgage and an auto loan finance different purchases and can have different terms, fees and borrower pricing. Freddie Mac’s mortgage average is not an auto-loan benchmark, and the available CFPB figures on auto lending describe loan activity—not interest rates. The CFPB reported 2.1 million auto loans originated and $64.0 billion in new auto-loan volume in February 2026; originations were up 5.1% year over year. These measures show market activity, but they do not say what rate a borrower received or why borrowing feels expensive. CFPB consumer credit trends data.

Interest rate vs. APR: what should you compare?
The interest rate is the cost of borrowing expressed as a rate. APR incorporates fees and charges as well, making it useful for comparing suitable offers with similar terms. APR is not a complete decision rule: product structure matters, and the CFPB cautions that APR has limitations for adjustable-rate mortgages. For mortgages, review the Loan Estimate, including points and charges, and compare offers with the same loan amount, term and fixed or adjustable structure. Ask lenders for written offers and compare the same vehicle price, amount financed and loan length. The CFPB recommends arranging financing offers before visiting a dealer and shopping among lenders; banks, credit unions, dealers and other services may offer financing, but your actual rate depends on you and the loan. - Get offers before you shop at the dealership. Seek quotes from more than one lender so you have alternatives to evaluate.
- Match the terms. Compare the amount financed and loan term, along with APR, fees and any relevant product features. A lower monthly payment can result from stretching repayment over more time, not from a cheaper loan.
- Compare total borrowing cost. Look beyond the payment to the amount you will repay over the loan term, including fees and the effect of the term.
- Count the full cost of owning the car. Include the vehicle price, taxes and fees, down payment or trade-in, insurance, maintenance and optional add-ons—not just principal and interest. The CFPB offers a car-loan shopping guide and worksheet to help organize those costs. CFPB auto-loan resources.
A practical checklist for either loan
- Compare mortgage offers only with mortgage offers, and auto offers only with auto offers.
- Keep the loan amount and term consistent when evaluating offers.
- Check whether the rate is fixed or adjustable and account for fees, points and other charges.
- Use APR alongside the loan’s structure and total expected repayment; do not treat one number as the whole decision.
- Get offers in writing so you can verify that the quoted terms match.
