Short answer: Xiaomi has reportedly moved humanoid robots from demonstrations into trial operations at an automobile factory and says it wants large numbers of embodied robots working in its factories within five years. That is a meaningful factory-automation strategy, but it is not proof that robots will independently run Xiaomi’s factories by 2031.
The evidence so far supports a more limited interpretation: Xiaomi is testing humanoids for specific production tasks, while conventional robots and human workers continue to handle much of the manufacturing process. For investors and business readers, the important questions are reliability, cost, supervision, and scale—not simply whether the machines have a human-like shape.

- Current fact: Xiaomi has reportedly started factory trials.
- Near-term objective: The company is developing hardware, software, and workflows for more useful industrial deployment.
- Five-year forecast: Xiaomi says large numbers of robots could work across its factories.
The announcement does not establish a firm mass-production date, a specific number of robots, or a plan to replace all factory labor. “Large-scale deployment” has not been publicly defined in terms of factories, workstations, production volume, or human supervision.
From CyberOne to factory trials
Xiaomi entered public humanoid robotics with CyberOne, introduced in 2022. The company had also developed quadruped robots, including CyberDog and CyberDog 2. Later activity increasingly connected robotics with industrial and embodied-AI applications around Xiaomi’s vehicle and smart-manufacturing operations. Background on Xiaomi’s robotics work is described by the Beijing E-Town and China National Center for Science and Technology.
CyberOne should not automatically be treated as the exact production robot now being trialed. Xiaomi has not publicly disclosed enough information to establish whether CyberOne was directly adapted, whether a separate factory-oriented platform is being used, or what the production robot’s payload, battery life, tooling, and safety specifications are.
That is a crucial difference between a public demonstration platform and an industrial system. A factory robot must be designed around repeatable cycle times, maintenance, safe operation near people, integration with production software, and predictable performance over long shifts.
What “embodied intelligence” means
In Xiaomi’s terminology, embodied intelligence refers to AI that perceives and acts through a physical body. A useful factory system may combine:
- Cameras and other sensors
- Motion planning and actuator control
- Force and tactile feedback
- Manipulation software and task-specific tools
- Collision avoidance and emergency systems
- Factory scheduling and manufacturing-execution software
- Models that translate instructions into physical actions
Xiaomi’s research releases point to this software direction. Xiaomi-Robotics-0 was described as an open-source vision-language-action model, while Xiaomi-Robotics-1 describes later work using more than 100,000 hours of real-world trajectories.

What humanoids are likely to do first
The most credible early applications are narrow tasks that are repetitive, physically tiring, measurable, and performed in facilities designed around human workers. Possible roles include:
- Picking and placing components
- Fastening and tightening
- Moving bins and small parts
- Visual inspection
- Loading and unloading workstations
- Material replenishment
- Component sorting
- Simple assembly operations
- Moving parts between stations
A reported Xiaomi trial involved a self-tapping-nut workstation. According to a company earnings-call transcript, the system achieved a reported simultaneous-installation success rate of 90.2%, with production-line cycle times as short as 76 seconds and three hours of automatic operation. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited benchmarks; they should not be read as proof that the robot can run continuously at that performance across a full production network.
A 90.2% task success rate could still be inadequate for unsupervised production if every failed attempt requires a technician to stop the line. The more useful measures are successful cycles per hour, interventions per shift, recovery time, downtime, scrap, rework, safety incidents, and total cost per completed operation.
Why Xiaomi might choose humanoids
The business case for humanoids is mainly flexibility. Existing factories are built around human reach, human-height workstations, walking paths, storage systems, and tools. A robot with a human-like body could potentially work in those spaces without requiring every station to be redesigned.

Equipped with 16 high-voltage intelligent bus servos, TonyPi offers rapid response times and stable output, enabling precise multi-joint coordination and complex motion control. This ensures accurate humanoid postures and interactive movements to meet various demands.
But human-like form is not automatically an advantage. A fixed robotic arm, gantry, conveyor, machine-vision system, or specialized machine may be faster, cheaper, and more reliable for a stable repetitive operation. “General-purpose” does not mean “best-purpose.” Xiaomi is more likely to use humanoids alongside conventional automation than to replace every existing machine with one.
The difficult part is production reliability
Uptime and intervention
A demonstration can succeed for minutes. A factory operates for thousands of hours each year. Buyers need evidence that a robot can work for weeks and months while dealing with dust, glare, vibration, material changes, worn tools, and occasional mistakes.
Important measures include mean time between failures, human interventions per shift, mean time to recovery, maintenance intervals, and uptime across multiple shifts. Without those figures, a trial establishes technical possibility but not commercial readiness.
Dexterity and force control
Many assembly jobs require precise alignment, controlled force, flexible fingers, and tactile sensing. Reflective, deformable, or slightly misaligned parts can be much harder to handle than objects arranged for a staged demonstration. The gap between walking convincingly and manipulating parts reliably remains significant.
Safety
Humanoids may work near people while carrying heavy or sharp components. A production deployment needs task-specific risk assessments, collision avoidance, force and speed limits, emergency stops, safe restart procedures, and clear rules for human-robot interaction. The available evidence does not establish that Xiaomi’s factory robots have completed all relevant safety certifications for commercial deployment.
Battery life and maintenance
A robot must operate for long shifts or exchange batteries quickly. Battery weight affects payload and stability, while charging infrastructure can consume floor space and complicate scheduling. Factories also need answers about actuator replacement, calibration, software updates, spare parts, remote support, and fleet management.

