Airbus opened a second A320 Family final assembly line in Mobile, Alabama, on 13 October 2025. The company says the new line effectively doubles the site’s A320 Family production capacity, adding room to support Airbus’s worldwide production ramp-up. But Airbus has not published a Mobile-specific monthly output target or a measured increase in completed aircraft attributable to the line.
Why is Airbus increasing A320 production in the United States?
The Mobile expansion is part of Airbus’s global effort to build more A320 Family aircraft. In June 2026, Airbus said it was targeting production of 70–75 aircraft per month worldwide by the end of 2027, with the rate stabilizing at 75 thereafter. That target covers the global A320 Family network, not the Alabama factory alone.
Demand is one measure of the scale of the ramp-up. Airbus reported an A320 Family backlog of 7,418 aircraft as of the end of March 2026. The figure is a dated snapshot, not a current order count, and it does not mean every aircraft in the backlog will be built in Mobile.
What changed at the Mobile factory?
Before the expansion, Mobile had one A320 Family final assembly line. The second line, inaugurated in October 2025, brings the site to two A320 Family lines alongside its separate A220 line. Airbus describes the A320 capacity effect as “effectively doubled”; that is a company statement about capacity, not evidence that completed aircraft output or deliveries have already doubled.

The new line adds 350,000 square feet of manufacturing, office, and logistics space. The broader project also includes double-bay A320 production hangars, additional paint shops, a distribution center, and expansions to the transhipment hangar and delivery center. Airbus said the expansion added approximately 1,000 jobs.

What the capacity claim does—and does not—tell you
A second final assembly line gives Airbus more capacity at Mobile and adds flexibility to its production network. It is reasonable to describe the site as better positioned to contribute to the global ramp-up. The public figures do not establish how many more aircraft Mobile will complete each month, how quickly its output will rise, or what share of the worldwide target it will supply.

Airbus’s U.S. corporate page, accessed on 8 October 2026, says the Mobile site had produced more than 600 aircraft across the A220 and A320 Family programs. That cumulative total combines both programs; it is not an A320-only production count.
