DeepL Translator: Did Character Limits Fall and Prices Rise in 2026?

DeepL’s 2026 changes affect plan structure and API availability, but they do not prove a blanket character-limit cut or price increase. Here’s how to identify your limit and compare costs accurately.

Short answer: DeepL has changed its plan structure, but the evidence does not establish one blanket character-limit reduction and price increase affecting every user. The result depends on whether you use the free Translator, a paid Translator subscription, the API, or another DeepL product—and whether your account is new or legacy.

For personal budgeting, the most important distinction is this: a character limit may be a per-request cap, a monthly quota, a document restriction, an API-key limit, or a spending control. Upgrading to a paid Translator plan will not automatically give you API access.

The confirmed changes

DeepL now separates its products into Translator, Voice, Write, API, and Enterprise offerings. The paid Translator product is intended for people using DeepL’s website or apps. The API is a separate product for software integrations, automated workflows, and batch processing.

For new customers, the former API Free and API Pro plans are no longer available for purchase. DeepL’s current API structure includes Developer, Growth, and Enterprise, while some existing customers may remain on legacy arrangements.

  • INSTANT LANGUAGE TRANSLATOR DEVICE FOR CONVERSATIONS: This voice translator device two way instantly translates speech and text between multiple languages in real-time (try online translation for a faster and better experience), supporting 160 languages online and 15 languages offline. • RECHARGABLE BATTERY: With its built-in rechargeable battery, you can use this word translator on-the-go without worrying about power.

That is a genuine plan-architecture change. It is not, by itself, proof that every DeepL user received a price increase or a lower text limit.

DeepL limits at a glance

Product or arrangement What the documented limit means
Free Translator Commonly documented as a 1,500-character maximum per text request, but users should verify the live interface because limits may vary by product, account, language, or rollout. This is not a monthly quota.
Paid Translator For manual website and app translation. It is separate from the API and subject to applicable reasonable-use provisions.
API Developer Up to 1 million characters in total. The allowance does not reset monthly.
API Growth, monthly billing 1 million included characters per month, followed by usage-based charges; documented monthly maximum of 50 million characters.
API Growth, annual billing 12 million included characters per year, with the applicable overage and billing terms.
API Free, where still applicable 500,000 characters per month.
Legacy API Pro No included free-character allowance; monthly base fee plus usage-based character billing.

What “character limit” actually means

Several different restrictions can look like a character-limit cut:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Per-request limit: the amount of text accepted in one pasted translation request.
  • Monthly quota: the number of characters available during a billing period.
  • Per-document limit: the maximum file size or source-character count for one uploaded file.
  • API-key limit: a cap assigned to one key rather than the entire account.
  • Spending ceiling: an account-level control that stops API processing after a cost threshold.
  • Rate limit: a temporary restriction on request frequency, which can produce an HTTP 429 response.

These are not interchangeable. A 1,500-character text-box limit does not mean the account has only 1,500 characters per month. Likewise, an API plan’s included allowance is different from its maximum permitted usage.

How DeepL counts API characters

DeepL’s API counts source characters, not translated-output characters. Spaces, tabs, and line breaks count. A Unicode code point counts as one character; for example, é counts as one character even when its UTF-8 representation uses multiple bytes.

This matters when estimating a budget. A document that appears to contain 900,000 visible letters may exceed that estimate after spaces, formatting-related line breaks, and other source text are included. Check the API usage and limits endpoint rather than relying on a word processor’s word count.

Did DeepL reduce the free Translator limit?

The commonly reported free Translator limit is 1,500 characters per request, according to secondary documentation including Wikipedia’s DeepL Translator entry. The available official material does not establish a single dated reduction that applies to every free user and interface.

Before concluding that a limit was cut, check whether you changed:

  • from the web Translator to an app or embedded interface;
  • from pasted text to document translation;
  • from a free account to an API workflow;
  • language, account, or regional settings; or
  • the size or format of the request.

The live DeepL interface is the best place to verify the current per-request behavior for your account.

Did DeepL increase prices?

A universal price increase is not established by the available official sources. DeepL has changed its lineup and billing models, but a plan migration should not automatically be described as a like-for-like price rise.

For a reliable comparison, record all of the following:

  1. the old and new plan names;
  2. the region and billing currency;
  3. the effective date;
  4. monthly versus annual billing;
  5. whether taxes are included;
  6. whether the amount is promotional or standard; and
  7. whether the change applies to new customers, renewals, or legacy accounts.

DeepL says its pricing page reflects the current offering, while some older plans may remain available only to existing customers. Check the current Translator pricing page, your account’s renewal notice, and your invoice. Prices shown in an app store may also differ from web pricing. For example, the US App Store listing has shown multiple monthly and annual purchase amounts without mapping every amount in the listing excerpt to a named plan; treat those figures as purchase signals, not a definitive plan comparison.

