On April 4, 2025, Nintendo told TechCrunch that U.S. preorders would not begin on the planned April 9 date “in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” The company said it would announce new timing later and that the June 5 launch date was unchanged. TechCrunch reported Nintendo’s statement.

That explanation connects the pause to Nintendo’s assessment of tariff risk and broader market conditions. It does not establish that a particular tariff rate directly caused a specific increase in the console’s price; Nintendo did not announce such an increase in the subsequent U.S. update.
When did U.S. preorders begin, and was the launch delayed?
Nintendo’s April 18 update set U.S. retail preorders to begin April 24, 2025, replacing the original April 9 date. The console launched on June 5, 2025, as planned. Both dates are historical, not upcoming preorder or launch dates. Nintendo’s April 18 announcement confirmed the revised preorder date and apologized for the delay.

Retailer experiences varied. Target later reported that its online preorder opening on April 24 sold out in less than two hours. The Associated Press also reported high demand, wait problems and quick sellouts at some participating retailers. Those accounts describe particular retailers and buyers; they do not show that every retailer sold out or that every customer encountered the same problems. Did tariffs change the Switch 2 price?
In its April 18, 2025 U.S. update, Nintendo maintained the previously announced suggested retail prices for the console and the Mario Kart World bundle. It separately said accessories would receive price adjustments because of changes in market conditions, and that adjustments to other Nintendo products could be possible later depending on those conditions. So “Nintendo held prices” applies to the announced console and bundle prices in that update, not to every product or future pricing.

What the preorder delay means for buyers now
