Russian tax authorities reportedly suspended operations on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s accounts in July 2024 after he failed to pay an assessment for taxes, penalties and fines tied to foreign-source income earned during the 2019–2021 tax years. Headlines often called the accounts “seized” or “frozen,” but the Federal Tax Service (FTS) action reported at the time was a suspension of account operations—not proof that authorities confiscated all his money or affected accounts worldwide.
Why did Russian authorities restrict the accounts?
The FTS told RBC that a completed on-site tax audit found unpaid taxes, penalties and fines connected to income earned abroad during the 2019–2021 tax years. The audit decision was issued on December 22, 2023, and became legally effective on April 23, 2024. The agency said collection followed after the payment demand was not met. RBC reported the FTS explanation on July 1, 2024.
That is the stated basis for the restrictions. The reports do not establish what specific foreign income or transactions were assessed, so it would be inaccurate to characterize the case more specifically.
What does “seized” mean in this case?
Although some coverage used “seized” or “arrested,” the reported FTS action was a suspension of operations on accounts. That terminology indicates restrictions on account activity; it does not, by itself, establish that the government confiscated the funds or took ownership of all Nurmagomedov’s assets. Nor do the reports show that every account, including accounts outside Russia, was affected. Kommersant’s July 1, 2024 report described the account-operation suspension and the tax-account balance.

Why do reports give different debt figures?
The figures in coverage refer to different records and stages of collection. The sources do not reconcile them into one final liability, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Amount | What the source reported |
|---|---|
| 79.2 million rubles | RBC said the FTS website showed this as a negative balance on Nurmagomedov’s tax account in July 2024. Kommersant also reported this account balance. |
| 297 million rubles | Mash and REN TV, as relayed by RBC in July 2024, described this as the debt associated with the account restrictions. It is a media-reported figure, not the 79.2 million ruble tax-account balance. |
| 79,376,334.14 rubles | RBC reported on July 23, 2024, that the Federal Bailiff Service (FSSP) database showed enforcement proceedings for this amount, with an FSSP press-office confirmation. RBC’s enforcement report. |
| 302 million rubles | Vedomosti reported on August 15, 2024, citing FSSP data, that Nurmagomedov had paid this amount in state debts. Vedomosti’s payment report. |
These are distinct reported amounts: a tax-account balance, a debt figure in media reports, an enforcement proceeding and a later reported payment. The available reporting does not explain how they relate mathematically or whether every figure concerns precisely the same liability.

What happened, and when?
- December 22, 2023: The FTS issued its decision following an on-site tax audit, according to its account reported by RBC.
- April 23, 2024: The FTS decision became legally effective.
- May 11, 2024: RBC reported that Nurmagomedov’s uncle, Magomed Nurmagomedov, denied an earlier Mash allegation about a 306 million ruble debt and blocks affecting Eagle FC and a charitable foundation. That denial preceded the FTS explanation of the later-reported individual tax assessment; it addressed an earlier report and should not be treated as a rebuttal to the agency’s stated assessment. RBC’s May report.
- July 1, 2024: Reports described restrictions on Nurmagomedov’s accounts and gave the differing account-balance and debt figures.
- July 23, 2024: RBC reported FSSP enforcement proceedings for 79,376,334.14 rubles.
- August 15, 2024: Vedomosti reported, citing FSSP data, that 302 million rubles in state debts had been paid.
Were the accounts unfrozen after the reported payment?
The latest development established in the cited reporting is the August 2024 report that the state debts had been paid. That report does not confirm that the FTS formally lifted every account restriction. The available sources also do not establish whether later restrictions were imposed. Accordingly, payment was reported, but the current status of the accounts is not verified by these reports.
