Halo: Campaign Evolved, a Microsoft-associated game, placed No. 6 in US/Canada and No. 7 in EU on Sony’s July 2026 PS5 download chart. That is a genuine placement, but it does not show that Microsoft’s cross-platform strategy has paid off. The chart ranks PlayStation Store downloads, not preorders, and it publishes no sales, revenue, or profit figures. The preorder numbers circulating in 2026 are either attributed claims or affiliate-link data, and neither gives the comparison the headline implies.
What Sony’s July 2026 chart measures
Sony published the July 2026 PlayStation Store ranking in a post dated August 10, 2026. It covers purchases made through the Store and excludes upgrades and games bundled with hardware. The chart is split into separate PS5, PS4, PS VR2, and free-to-play sections, and each section has its own US/Canada and EU list.

Those positions are ordinal ranks within one month and two regions. They are the only figures the chart supplies for this game.
What the chart does not tell you
- Units sold. A rank of No. 6 does not reveal how many copies were downloaded.
- Revenue or profit. The chart does not show price, discounts, platform fees, or the share of each sale that a publisher keeps.
- Cause. A position on the list does not explain why a title landed there.
- Trend. One month’s ranking says nothing about whether a game sustains demand after launch.
- Preorders. Downloads are completed purchases of games available to download; they are not preorder counts.
Sony’s listing for Halo: Campaign Evolved
Sony’s PS5 games page lists Halo: Campaign Evolved among PS5 titles and in its upcoming and preorder area. The listing as retrieved gives no release date. It confirms that the game is listed for PS5. It does not confirm a release date, whether a physical disc is available, or how much stock exists in any retail channel.

The preorder claims, and why they conflict
IGN’s reported 8-to-1 ratio
Windows Central reported in 2026 that IGN had claimed an 8-to-1 PS5-to-Xbox preorder ratio for a Microsoft title, and that the figure came from affiliate-link data rather than preorder records. An Xbox spokesperson rejected that reading:
“This doesn’t represent pre-order data. We’ve had record orders. People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links.”

The spokesperson’s objection is the more precise one. Affiliate-link activity measures where readers click, which can reflect shopping interest, the choice of a particular retailer, or the audience a site happens to reach. It does not measure completed orders on either platform. The reporting also does not establish the underlying comparative totals, so the 8-to-1 figure cannot be checked from the public record.
Matthew Ball’s GTA VI statement
On September 24, 2026, Matthew Ball, Xbox chief strategy officer, told GamesRadar that GTA VI preorders were breaking Xbox records. The full statement reads: “Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of pre-orders to be matching our share of the console market.”

Two points matter here. First, this concerns GTA VI, not Halo, and it describes Xbox’s share of preorders rather than a Store chart. Second, GamesRadar did not publish the underlying figures and did not independently verify them. It is a company’s attributed statement about its own internal analysis, and readers cannot test it from the material published.

- Unit sales per title, per platform, over a stated period.
- Net revenue after platform fees and discounts, not gross sticker value.
- Release timing, and whether the title was available on each platform at launch.
- A baseline, such as the same title’s performance on Xbox alone or a comparable prior release.
- A checkable source, such as a company disclosure or reporting that publishes its figures.
None of these were published alongside the July 2026 chart, the IGN ratio, or the Ball statement.
What this means for your own game spending
For a consumer, a high download rank signals that many buyers on that store chose a title. It does not signal that the title is good value at your price, or that it will hold its price. A practical check before paying:

- Confirm which platforms the listing covers before buying, and do not assume a PS5 listing means a disc or regional availability.
- Read the store’s refund and cancellation terms for preorders before you pay.
- Compare the price with the same edition’s standard price on other stores that sell it, and check whether a later sale is likely before committing early.
If you are weighing Microsoft as an investment, a Store chart is one weak signal among many. The company’s quarterly financial filings are the place to look for reported revenue, and they still do not break out the commercial effect of any single multiplatform title.
Until a publisher discloses unit and revenue figures for a specific title, treat Store rankings as evidence of visibility and interest, and attributed preorder comparisons as unverified claims.
