A certificate of deposit (CD) keeps its stated rate until maturity but may charge for early withdrawal. Stocks have no mechanical rate response: higher rates can support some earnings expectations while reducing the present value of future profits and increasing borrowing costs. Choose among them by matching the money’s time horizon, liquidity requirement, tax setting and tolerance for loss—not by chasing the asset with the highest current yield.
Compare the three choices at a glance
| Comparison point | Bank deposits and CDs | Bonds | Equity investments |
|---|---|---|---|
| How rates affect them | Savings APYs can reset; a CD normally keeps its stated rate through its term. | Prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall when market rates rise; newly issued bonds can offer higher yields. | The effect is indirect and uncertain through discount rates, financing costs, earnings expectations and sector valuations. |
| Principal risk | Eligible deposits have low principal risk within insurance limits; inflation can reduce purchasing power. | Market, duration, credit, liquidity and inflation risks apply. The issuer must still perform. | Highest volatility and a possibility of permanent loss. |
| Income | Interest is quoted as an annual percentage yield (APY), reflecting compounding; fees and penalties reduce the result. | Coupons provide scheduled interest; yield to maturity reflects price, coupons and the maturity date. | Dividends are discretionary and not guaranteed. |
| Access to money | Savings accounts are generally liquid. CDs can impose an early-withdrawal penalty. | Liquidity varies by issue and market. Selling before maturity can produce a gain or loss. | Listed shares are usually tradable, but their market prices can move sharply. |
| Best-fitting use | Emergency reserves and near-term spending needs. | Income and diversification when the bond’s maturity and credit risk fit the goal. | Long horizons in which you can tolerate substantial interim volatility. |
| Protection | FDIC insurance applies to eligible deposits within legal limits. | No FDIC insurance; a government guarantee, where applicable, does not guarantee the market price before maturity. | No FDIC insurance or guaranteed return. |
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes cash and cash equivalents as the safest of the three major asset categories, but also the category with the lowest return and inflation protection. Safety therefore solves a different problem from long-term growth.

Start with the goal before looking at a rate
A quoted rate is useful only after you know when the money is needed and whether you can accept a temporary or permanent loss. Write down these four constraints:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Time horizon: the date you expect to spend the money, not merely the date you hope to stop working.
- Liquidity: how quickly you may need the principal and whether a penalty or market sale is acceptable.
- Loss capacity: whether a decline would force you to sell or abandon the goal.
- Tax and account type: the same pretax yield can produce different after-tax results in a taxable account, retirement account or other tax-advantaged arrangement.
Use the shortest, safest holding that can meet a near-term obligation. Reserve higher-volatility assets for money that can remain invested through adverse markets. There is no universal stock percentage: the appropriate exposure depends on the horizon, the rest of your assets and your ability to keep contributing and holding during a decline.

Bank deposits and CDs
Savings accounts: liquid, but the APY can change
A savings account normally lets you withdraw without selling an investment. Its APY is not a promise that lasts for a particular number of years: the bank can change the rate as market conditions and its pricing change. When policy or market rates rise, a competitive savings APY may rise; when rates fall, it may fall. Check the account’s current APY, compounding method, minimum-balance rules, monthly fees and withdrawal restrictions.
CDs: a stated rate in exchange for a stated term
A CD is a bank deposit for a fixed amount and fixed period. In exchange for leaving the money on deposit, you receive the stated rate under the account’s terms. Taking the money out before maturity can trigger an early-withdrawal penalty, so do not put emergency cash into a CD unless the terms provide access you can actually use.
The fixed rate creates a trade-off when rates move. If market rates rise after you open the CD, your locked rate may be below the rate available on a new CD. If rates fall, your locked rate can remain attractive until maturity. At maturity, you can normally take the proceeds, renew, or choose another deposit; review the renewal instructions and deadline rather than allowing an unwanted automatic renewal.

