In late August and early September 2025, the company described a more selective approach: decide where AI makes sense, and have employees monitor it or take over when needed. That discussion followed customer complaints and a viral prank involving an order for 18,000 cups of water. Taco Bell said its voice-AI technology remained part of its future.
Why is Taco Bell slowing its AI drive-thru rollout?
The reconsideration followed a rollout that began well before the viral clips. On July 31, 2024, Yum! Brands said Voice AI was already operating in more than 100 U.S. Taco Bell drive-thrus across 13 states, and announced plans to expand to hundreds of locations by the end of that year. The hundreds figure was a target, not confirmation that it was met. Yum! Brands’ announcement described the technology as a way to optimize operations and improve customer satisfaction; those were company-stated goals, not independently verified results.

By August 30, 2025, TechCrunch reported that the system had reached more than 500 drive-thrus. That was a contemporaneous reported figure, not a current location count. In coverage at the end of August and start of September, Taco Bell technology chief Dane Mathews discussed weighing the right setting for AI against human order-taking. He told TechCrunch, “Sometimes it lets me down, but sometimes it really surprises me.”
The distinction matters: the public comments described adjusting deployment choices, not abandoning the technology. Mathews said busy restaurants may be better served by human order-takers, and described coaching staff to monitor AI and jump in when necessary. The comments did not establish a detailed policy for every store or time of day.

What happened when someone ordered 18,000 cups of water?
A customer’s request for “18,000 water cups” became a viral example of customers trolling the voice-ordering system. Nation’s Restaurant News reported that a human employee took over after the glitch. It illustrates how an unusual or deliberately disruptive request can require staff intervention; it is not a controlled test of the system’s accuracy or evidence of how often failures happen.
Nation’s Restaurant News also described online complaints about inaccurate orders, interruptions, pauses, and slower service. These are reported grievances from online discussion, not findings from a representative customer survey. The coverage did not provide an independently measured failure rate or a controlled comparison of AI and human order-taking.

Did Taco Bell cancel its AI drive-thru?
No cancellation was announced in the September 2025 coverage. In a statement to Nation’s Restaurant News, Taco Bell said it “continues to see the technology as a core part of our future” and would keep investing, learning, improving, and scaling it. That is the company’s stated position; it does not mean every rollout plan or store-level practice remained unchanged.
The Independent’s August 29, 2025 account likewise described the deployment approach as still developing rather than a finalized, detailed policy. The available reports establish a reconsideration of where and how the system is used, not a confirmed shutdown. They do not establish subsequent policy changes or the current footprint as of October 2026.

How do AI-led and human-led ordering differ?
| Approach | What the reporting supports | What remains unproven |
|---|---|---|
| AI-led order-taking | Taco Bell has described Voice AI as a technology it intends to keep developing. Mathews said the company considers where and when to use it. | No independently verified figures establish its effect on accuracy, wait times, workload, or customer experience. |
| Human-led or human-monitored ordering | Mathews cited busy restaurants as a case where human order-takers may be preferable, and described staff monitoring AI and intervening as needed. | The reporting does not show that human ordering is categorically more accurate or faster, or specify a universal customer right or store policy. |
The 2024 company announcement framed accuracy, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction as intended outcomes. The 2025 coverage adds context about complaints and intervention, but supplies no controlled performance results for either approach. On the evidence available, the practical issue is choosing the right deployment context and ensuring staff can step in—not declaring one method universally superior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you ask a human to take your Taco Bell drive-thru order?
The 2025 comments indicate that staff may monitor the AI and intervene, but they do not establish a chain-wide rule that customers can request a human at every restaurant. If the system is having trouble with your order, tell the employee at the speaker or window; the reporting documents human takeover in at least one incident, not a guaranteed procedure at every location.
