Two former Spirit Airlines Airbus A320neos, reported at 3.5 and 4 years old, were sold to a parts supplier for teardown rather than placed with another operator as complete aircraft. The most defensible explanation is that, for these assets in this market, parts recovery made more commercial sense. Engines were in short supply, repair and inspection waits were long, and Spirit’s bankruptcy pushed its fleet into a fast sale process. The reporting does not publish a valuation for either aircraft, so whether the parts were actually worth more than the complete jets is not established.
What happened
Aviation Week reported that the parts supplier EirTrade Aviation bought two ex-Spirit A320neo airframes from the lessor Aviation Capital Group. The aircraft were 3.5 and 4 years old. Teardown was to take place in Goodyear, Arizona, and the usable parts were to go to EirTrade’s hub in Dallas.
The deal was not isolated. Reuters reported that Spirit stopped operating on May 1, 2026, and that its bankruptcy brought additional near-new A320neos into the teardown market. Reuters also reported that EirTrade Aviation and RESIDCO announced plans in February 2026 to dismantle two near-new Spirit A320neos for parts.
Aviation Week later reported that Setna iO bought another ex-Spirit A320neo for teardown by AerSale in Goodyear. Parts from that aircraft were to move through Setna’s repair network as used serviceable material. Aviation Week also reported public purchases by other aftermarket suppliers.

Why a young airframe can be worth more in pieces
Age and market value are different measures. A nearly new jet can still be worth less as a complete aircraft than the sum of its components if the components are scarce and the aircraft cannot fly without them. The A320neo’s engines are the central case.
Engine supply is the main constraint
Reuters reported in 2026 that Pratt & Whitney GTF engines power at least 40% of A320neos in service. Reuters also reported that the GTF shortage had already been driving teardowns. Airlines faced lengthy waits for engine inspections and repairs after a manufacturing problem, which left aircraft on the ground.

That shortage is what makes engines from a retired or stored jet valuable. Reuters reported that GTF engines removed from Spirit A320s were being leased to customers to support aircraft otherwise grounded for lack of engines. Willis Lease Finance Corp CEO Austin Willis told Reuters: “We are seeing some of the GTF engines from the Spirit A320s being removed from the airframes and leased out to customers to support (aircraft on the ground),” adding: “This is providing some limited temporary relief from the supply/demand imbalance.”
Components beyond engines
Engines were not the only source of value. Reuters reported demand for auxiliary power units, landing gear, and flight controls. Aviation Week reported that one PW1100 engine transaction included in-demand line-replaceable and buyer-furnished equipment components. KP Aviation Chief Commercial Officer Scott Butler told Reuters: “There’s a lot of money in the engines.” That remark describes aftermarket engine demand, not a disclosed valuation for either aircraft.

How Spirit’s bankruptcy shaped the sale
Spirit’s Chapter 11 restructuring reduced its fleet sharply. Aviation Week reported that Spirit rejected around 100 A320-family aircraft, mostly Neos, in bankruptcy. A proposed restructured fleet was roughly 100 aircraft, with only 10 to 28 A320neo-family units.
Spirit later stopped flying. The Associated Press reported that the bankruptcy court approved a rapid wind-down to sell aircraft, engines, spare parts, gates, and landing slots for creditors. At that point Spirit’s assets included 114 A320-family aircraft, some leased and some owned.

Spirit’s attorney told the AP that higher fuel expenses in March and April 2026 drained liquidity and derailed the restructuring. That explains the liquidation context. It does not establish that fuel costs alone drove the decision to tear down these two particular aircraft.

| Factor | Why it matters | What the reporting shows for these two airframes |
|---|---|---|
| Engine inclusion and serviceability | Engines are the most sought-after component when GTF supply is tight | Not stated for these aircraft; GTF engines from Spirit A320s were reported in demand |
| Time and cost to inspect, repair, and return to service | Long GTF inspection and repair waits lower the value of a grounded jet | Not stated for these aircraft |
| Current demand and lead times for engines and components | Strong demand supports parts pricing | Demand for engines, APUs, landing gear, and flight controls was reported; lead times for these airframes not stated |
| Expected recovery from airframe and parts | Determines whether teardown beats a whole-aircraft sale | Not stated; no valuation was disclosed |
| Ownership, lease, and sale constraints | Lease terms and bankruptcy-sale rules limit the options | Lease terms for these two airframes not stated; the bankruptcy court approved a wind-down sale process |
What remains unverified
- The Aviation Week report does not name the registrations of the two airframes.
- No reviewed report establishes a mechanical defect in these aircraft.
- No reviewed report establishes a formal retirement or a retirement date for either aircraft. The “not retired yet” framing reflects their young age and continued market value, not a documented operating status.
- No report discloses a dollar comparison between resale of the complete aircraft and the value of the parts.
Those gaps mean the explanation here is a reasoned reading of market conditions, not a confirmed account of what the owners calculated.
What this means for judging asset value
The Spirit case is useful for anyone who owns or evaluates a valuable asset. Age and purchase price are easy to see, but they rarely set the sale value on their own. The following questions do more work:
- Is the asset’s value tied to one expensive component that the market is short of, and can that component be separated from the rest?
- How long would it take to make the asset usable again, and who pays for the waiting time?
- Is the seller forced to sell on a timeline set by a creditor, a lease return, or a court?
- Does the seller have a buyer for the whole asset, or only for the parts?
Those questions apply to cars, equipment, and collectibles as well as aircraft. In each case, the answer depends on the facts of the specific asset, and the public record is often incomplete.
Spirit Airlines’ shutdown and the A320neo parts market are also specific. They do not show that every nearly new aircraft is headed for teardown.
