Nintendo cut its forecast for original Switch hardware sales after reporting lower sales and profit for the nine months ended December 31, 2024. The company reduced its estimate for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, from 12.5 million consoles to 11 million. These are historical FY2025 figures, not a statement of Nintendo’s current sales outlook.
What Nintendo reported in February 2025
Nintendo’s February 4, 2025 results covered April through December 2024—not just the December quarter. For that nine-month period, net sales were ¥956.218 billion, down about 31% from a year earlier. Profit attributable to owners was ¥237.189 billion, down about 42%. These are separate measures: net sales are revenue, while profit attributable to owners is the amount remaining for shareholders after expenses and other items.
The company sold 9.54 million original Switch hardware units during the nine months. Switch software sales were 108.91 million units, a 24.4% year-over-year decline. Nintendo characterized the system’s performance in context, saying, “Even so, sales remained steady for a platform in its eighth year.” The figures and quote are from Nintendo’s FY2025 nine-month earnings release.
Why the Switch forecast was cut
Nintendo lowered its full-year original Switch hardware sales forecast from 12.5 million units to 11 million. The reduced estimate followed nine-month hardware sales of 9.54 million units and declining software sales as the platform entered its eighth year. The release does not establish that one specific factor alone caused the revision; it reports the lowered estimate alongside the period’s results.

| Measure | Previous or comparison figure | Reported figure |
|---|---|---|
| FY2025 original Switch hardware forecast | 12.5 million units | 11 million units after revision |
| Original Switch hardware sold, April–December 2024 | Prior-year comparison: not stated here as a unit total; Nintendo reported the year-over-year comparison in its release | 9.54 million units |
| Switch software sold, April–December 2024 | Prior-year period implied by the reported change; unit total not stated here | 108.91 million units, down 24.4% year over year |
The 11 million figure was guidance for the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, not realized sales. Nintendo cautioned that forecasts depend on management assumptions and available information and can differ materially from actual results, including because of foreign-exchange movements and changes in market conditions.
What “revenues fall again” means
The headline’s revenue decline refers to net sales falling about 31% year over year in the nine months through December 2024. Profit attributable to owners also fell, by about 42%. The figures should not be read as standalone December-quarter results or as a permanent trend in Nintendo’s finances; they describe one reporting period and its comparison with the prior year.

Later results put the 2025 story in context
Nintendo’s FY2027 first-quarter results, for April through June 2026, were a later period. The company reported net sales of ¥517.8 billion, down 9.5% year over year, and profit attributable to owners of ¥147.4 billion, up 53.5%. Nintendo said its full-year forecast, published May 8, 2026, was unchanged. The mixed direction shows why revenue and profit should be tracked separately. No. The FY2025 forecast described expected original Switch sales through March 31, 2025; it does not establish present-day availability or sales. It also concerns original Switch hardware, not Switch 2. The figures should not be used to infer current product availability or to combine the two systems’ sales.
