Starbucks plans to sunset its mobile-order and pickup-only store concept in fiscal 2026—not mobile ordering itself. The company’s stated bet is that customers can keep the convenience of ordering in its app while picking up inside a more welcoming coffeehouse, with seating and opportunities for human interaction. As of October 8, 2026, Starbucks has not publicly confirmed that every pickup-only location has closed or converted.
Why Starbucks is moving away from pickup-only stores
Starbucks helped popularize app-based ordering, but its pickup-only format removed much of what the company now says it wants its coffeehouses to offer: a welcoming place to sit, spend time and interact with baristas. In remarks from an investor call reported by GeekWire on August 1, 2025, CEO Brian Niccol called the format “overly transactional and lacking the warmth and human connection that defines our brand.”
Niccol said Starbucks believed it could preserve the convenience of mobile orders in its community coffeehouses: “We have a strong digital offering and believe we can deliver the same level of convenience through our community coffeehouses with a superior mobile order and pay experience.”
The direction fits Starbucks’ broader “Back to Starbucks” positioning. In a September 25, 2025 message, Niccol described the goal as “a warm and welcoming space with a great atmosphere and a seat for every occasion.” That is the company’s stated strategy, not evidence that every customer will experience faster service or a better visit.

What the planned change means for customers
The format decision is about the kind of store Starbucks operates, not whether customers can place an order on their phones. The contrast is between a location designed primarily for order pickup and a coffeehouse intended to combine app convenience with seating and in-person service.
| Dimension | Pickup-only concept | Stated coffeehouse direction |
|---|---|---|
| Seating and time in store | Designed around pickup rather than a conventional café visit. | Starbucks says it wants welcoming spaces with seating for different occasions. |
| Customer interaction | The visit centers on collecting a prepared order. | The company says it wants greater warmth and human connection. |
| Mobile convenience | Mobile ordering and pickup are central to the format. | Starbucks says mobile ordering can continue through community coffeehouses. |
| How the company evaluates locations | The 2025 announcement did not give a store-by-store conversion plan or count. | Starbucks has cited customer and partner experience and acceptable financial performance in a separate 2026 portfolio review. |
The table describes Starbucks’ stated format and aims; it does not establish measured outcomes such as service speed, customer satisfaction or the financial performance of individual locations.

Is Starbucks ending mobile orders?
No. Starbucks continued to develop mobile-order features after announcing the planned sunset of pickup-only stores. On April 22, 2026, the company said scheduled ordering would launch May 11 across North American coffeehouses where Mobile Order & Pay was available. Customers could choose a pickup time up to an hour ahead, with five-minute pickup windows where offered. Availability may vary by location.
Starbucks also described Smart Queue, an algorithm that sequences and balances orders across café, drive-thru and Mobile Order & Pay. These features show that the company’s plan was to change the store format while continuing mobile ordering—not to abandon digital pickup.

How the pickup-only plan differs from the 2026 store closures
On September 24, 2026, Starbucks COO Mike Grams announced approximately 250 planned coffeehouse closures in North America after a portfolio review. Grams said the company did not believe it could consistently deliver the desired customer and partner experience at those locations or see a path to acceptable financial performance. He described the closures as approximately 1% of more than 18,000 North American coffeehouses.
That figure is not a count of pickup-only stores. Starbucks did not identify the 250 locations as pickup-only in its September 24 statement, which announced a wider portfolio review. The decision to sunset the pickup-only concept and the later broad closure plan should not be treated as the same action.

Starbucks has also discussed store investment alongside closures. In January 2026, the company described smaller new-store formats that would retain comfortable seating, drive-thru service and mobile-order pickup capacity. The Associated Press reported that Starbucks planned to add 25,000 seats to U.S. cafés by the end of its fiscal year, with retrofit work then expected to continue through 2028. Those were plans reported at the time, not confirmation that the seating had been added or that every pickup-only location would be converted.

As of October 8, 2026, the available company statements and reporting establish Starbucks’ plan to sunset the pickup-only concept in fiscal 2026, but they do not confirm that every such store had closed, converted or received an exception. The September 2026 closure announcement does not resolve that question because it does not identify which locations, if any, were pickup-only.

For customers, the practical expectation is that mobile ordering continues, while the mix of store formats may change. A particular store’s status and available pickup options depend on its location and current operations.
What the shift signals about Starbucks’ business strategy
The change reflects a tension between speed-oriented digital ordering and the company’s effort to make its cafés feel like places to stay, not just collection points. Starbucks is presenting its community coffeehouses as a way to combine those goals: digital ordering and order sequencing on one side, seating and a more personal in-store experience on the other.
The company has not published a precise count of pickup-only stores or a location-by-location account of their conversion and closure progress. Nor do the cited announcements establish whether the new approach will improve the experience or financial results. What is clear is the strategic distinction: Starbucks announced a plan to retire a store concept it considered too transactional while continuing to invest in mobile ordering and a broader coffeehouse experience.
