Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Palworld developer Pocketpair in Tokyo District Court, alleging patent infringement—not, in their public announcement, copyright infringement for copying Pokémon characters. They sought an injunction and damages. Pocketpair disputes the allegations and says the patents are invalid; the case’s outcome is not established by the latest status information available as of October 8, 2026.
What is the lawsuit about?
Nintendo Co., Ltd. and The Pokémon Company announced on September 19, 2024, that they had filed suit against Pocketpair, Inc. the previous day. Their announcement describes the case as a patent-infringement suit and says they are seeking an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages. That is the plaintiffs’ position and requested relief, not a court finding. The announcement does not frame the case as a copyright claim.

The distinction matters because public discussion often compares Palworld’s creatures and gameplay with Pokémon. Those comparisons do not establish what the lawsuit claims. The stated legal basis in Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s announcement is patent infringement.
Which patents and damages did Pocketpair report?
In a November 8, 2024, statement, Pocketpair said the plaintiffs identified three Japanese patents. Pocketpair also reported the relief the plaintiffs requested; these amounts are claims reported by the developer, not damages awarded by a court.

The patent numbers, registration dates and description of the requested relief above come from Pocketpair’s account, not an independently reviewed court docket.
What does Pocketpair say?
Pocketpair said on May 8, 2025, that it disputes the allegations and asserts that the patents are invalid. That is the developer’s defense; it is not a ruling that the patents are invalid.

The developer also attributed two gameplay changes to the ongoing litigation:
- Pal Sphere summoning: Pocketpair said patch v0.3.11, released November 30, 2024, replaced throwing a Pal Sphere to summon a Pal with a static summon beside the player.
- Gliding: Pocketpair said patch v0.5.5 changed the mechanic so players use an inventory glider rather than a Pal.
These are Pocketpair’s explanations of changes to the game, not a court determination about which mechanics infringe a patent.

Has Nintendo won the Palworld lawsuit?
No verified win or final decision is established here. A GamesRadar report published in June 2026 described the case as ongoing and said a court presentation was scheduled for October 2026, followed by a court opinion scheduled for November. As of October 8, 2026, that report predates the scheduled presentation, and no authoritative post-presentation update or final decision is established. The schedule should not be mistaken for confirmation that a hearing occurred or that the court ruled.
GamesRadar also summarized analyst Florian Mueller’s view that the claims had narrowed and potential damages might be limited. That is attributed expert analysis, not a court finding or an established limit on any award.
