It relayed a Bloomberg report that Xbox managers anticipated substantial cuts across the group, but gave no headcount and described planned cuts rather than confirmed layoffs. Later Microsoft and Xbox restructuring announcements in 2026 are separate events; they do not establish what happened to the forecast.
What the June 2025 report actually said
Engadget’s June 24, 2025 story attributed the forecast to Bloomberg. It said Xbox managers anticipated “substantial cuts across the entire group.” The story did not name a number of affected employees, identify specific studios, or confirm that the cuts had already taken place. Its phrase “next week” referred to the week after June 24, 2025, not the week after today.
The distinction matters: a report about managers’ expectations is not the same as an official notice that layoffs occurred. The original story does not establish the exact timing, scope, or outcome of the forecast.
How the 2026 restructuring differs
Microsoft and Xbox announced separate restructuring actions in 2026. Those announcements provide later context about the companies’ workforce and organizational changes, but they do not confirm the outcome of the June 2025 forecast.

What Xbox leadership said about the 2026 changes
In the employee memo quoted by AP, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wrote, “Our business today is not healthy.” She also said, “We are operating at margins that are 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses.” These remarks concern the 2026 restructuring context; they are not an explanation of the 2025 forecast.
Microsoft EVP and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman wrote in the July 6, 2026 company-wide notice: “Today we are eliminating around 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of our global workforce.” Microsoft described this as a company-wide reduction, with changes mostly in Commercial and Xbox.