FDIC coverage and its limits
FDIC insurance generally covers eligible deposits up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. The limit applies to the combined eligible deposits in that ownership category at that bank, not to each individual account number. Insurance protects against an insured-bank failure; it does not protect purchasing power from inflation, and it does not cover stocks, bonds or losses caused by selling an investment at a market price.
Deposit-rate changes and advance notice
Federal Reserve Regulation DD guidance generally requires 30 calendar days’ advance notice when a change to a deposit term may reduce the APY or otherwise adversely affect the consumer. Read the notice and the account agreement: a notice requirement does not turn a variable savings APY into a fixed rate, and it does not remove a CD’s early-withdrawal terms.
How to compare deposit offers
- Record the APY, not just the nominal interest rate, and confirm the compounding frequency.
- Calculate the balance requirement needed to earn that APY and subtract recurring account fees.
- For a CD, write down the term, maturity date, renewal policy and exact early-withdrawal penalty.
- Verify that the institution is FDIC-insured and that your total balance stays within the applicable coverage limits and ownership rules.
- Keep enough immediately accessible cash outside any CD whose penalty or transfer delay would interfere with an emergency.
Bonds: separate the coupon, yield and market price
Coupon income is not the same as your return
A bond’s coupon is the interest payment set by its terms. Yield to maturity also reflects the price you pay, the coupons, the time until maturity and the assumption that the issuer makes the required payments. A bond bought above or below its face value can therefore have a yield different from its coupon rate.

Why prices move opposite to market rates
The SEC summarizes the relationship this way: “The price of a bond moves in the opposite direction than market interest rates—like opposing ends of a seesaw.” Suppose a bond with a 3% coupon and a $1,000 price is already outstanding. In the SEC’s 2013 illustration, if comparable market rates fall to 2%, that bond’s price rises to $1,082; if market rates rise to 4%, its price falls to $925. The fixed payments did not change; the price changed so the bond’s total yield could compete with newly available bonds.

|---|---|---|
| Rates fall to 2% | Price rises from $1,000 to $1,082 | The bond’s 3% payments are more attractive than new 2% issues. |
| Rates rise to 4% | Price falls from $1,000 to $925 | The price must fall so the fixed payments offer a competitive yield. |
Duration, maturity and coupon determine sensitivity
Longer-maturity fixed-rate bonds generally move more when rates change because more future payments are exposed to the new-rate environment. Lower-coupon bonds also tend to be more rate-sensitive than otherwise similar higher-coupon bonds. The SEC notes that a bond’s maturity and coupon rate generally affect how much its price changes when market rates change. A shorter maturity can reduce, but not eliminate, this sensitivity.
Risks that remain if you hold to maturity
Holding an individual bond to maturity can reduce the need to sell at an interim market price, but it does not eliminate issuer default risk, inflation risk or the opportunity cost of being locked into an unattractive rate. If the issuer fails to pay, the promised maturity value may not arrive. If inflation rises, the returned dollars may buy less than expected. Selling before maturity exposes you to the current market price, which can be above or below what you paid.

Credit quality, liquidity and the bond’s maturity should be compared with the date you need the money. A higher yield can compensate for greater credit or liquidity risk rather than represent a free improvement.
Equity investments: growth potential with an uncertain rate response
Why stocks can help long-term goals
Stocks represent ownership in businesses. Their greater growth potential comes with more volatile returns than bonds and cash, and a stock can suffer a permanent loss. Dividends are optional distributions, not contractual interest payments. For a long horizon, broad diversification across companies and sectors reduces the damage a single business can cause, but it cannot remove market risk.
How interest rates reach stock valuations
Higher rates can help some companies by signaling stronger economic demand, yet they also raise the discount rate applied to future profits and increase the cost of borrowing. Businesses whose valuations depend heavily on distant growth can be especially sensitive to that discount-rate change, while banks, commodity producers, exporters and other sectors can respond differently. Because earnings, expectations and sector weights vary, never assume that a rate increase will make every stock rise or fall.

