How much the Family increase adds up to
The $4 increase is about 17.4% over the former $22.99 monthly rate. At the current reported rate, 12 monthly payments total $323.88, compared with $275.88 at the former price—a $48 difference over a full year. If all six eligible household members use the plan, the simple per-person cost is about $4.50 per month, versus about $3.83 at the old rate. These are arithmetic comparisons before taxes or billing surcharges, and assume six active members and 12 full-price monthly payments.

When the increase took effect
Price-change reports appeared April 10, 2026. New subscribers were reportedly charged the new prices immediately. Existing subscribers were notified that the change would apply on their June 2026 billing date, according to 9to5Google and the Los Angeles Times. That was a transition tied to subscribers’ billing cycles, not one universal charge date.
If you still see $22.99, you may be viewing an older price listing, be within a billing or promotional transition, or have account-specific pricing or a different billing arrangement. Check the renewal amount shown on your own membership rather than assuming a search result or another subscriber’s charge applies to you.

What the Family plan includes—and who can join
YouTube Premium Family covers the plan manager and up to five additional members, for six people total. Members use separate Google accounts, and YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium access. YouTube describes the available membership types and benefits on its plan information page.
It is a household plan, not a general-purpose way to share a subscription with friends in different homes. YouTube’s Family-plan guidance says members must live at the same residential address as the family manager. The service may use an electronic check-in about every 30 days to confirm the household requirement. A country or region mismatch in a Google Pay profile can also prevent someone from joining, and a person can switch Google family groups only once every 12 months.

How to check your price and billing date
- Sign in to the Google account that manages the Family membership.
- In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then choose Purchases and memberships.
- Open the YouTube Premium membership and review its displayed price, next billing date, and payment method.
- If those labels differ on your device, use YouTube’s paid-membership or Google Account subscription-management page and inspect the final amount shown for your account.
Compare the actual checkout amount if you are considering switching between YouTube’s website, an app store, or another billing provider. Reports have noted that billing channel can affect the price, but the amount is account- and channel-dependent; PiunikaWeb discusses the reported differences. Do not rely on a universal app-store price.
Is Family still worth paying for?
The useful comparison is the cost per household member who will actually use the benefits. At $26.99 a month, two users would represent about $13.50 each; three users, about $9.00 each; six users, about $4.50 each. These are simple divisions of the reported monthly price, before taxes or billing surcharges.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- One user: Compare the Individual plan or, if offered to your account, its prepaid annual option.
- Two users: Check whether YouTube offers a Two-person plan in your market and account; availability is not universal.
- Three to six household users: Family may provide a lower effective cost per person, especially if several people use both YouTube video and YouTube Music benefits.
- People at different addresses: Family is not designed for this arrangement under YouTube’s same-household rule.
Family is more compelling when several people regularly watch YouTube and value its Premium benefits, such as an ad-free experience, background play, or offline downloads. It is less compelling when only one person watches, the household mainly wants music, or members rarely use the service.
Cheaper or different options
YouTube lists Individual, prepaid annual, Family, Two-person, Student, and Premium Lite options, but eligibility and availability depend on market and account. Review YouTube’s official plan information and confirm what appears at signup.

- Premium Lite: Reported at $8.99 per month in the U.S. It is a lower-cost, individual tier with fewer benefits, so verify its current features before treating it as a substitute. It does not replace a Family plan or full Premium benefits such as YouTube Music access.
- Two-person: YouTube lists this option for two people in the same household in some markets. Confirm that it is available to your account before planning around it.
- Spotify Premium Family: For households primarily seeking music, Spotify’s U.S. Family page lists a $21.99 monthly price signal and up to six accounts for family members at the same address. It is a music subscription, not a replacement for YouTube’s video benefits. Check the Spotify Family offer for current terms.
What cancellation means
YouTube says cancellation normally leaves paid access active for the manager and Family members until the end of the current billing cycle; afterward, paid benefits end while the Google Accounts remain. Check the timing and terms in YouTube’s Family-plan management information.
Before canceling, save or note the price and renewal date currently shown on your account. Rejoining later may mean paying the then-current price rather than recovering an older or transitional rate. Confirm the rejoin price before completing a cancellation; do not assume a retention discount will be offered.
