Yes. On July 24, 2024, more than 500 World of Warcraft developers joined the Communications Workers of America (CWA) as the World of Warcraft Game Makers Guild-CWA (WoWGG-CWA), and Blizzard Entertainment recognized the union after a neutral arbitrator confirmed majority support. The process was not described as an election run by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). In September 2026, CWA announced that WoW workers were among nearly 1,900 Blizzard employees who ratified contracts after two years of bargaining.
Who joined the World of Warcraft union?
CWA’s July 24, 2024 announcement says more than 500 workers on the World of Warcraft development team joined the union. The group was not limited to one job category: CWA listed designers, engineers, producers, artists, quality assurance testers and other game developers. It called the unit wall-to-wall, meaning it represented workers across the team’s job families rather than only a narrow occupational group.
The union is the World of Warcraft Game Makers Guild-CWA, abbreviated WoWGG-CWA. CWA described it as the first wall-to-wall union at Activision Blizzard and, at the time, the largest wall-to-wall union at a Microsoft-owned studio. Those characterizations come from CWA’s announcement.
Was there an election?
CWA said a neutral arbitrator confirmed that a majority of workers supported union representation, either by signing authorization cards or indicating support through an online portal. Blizzard then recognized the union. The announcement does not describe an NLRB-conducted election.

That distinction matters: an election is one route to union representation, but it is not the only one. The NLRB’s general guidance says an employer may also voluntarily recognize a union based on evidence—typically authorization cards—that a majority supports it. After a union is certified or recognized, the employer must bargain with it over terms and conditions of employment. This is general process guidance, not an NLRB ruling about WoWGG-CWA’s recognition. NLRB: Your right to form a union.
What changed after the union formed?
The recognition established WoWGG-CWA as the workers’ representative; it did not itself set out the terms of a contract. CWA’s July 2024 announcement described the organizing effort as following worker activity that began after a 2021 walkout and rally at Blizzard’s Irvine headquarters. At the time, CWA said it looked forward to bargaining for a collective agreement.

A later development came on September 9, 2026, when CWA announced that Blizzard workers ratified contracts after two years of bargaining. CWA said the agreements cover nearly 1,900 workers across represented Blizzard teams and shared services, including World of Warcraft. The other represented groups it named were Quality Assurance, Hearthstone and Warcraft Rumble, Overwatch, Diablo, Platform & Technology, and Story and Franchise Development. CWA described these as Blizzard’s first contracts for these represented workers.
What did the Blizzard contracts include?
CWA says the contracts provide wage increases, grievance procedures, just-cause protections, remote-work and disability accommodations, and a three-day in-office hybrid workweek. It also says Blizzard must discuss, evaluate and bargain over workplace use of artificial intelligence. These are terms CWA attributes to the Blizzard agreements covering the represented groups; the announcement does not establish that every provision is unique to, or worded identically for, the WoW unit.

Layoff and severance protections
CWA reports that union workers have recall rights into open positions across Blizzard bargaining units for 14 months from the layoff announcement. It also says they receive four additional weeks of severance regardless of tenure. These figures are CWA’s descriptions of the contracts, not independently audited figures.
Work arrangements and workplace issues
The contract summary from CWA includes a three-day in-office hybrid workweek, remote-work and disability accommodations, and bargaining over workplace AI use. The summary does not provide the full contract text or further detail on how individual accommodations or AI bargaining are applied.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The two key counts refer to different milestones: CWA reported more than 500 WoW team members in the 2024 union unit, then nearly 1,900 Blizzard workers across several represented units covered by contracts in 2026. CWA supplied both figures and descriptions. The available announcements establish neither an independently audited headcount nor an individual worker’s outcome. The NLRB source explains the general recognition and bargaining framework, but does not document this particular case.
