Adobe Summit canceled its Las Vegas gathering and moved online
Adobe announced on March 2, 2020, that it would not hold the live Adobe Summit in Las Vegas. The event, held alongside Magento Imagine, had been scheduled for March 29–April 2. Adobe said health and safety concerns related to COVID-19 drove the decision. Its announcement is available in Adobe’s March 2 update.

The replacement took shape in stages. Adobe initially planned an online production, then dropped the live studio component as conditions worsened and shelter-in-place restrictions made that approach unsafe. Instead, speakers recorded keynotes and sessions remotely. Adobe’s account of the change says the company had expected more than 23,000 people at the physical event; that was an estimate, not an attendance count. The digital program included more than 140 videos, according to Adobe’s production account.

The digital experience began March 31. Adobe described it as free and on demand, with executive keynotes, product and platform announcements, customer examples, breakout sessions, and Adobe Sneaks. The content covered data, insights, content, commerce, and customer-journey management, and was offered in English and several other languages. Google Cloud Next ’20 replaced Moscone Center with a digital-first event
Google canceled the physical Cloud Next ’20 conference planned for San Francisco’s Moscone Center on April 6–8, 2020, and changed the event to a digital-first, multi-day online experience. Contemporary coverage reported the format change and original dates in Nextgov’s March 2020 account.
That meant Cloud Next was not simply canceled as a program: online access preserved a way to share sessions and announcements without bringing attendees together at the venue. The available contemporary account describes the digital-first format but does not establish a specific session count or access policy, so those details should not be assumed.

What the online format preserved—and what it could not
Digital delivery kept presentations and product information available without a physical gathering. It also made content accessible beyond the people able to travel to Las Vegas or San Francisco. Adobe’s production account describes a substantial redesign rather than a simple live stream, including remote recordings and on-demand video.
A virtual program could not automatically reproduce the convention-floor experience: face-to-face networking, partner booths, informal meetings, live demonstrations, and side events. Those were meaningful differences for attendees and sponsors, even when keynotes and sessions remained available online. The change therefore preserved much of the formal content, not every commercial or social function of an in-person conference.

Why the decisions came so quickly
Organizers were responding to a fast-changing public-health situation in early March, when companies were restricting business travel and large gatherings were becoming harder to organize. Adobe said it had monitored COVID-19 and concluded it could not safely host a crowd of the expected size. The decisions should be understood as health-and-safety actions by the organizers, not as evidence that one specific government order caused both cancellations.
The timing also helps explain the scale of the format changes. Adobe announced its live-event cancellation on March 2, before the World Health Organization characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic on March 11. Across the technology industry, other conferences were also canceled, postponed, or moved online; contemporary reporting documented the broader disruption in the Los Angeles Times’ March 2 roundup and its March 12 update.

A digital-event pivot by companies built around digital tools
The shift had particular resonance because both companies sell technology used to deliver digital services and content. Google’s March coverage discussed how cloud tools and videoconferencing supported the rapid move toward remote work, while Adobe’s Summit production relied on its own products for creating, delivering, and measuring the online experience. Google described that wider context in its March 2020 cloud update; Adobe detailed its event production in its behind-the-scenes account.

Adobe Summit EMEA was a separate event: Adobe announced that it and Magento Live EMEA would be postponed, not treated as the same online replacement, in a separate regional update. The available sources do not establish a universal refund policy across attendee, sponsor, and exhibitor categories, so ticket or travel arrangements should not be inferred from the format announcements.
