For U.S. households, October is a useful time to reduce drafts, check heating equipment, and prepare for outages and winter travel. These steps can help limit avoidable energy use and prevent some cold-weather problems, but none guarantees a lower bill. Renters, apartment residents, and people in warmer climates may need to adapt the checklist to their home and local conditions.
1. Find and seal drafts
Check around exterior doors and windows for noticeable gaps or moving air. Caulk appropriate fixed gaps; use weatherstripping on parts that open and close. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends sealing and weatherizing windows, and the CDC includes caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows in home preparation. If you rent, ask your landlord before making alterations. Removable draft stoppers or temporary measures may be more suitable, but do not block required ventilation or exits. For a larger problem, ask whether the property owner can arrange an energy assessment or weatherization work.
2. Check your heating filter
Inspect the heating-system filter monthly during the heating season and replace it when dirty. DOE gives at least every three months as a general minimum, but the right interval depends on the system, filter, and use. As DOE explains, “Dirty filters trap lint, pollen, dust, and more that can reduce airflow.” Follow the equipment and filter instructions, and make sure the replacement fits the system. A filter with a different size or specification is not automatically a suitable substitute. Read DOE’s guidance on maintaining heating and cooling equipment.

3. Arrange heating-system maintenance
Schedule annual professional maintenance for a furnace or heat pump before cold weather makes appointments harder to get. DOE recommends annual maintenance; the CDC advises having the furnace system and vent checked by a qualified technician each winter season. Ask the technician to check the equipment and venting, and keep any service recommendations with your home records. 4. Reduce avoidable heating use
Use a programmable thermostat, if you have one, to align heating with the times people are home and awake. If you adjust settings manually, choose a schedule that suits household comfort and health needs; there is no single temperature that is right for every home or person. Keep doors to unused areas closed where appropriate, but do not restrict airflow in a way that conflicts with your heating system’s instructions. 5. Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Test smoke alarms and battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries or devices as their instructions require. Follow local code for alarm placement and the manufacturer’s directions. If you use fuel-burning equipment, make sure it vents outdoors as designed. Never use an oven or an outdoor fuel-burning device as an indoor heater. The CDC’s winter safety guidance covers detectors and safe use of fuel-burning equipment.
6. Prepare for a home power outage
Set aside supplies before a storm: a flashlight and batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, drinking water, food that does not require cooking, and essential medicines. Think through how you will stay warm safely if power or heat is interrupted. Follow local emergency-management advice, and never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space; keep it outdoors and away from windows and doors according to its instructions. 7. Get your vehicle ready for winter
Check tire condition and pressure, and make sure key vehicle systems are in good working order. Keep a scraper, small shovel, warm clothing or a blanket, flashlight, water, and first-aid supplies in the vehicle. Tailor the kit to your routes, climate, and passengers; supplies are most useful when they are accessible and in usable condition.
