The strike is over. The union announced a return to work on April 4, and in an agreement reported by the Associated Press on April 12, the parties settled on wage increases over two years and a one-time $750 bonus. Both sides still describe the deal differently, especially on pensions.
What the dispute was about
The public accounts center on four issues. The previous contract expired in July 2025, and Colorado Public Radio reported that a contract extension was canceled after eight months of negotiations. Workers authorized a strike in February 2026, with 99% of those voting in favor, according to the union’s figures as reported by Colorado Public Radio.
Wages and cost of living
Cost-of-living adjustments were a central demand. The union said wages needed to keep pace with living costs and called the offer it received insufficient. JBS said its offer was fair and consistent with the national contract the company reached with UFCW International in 2025, which it described as already delivering higher wages for workers at its other major facilities.
Health care premiums
Rising health care premiums were also listed among the sticking points. For a worker, a premium increase works against a raise: if the employee’s share of premiums climbs by more than a wage gain, take-home pay can fall even as the hourly rate rises.

Safety equipment and personal protective equipment
The union tied the walkout to workplace safety, saying the company violated workers’ rights and ignored concerns about safety and health. UFCW Local 7 also alleged that workers faced charges related to personal protective equipment. Those allegations were the union’s; JBS has not accepted them, and no agency or court ruling on them was reported in the sources reviewed for this article.
Unfair labor practice allegations
UFCW Local 7 alleged that JBS engaged in unfair labor practices and retaliation. JBS said the union ended negotiations and would not let workers vote on the company’s offer. Each claim remains one side’s account.

Two accounts of the bargaining
The union’s position
UFCW Local 7 President Kim Cordova told Colorado Public Radio that “the goal of negotiations is never to go on strike,” adding that when a company violates workers’ rights and ignores concerns about safety and health, workers have no choice but to stand together. In its April 4 release, the union said workers would continue to fight until JBS ends what it called unfair labor practices and offers a contract that protects workers and pays a livable wage.

JBS’s position
In its March response, quoted by Colorado Public Radio, JBS called its offer “strong, fair, and consistent with the historic national contract reached in 2025 in partnership with UFCW International.” The company said that agreement had already delivered higher wages, a secure pension, and long-term financial stability at its other major facilities. JBS maintained that the union ended negotiations rather than letting workers vote on the offer.
What the final agreement included
AP reported that the agreement provides wage increases over two years and a one-time $750 bonus. Cordova told AP, “This is what union power looks like,” and said the workers’ picket through extreme weather had been rewarded. The union presented the deal as gains for workers.

A letter from Senator Cory Booker and co-signing senators to JBS, dated April 7, 2026, describes the Greeley facility as employing around 3,800 workers, processing up to 6,000 cattle a day, and accounting for roughly 5% of U.S. beef-processing capacity. Those figures come from the senators’ letter; JBS’s own figures were not part of the reporting reviewed here.

What a strike like this means for your paycheck
The Greeley dispute is a useful case study for anyone reading a union contract or a benefits summary. Several of its issues translate directly into household finances:
- Raises versus bonuses. A percentage wage increase raises the base rate that future pay, overtime, and benefit calculations are built on. A one-time bonus does not carry forward, so the two should not be compared dollar for dollar.
- Premium share. Check your employee share of health premiums, not only the employer’s headline contribution. A premium increase can absorb a raise.
- Pension versus retirement plan. Removing a pension shifts retirement risk to the worker. If your employer changes or freezes a plan, ask what replaces it and what it will cost you.
- Lost wages during a walkout. Strikers generally are not paid for days they are off the job. Health coverage during a strike depends on the contract and plan rules, so confirm with your employer or benefits administrator how coverage and premiums are handled.
The dispute also shows how much rests on written terms. Each side described the offer, the bargaining process, and the final deal in its own words, and the public record does not yet include an independent ruling on the labor-practice claims. Readers who want to verify a specific term should look for the contract text itself, which was not part of the reporting reviewed here.
