United is launching a more upscale premium economy cabin because premium travel is becoming a bigger source of revenue—and Premium Plus gives the airline a way to serve passengers who want more comfort than economy without paying for Polaris business class. The new cabin is part of United’s “Elevated” interior for its Boeing 787-9 fleet. United calls its premium economy product United Premium Plus; it sits above Economy Plus and below Polaris.
Why United is investing in Premium Plus
The clearest financial signal is the growth in premium travel. United’s premium revenue rose 9% in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 11% for the full year, and the airline flew a record 27.4 million premium seats in 2025, equal to 12% of all seats flown. Those figures were reported as United results by Simple Flying; the revenue figures were not independently confirmed against United’s earnings release.
Premium Plus is the middle option in that strategy: it is a distinct cabin for travelers willing to pay more than an economy fare for additional space and comfort, but not a Polaris fare. Simple Flying’s analysis argues that United is increasingly focused on cabin mix and revenue per seat, rather than maximizing the number of seats alone. That is an outlet’s interpretation, not a stated United policy.
The new aircraft also gives United a chance to make that middle cabin feel more premium. United says Premium Plus includes “elements normally reserved for United Polaris customers,” according to Simple Flying’s coverage. The design is also part of a broader fleet investment: on March 24, 2026, United announced plans to add more than 250 aircraft over the next two years, including new premium experiences, subfleets, seats and amenities.

What is new in United Premium Plus
The Elevated 787-9 is reported to have 35 Premium Plus seats across five rows in a 2-3-2 layout. The reported seat dimensions are 38 inches of pitch and 20 inches of width; those measurements come from Simple Flying and have not been verified on a United page.
- More personal entertainment: a 16-inch 4K OLED screen and Bluetooth audio pairing.
- Charging: wireless charging, described as a first for United Premium Plus.
- More privacy and convenience: a privacy divider with a built-in reading light, also described as a first for the cabin.
- Cabin finishes: soft-touch materials and quartzite cocktail tables.
These are features of the new Premium Plus cabin, not a promise that every United Premium Plus seat across the fleet has them. United’s brand name also matters when comparing products: “premium economy” is the general category; United Premium Plus is its specific product.

How the Elevated 787-9 cabin is arranged
United lists 222 seats on the aircraft, including 99 Polaris or Premium Plus seats. The airline says that is the highest premium-seat proportion of any U.S. carrier. The reported premium breakdown is eight Polaris Studio suites, 56 standard Polaris seats and 35 Premium Plus seats.

Published economy layouts differ: one report gives 33 Economy Plus and 90 standard economy seats, while a later United listing gives 39 Economy Plus and 84 standard economy seats. Both add up to 123 economy-class seats, so the combined figure is the more reliable comparison until United confirms the split.

The aircraft’s Polaris Studio suites are a separate business-class product, not part of Premium Plus. United describes Studio as 25% larger than standard Polaris, with privacy doors, an ottoman for a companion and a 27-inch 4K OLED screen. The airline says that screen is the largest among U.S. carriers.
Where and when to find the new cabin
The first international flight of an Elevated 787-9 was United flight UA1 from San Francisco to Singapore on April 22, 2026. Service from San Francisco to London Heathrow on UA901 began April 30, 2026. Domestic San Francisco–Houston flights were used beforehand as shakedown flights, and United has slated an IAH debut for fall 2026. The airline plans to have 33 Elevated 787-9s by 2028.

Those are identified launch routes and milestones, not a complete route map. The available announcements do not establish every future route that will receive the aircraft. Because aircraft assignments can change, check the aircraft type and seat map for the specific flight before paying extra for the new cabin’s features.

Beginning in April 2026, United introduced tiered fares for Polaris and Premium Plus on select long-haul, transcontinental and Hawaii flights. For a personal-finance decision, compare the total cost—not just the headline fare—with the alternatives. Check the price gap between Premium Plus and Economy Plus, what each fare tier includes, and whether the seat and cabin features matter enough for the length and purpose of your trip. Miles and upgrade rules also matter, but the available information here does not establish the applicable rules for a particular ticket.
What this launch says about United’s broader cabin strategy
United’s investment is not limited to premium cabins. On July 14, 2026, it announced further economy innovations, including Economy Plus seats with extra elbow room on the Airbus A321XLR. That development reinforces that the airline is adjusting multiple parts of the cabin, while the Elevated 787-9 makes its premium offer more prominent.