See DeepL’s information on billing periods and its license terms before changing a recurring subscription.

API costs and allowances

The current API models affect budgeting differently:

  • Developer: the 1-million-character allowance is total, not a monthly reset. It may suit a limited project or evaluation, but it should not be budgeted as 1 million fresh characters every month.
  • Growth: includes 1 million characters per month on monthly billing or 12 million per year on annual billing, with additional usage charged separately. The documented monthly maximum is 50 million characters.
  • Legacy API Free: where available, provides 500,000 characters per month.
  • Legacy API Pro: combines a monthly base fee with usage-based character charges.

Exact prices depend on the live regional offer, currency, tax treatment, billing cadence, and account status. Do not use an API allowance as a substitute for a consumer Translator subscription when you only need occasional manual translations.

What happens when you hit a quota or spending limit?

DeepL provides both subscription-level cost controls and API-key usage limits. The subscription-level control can stop API processing after the account reaches its spending ceiling for the billing period. A key-level limit can restrict the characters or speech-to-text minutes consumed by one API key.

Both controls may be active. Processing stops when the lower applicable limit is reached. Changes to a key-level limit apply immediately. DeepL documents these controls in API usage and cost control.

A rejected request therefore does not necessarily mean DeepL reduced your plan’s character limit. Check quota exhaustion, the key cap, the spending ceiling, document restrictions, and rate limiting before upgrading.

Document limits are separate

For the documented API Pro-side limits, DeepL lists maximum file sizes and source-character counts by format:

Format Maximum file size Maximum characters
DOC/DOCX 30 MB 1 million
PPTX 30 MB 1 million
XLSX 30 MB 1 million
PDF 30 MB 1 million
TXT 1 MB 1 million
HTML 5 MB 1 million
XLIFF 10 MB 1 million
SRT 150 KB 1 million
JPEG/PNG image translation 3 MB 1 million

Document translation may also involve a 50,000-character minimum charge per document under applicable API terms. That is an API and terms detail—not a universal rule for every web or app user. See DeepL’s API usage limits and the API license terms.

How to identify your plan and avoid an unnecessary upgrade

  1. Sign in to your DeepL account.
  2. Open Plans, Subscription, or Billing, using the label shown in your account.
  3. Write down the exact product: Translator, API, Write, Voice, or Enterprise.
  4. Record the billing period, currency, renewal date, and displayed allowance.
  5. Review current-period usage and remaining quota.
  6. If you use the API, open API Keys & Limits.
  7. Check both the account-level spending ceiling and the individual API-key character limit.
  8. Compare your invoice or renewal notice with the current regional pricing page.

This process distinguishes a genuine billing change from a request-size restriction or a safety cap. It also prevents a common mistake: buying Translator Pro when the actual requirement is API access.

If a translation no longer fits

  1. Split text at sensible boundaries. Use paragraphs, sections, or sentence groups rather than cutting through words or tables.
  2. Use document translation when appropriate. Uploading a supported file can preserve more structure than pasting a whole document into a text box.
  3. For API workflows, batch requests carefully. Track source-character usage and respect rate limits. Retry temporary 429 responses with backoff rather than sending repeated immediate requests.
  4. Check the glossary and context impact. Splitting text can reduce context and may require consistent glossary handling.
  5. Set a spending ceiling before testing. This is particularly important when an application can retry requests or process many files automatically.
  6. Monitor usage programmatically. Use the supported usage endpoint and keep an internal counter based on source characters.

Is a paid DeepL plan worth it?

The right choice depends on the workflow, not simply on the size of the character limit.

  • Choose Translator if you translate manually in the website or apps and do not need software integration.
  • Choose API if your application, website, localization platform, or batch process must send translations automatically.
  • Consider Enterprise if procurement, administration, security requirements, support, or custom commitments matter more than a standard self-serve plan.
  • Compare cloud alternatives such as Google Cloud Translation, Microsoft Azure AI Translator, and Amazon Translate when your organization already uses those ecosystems.

For a personal budget, estimate your actual monthly source-character volume, include spaces and line breaks, and model occasional overage. Also consider privacy and data-handling requirements, document formats, glossary or CAT-tool integration, and whether you need speech or writing features. A cheaper headline price can be poor value if it does not solve the underlying workflow.

Bottom line

As of September 15, 2026, the defensible conclusion is that DeepL’s plan architecture and API availability have changed, but a universal reduction in Translator character limits and a universal price increase have not been established. Identify the exact product and type of limit first. Then compare the same plan, region, currency, billing period, and customer status before deciding whether to renew, upgrade, or switch.
