The goal was to extend AI from data centers toward embedded devices at the “edge” of cloud computing; the announcement described a strategy, not proof that a combined platform or successful product line followed.
What happened to Wave Computing and MIPS?
EE Times reported on June 13, 2018, that Wave Computing planned to buy MIPS. Two days later, Wave announced that it had acquired MIPS Tech, Inc., formerly MIPS Technologies. MIPS was a provider of RISC processor intellectual property and licensable CPU cores—not a consumer chip brand selling retail processors. Wave’s June 15 announcement said MIPS would operate as an IP business unit and continue licensing its technology.

The distinction matters: the deal joined businesses and technologies, rather than simply adding a line of finished chips to Wave’s product catalogue.
Why did an AI startup want a processor-IP company?
Wave’s stated ambition was to move beyond AI systems for data centers and into inference in embedded and edge applications. AI training develops a model, typically using substantial computing resources; inference uses a trained model to produce outputs. Wave presented its dataflow architecture as the AI side of the proposed combination and MIPS’s RISC architecture and licensable CPU cores as a way to reach devices where AI processing could take place closer to users or equipment.
#1 Best Overall
- Product advantages:Core board module programming development board's the speed of developing product prototypes is faster, the program is easier to achieve modularity, and maintenance is more convenient
- More suitable for beginners:Programming development board does not require complicated settings, installation of special software and additional hardware, or compilation and downloading. Programming in any text editor via a USB
- Most of the hardware functions:Core board module programming development board can be driven by a single command, and can be developed quickly without understanding the underlying hardware. Very good for product prototyping and software migration, making the development process easy and full of fun
- Programming development board includes 4 LEDs on the for pyboard, the USR button, the reset button and the booto button, that can indicate and use to interact with the system, built-in USB, with flash and reset switches, easy to program
- Applicable users:Core board module programming development board is a program development learning tool for makers, DIY enthusiasts, and engineers
As EE Times reported at the time, CEO Derek Meyer said, “Our strategy has always been to push our dataflow fabric out to the edge.” That was the company’s strategic rationale, not independent evidence that the technologies were successfully integrated or adopted.

AI-enabled MIPS licensing and edge systems
In October 2018, Wave outlined a roadmap for AI-enabled MIPS licensing, CPU cores for edge applications and MIPS-based system-on-chip solutions. It also discussed functional-safety work for automotive applications. Those statements described planned directions; the announcements cited here do not establish that the products shipped or achieved commercial adoption.
MIPS Open
In December 2018, Wave announced MIPS Open. Under the announced program, participants could access the then-current 32-bit and 64-bit MIPS instruction-set architecture versions without licensing or royalty fees, with use licensed under MIPS patents. The announcement describes the historical offer; it does not establish that the program or those terms remain available today.

What happened after the acquisition?
MIPS reported on March 1, 2021, that Wave and its subsidiaries had emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The reorganized business would be known as MIPS. According to MIPS’s announcement, a bankruptcy auction had taken place in December 2020, and Tallwood Venture Capital won with a restructuring bid valued at $61 million and would take majority ownership.
That is the latest company-status information established by the cited announcements. It does not confirm MIPS’s ownership or operating status in 2026, nor the current availability or terms of MIPS licensing.
How should the market-size figures be read?
Wave’s June 15, 2018 announcement attributed two projections to Tractica: $50 billion for AI solutions in data-center and on-premise environments, and $100 billion for solutions at the “Edge of Cloud.” These were historical market estimates cited by Wave, not revenue figures or evidence that the acquisition captured either market.
The acquisition story is therefore best understood as a strategic bet: Wave sought to add processor IP and a licensing business to its AI ambitions. The cited statements document the acquisition, announced roadmap and later restructuring, but do not demonstrate that the proposed product combination became a commercial success.