Integration
Humanoids will not operate in isolation. They must connect to manufacturing-execution systems, warehouse-management systems, quality-control platforms, safety PLCs, industrial networks, scheduling tools, and potentially digital twins. The software and service layer may become as important as the robot hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe economics investors should watch
The relevant comparison is not simply a robot’s purchase price against a worker’s annual wages. A realistic calculation includes:
- Hardware and installation
- Training and task programming
- End effectors and tooling
- Software and fleet-management fees
- Maintenance, batteries, and power
- Safety validation and insurance
- Human supervision and technical support
- Downtime, scrap, and rework
- Any factory redesign or charging infrastructure
A humanoid becomes commercially compelling only if it delivers a competitive cost per successful production operation while maintaining quality and safety. If one technician must constantly supervise a small fleet, the expected labor savings may be substantially reduced.
For Xiaomi, internal deployment could still make strategic sense even before robots are cheaper than every alternative. Factory use can generate operational data, expose failure modes, improve the company’s AI models, and help it determine which tasks justify humanoid hardware. But that strategic value is different from immediate profitability or a public robot-sales business.

However, a large supplier base and high shipment numbers do not prove reliable autonomy, buyer demand, profitable unit economics, or adequate after-sales service. Manufacturing capacity can accelerate development, but it cannot by itself solve the hardest software, safety, and operating problems.
How Xiaomi compares with competitors
Xiaomi is part of a broader factory-first race:
- Tesla: Tesla has discussed using Optimus in its own factories. Its scale could provide a large internal testing environment, but public timelines and demonstrations remain company claims until supported by sustained production data. The broader market context is covered by the Associated Press.
- Figure: Figure has pursued automotive manufacturing applications, an attractive test environment because vehicle production provides structured, repeatable tasks and measurable output. See the discussion in this Mitsui report.
- UBTECH: UBTECH’s Walker line and related work focus on logistics, manufacturing, and commercial deployment.
- Unitree and AGIBOT: These companies are significant in China’s competitive landscape, particularly for lower-cost hardware and rapid iteration. Shipments, however, should not be confused with profitable industrial operation.
- 1X: 1X provides an adjacent production benchmark. Its NEO Factory page describes planned 2026 shipments, capacity of up to 10,000 units annually, and an intended expansion toward more than 100,000 units annually by the end of 2027. That does not show that Xiaomi has equivalent capacity or plans.
What “within five years” could mean
Xiaomi’s target can be evaluated through three practical scenarios. These are analytical possibilities, not forecasts from Xiaomi.
| Scenario | What it would look like | What must improve |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative | Pilots remain limited to selected workstations and require regular human intervention. | Reliability, recovery procedures, and safety validation |
| Middle case | Dozens or hundreds of robots handle selected tasks across vehicle and electronics plants. | Cost per operation, fleet support, uptime, and task transfer |
| Aggressive | Humanoid fleets perform material handling, inspection, and multiple assembly tasks across much of Xiaomi’s production network. | Large-scale manufacturing, dependable autonomy, software generalization, and strong economics |
The strongest test of the prediction is not whether Xiaomi can demonstrate another task. It is whether the company can show sustained production use, publish intervention and quality data, expand beyond one workstation, and define “large scale” with actual numbers.
What this means for workers and investors
Near-term factory automation is more likely to change jobs than eliminate all factory employment. Demand could decline for some repetitive tasks while increasing for robot technicians, maintenance specialists, safety engineers, process engineers, AI and data specialists, and fleet supervisors.
For investors, the key issue is whether robotics strengthens Xiaomi’s manufacturing efficiency and technology differentiation without creating excessive capital, maintenance, and execution costs. A successful internal program could improve production flexibility and generate valuable training data. An unsuccessful one could remain an expensive demonstration layer that adds complexity to factories.
It is also important not to assume Xiaomi will sell these factory robots to outside customers. The available evidence supports internal factory deployment, not a confirmed public product launch, price, leasing program, or commercial purchase channel.
Verdict
Xiaomi’s humanoid-robot announcement is more substantial than a concept reveal because factory trials have reportedly begun. The company has a credible reason to test humanoids internally: its vehicle and electronics factories offer structured environments where performance can be measured and improved.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Still, “robots will soon run Xiaomi’s smart factories” overstates what has been demonstrated. The evidence currently supports task-level automation under controlled conditions, not fully autonomous factories. By roughly 2031, Xiaomi could plausibly have humanoids performing selected production, inspection, and material-handling jobs at meaningful scale. Whether that becomes a profitable manufacturing advantage will depend on sustained uptime, low intervention rates, safety, maintenance, and cost per successful operation.