Time horizon is the risk control
Money needed soon should not depend on a favorable stock-market exit date. For a long-term objective, determine how much volatility you can endure without selling, diversify rather than concentrate in a theme, and use a written rebalancing rule. The right equity exposure is the amount you can hold through a severe decline while still meeting nearer-term obligations from safer reserves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do in three rate environments
| Environment | Deposits and CDs | Existing bonds | Equities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rates rising | Savings APYs may reset upward. New CDs can offer higher rates, while an existing CD remains locked until maturity. | Existing fixed-rate prices generally decline; newly issued bonds may provide higher yields. Longer duration usually means larger price moves. | Higher discount rates and financing costs can pressure valuations, but earnings expectations and sector exposure can offset or reverse the effect. |
| Rates falling | Variable savings APYs may decline. Existing CDs keep their stated rate through the term. | Existing fixed-rate prices generally rise as their coupons become more valuable relative to new issues. | Lower discount rates can support valuations, but business results and expectations still control outcomes. |
| Rates remain high | Liquid savings may remain useful for reserves; a CD can lock a known rate but sacrifices flexibility. | Income may be higher on new issues, while price and credit risk remain. Match maturity to the spending date. | Borrowing costs and valuation pressure may persist; diversification and a long horizon matter more than a single rate forecast. |
A repeatable way to choose an allocation
- Map cash needs by date. Separate emergency money, bills due within the next few years and long-term goals. Do not fund a fixed near-term obligation with an asset whose sale price is unpredictable.
- Set a liquidity floor. Keep the amount that must be available immediately in an appropriate savings account or other permitted cash reserve. Treat a CD penalty as a real cost, not a footnote.
- Match bond maturity and duration. For money needed on a known date, compare the bond’s maturity, duration, credit quality and liquidity with that date. A high coupon does not compensate for a maturity mismatch or unacceptable default risk.
- Compare after-tax results. Put the APY, bond yield and expected equity distributions on the same after-tax basis for the account you will actually use. Interest, dividends and gains can receive different treatment, and rules change; check current rules for your jurisdiction and account.
- Choose equity exposure from behavior, not a forecast. Estimate the largest decline you could tolerate while continuing the plan. Use diversified holdings and keep enough safer assets that a downturn would not force a sale.
- Stress-test rate paths. Ask what happens if rates rise quickly, fall before renewal, or stay high for years. Recheck the plan’s cash flows rather than trying to predict the next central-bank move.
- Review at defined intervals. Reassess when a goal’s date, income, tax situation or risk capacity changes. Do not trade solely because a financial headline changed.
Examples of matching the instrument to the job
Emergency reserve
The defining requirement is immediate access and stable principal. A liquid savings account is usually more suitable than a CD with a penalty, a bond that could be below its purchase price when sold, or an equity position that could be down during a crisis. Compare the savings APY and fees, then verify FDIC coverage for the total balance.
Money needed on a known date
For a tuition payment, home closing or other dated obligation, start with the amount and date, then choose deposits or bonds whose access and maturity fit that schedule. A CD can provide a known rate if you can leave the money untouched; a bond can provide income but still carries credit and market risks. Do not assume that holding a bond to maturity removes the possibility that the issuer fails to pay.

Retirement decades away
A long horizon gives diversified equities time to pursue growth, but it does not make volatility harmless. Keep near-term spending needs in assets that will not require a forced stock sale, and select the equity share you can maintain through major declines. Bonds and deposits can provide diversification and planned liquidity; their role should change as the spending date approaches.
Taxes and account type can change the ranking
Compare what you keep, not only what an advertisement quotes. Deposit interest and bond coupons are generally income items, while stock dividends and gains may follow different rules; the treatment can also differ between taxable and tax-advantaged accounts. A tax-deferred account may postpone tax, while a tax-free arrangement may have its own eligibility and withdrawal conditions. Because rates and rules vary by jurisdiction, account and date, obtain current guidance before making a tax-based choice. Never let a tax benefit justify a maturity, credit or liquidity risk that does not fit the goal.
Common mistakes and the correction
- Chasing the highest headline APY: check compounding, fees, minimums, insurance status and how long the rate is guaranteed.
- Putting emergency cash in a CD: compare the penalty and access delay with the probability you will need the money.
- Confusing a bond coupon with a guaranteed return: include the purchase price, yield to maturity, credit quality and sale date.
- Assuming “hold to maturity” removes every risk: issuer default and inflation can still reduce the result.
- Making a one-way rate bet with stocks: examine valuation, sector mix, earnings and your holding period instead of predicting a uniform market response.
- Ignoring insurance aggregation: add eligible deposits by bank and ownership category before deciding that every dollar is covered.
- Comparing pretax numbers across account types: calculate the after-tax amount available for the actual goal.
- Using a single allocation forever: update the mix when the goal date, liquidity need or ability to tolerate loss changes.
The practical conclusion is straightforward: use insured, liquid deposits for money that must be stable and available; use CDs when a fixed term and penalty are acceptable; use bonds when their duration, credit quality and maturity fit the cash-flow need; and use diversified equities for long-term growth you can leave invested through volatility. Interest-rate changes alter the trade-offs, but they do not replace the need to match each asset to the job your money must perform.
