The latest U.S. Navy schedule pushes USS Enterprise (CVN-80) to March 2031 and USS Doris Miller (CVN-81) to February 2034. The Navy cites launch-critical construction delays for Enterprise and construction-footprint constraints for Doris Miller. USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79), meanwhile, completed acceptance trials in August 2026 and is projected for delivery in spring 2027. These are planned dates, not guarantees, and delivery is not the same as combat readiness.
Latest delivery outlook for the three Ford-class carriers
| Carrier | Latest date supported | What the date represents | Status or stated driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) | Spring 2027 | Navy delivery outlook in an August 17, 2026 release; an earlier budget schedule used March 2027. | Acceptance trials completed August 15, 2026. The Navy reported the ship 98% complete, with advanced weapons elevator work and further testing remaining. U.S. Navy, August 17, 2026 |
| USS Enterprise (CVN-80) | March 2031 | Navy FY2027 shipbuilding schedule, revised from July 2030. | The Navy cites delay in critical-path construction needed for launch; HII cited late-arriving, sequence-critical equipment. USNI News, May 8, 2026, updated May 23 |
| USS Doris Miller (CVN-81) | February 2034 | Navy FY2027 shipbuilding schedule, revised from February 2032. | The Navy cites construction-footprint constraints limiting module construction, with reported knock-on effects from Enterprise. USNI News, May 8, 2026, updated May 23 |
The estimates are not equivalent to completed milestones: Kennedy has completed a defined test phase, while Enterprise and Doris Miller have future budget-schedule dates. All three dates remain projections.
Why USS Enterprise is delayed
The FY2027 Navy shipbuilding book moved Enterprise’s planned delivery from July 2030 to March 2031. Its explanation was “delay in critical path construction required for launch of the ship,” as reported by USNI News.
Newport News Shipbuilding spokesperson Todd Corillo attributed the disruption to “late arrival of large, sequence-critical equipment that hindered the initial structural build of the ship in the dry dock.” HII said the delayed material had arrived by the May 2026 reporting. That addresses the arrival of that equipment, but does not establish that all remaining schedule risk has been eliminated. Military Times, May 15, 2026

Why Doris Miller’s schedule moved by two years
The Navy shifted Doris Miller from February 2032 to February 2034. Its shipbuilding-book explanation, quoted by USNI News, says: “The CVN-81 delivery date shifted from February 2032 to February 2034 due to shipbuilder construction footprint constraints limiting their ability to build CVN-81 ship modules.”
Military Times reported that a Navy official described the primary issue as insufficient space for large assemblies, with Enterprise’s use of final-assembly capacity contributing to the constraint. HII also described capacity limits affecting CVN-81’s initial structural build. These are attributed explanations; they do not show that a single factor accounts for every aspect of the revised schedule.

What changed for USS John F. Kennedy
Kennedy’s earlier delay history involved Advanced Arresting Gear certification and continued work on its Advanced Weapons Elevators, according to Navy schedule explanations reported by Military Times. The more recent official status is substantially further along: the Navy said the carrier completed acceptance trials on August 15, 2026, was 98% complete, and was expected to be delivered in spring 2027. Four advanced weapons elevators remained under contractor work as the Navy prepared preliminary acceptance and further testing. U.S. Navy, August 17, 2026
Delivery does not mean combat-ready
Delivery is a milestone on the path to operational use, not proof that a carrier is fully ready for combat. The Navy described further testing of unique systems after preliminary acceptance and said Kennedy’s projected delivery was intended to put the ship on the fastest path to combat readiness. Keep the stages distinct: acceptance trials, delivery to the Navy, follow-on testing and certification, and eventual combat readiness.

How these delays fit the wider shipbuilding picture
The Government Accountability Office has found recurring delays and cost growth across Navy shipbuilding, along with shipyard infrastructure and space limitations, challenges replacing skilled workers, and acquisition-process weaknesses. It summarized its broader findings this way: “Over this period, GAO has found that the Navy’s shipbuilding acquisition practices consistently resulted in cost growth, delivery delays, and ships that do not perform as expected.” Those portfolio-wide findings provide context, but do not independently establish the cause of any one Ford-class carrier’s delay. GAO, March 11, 2025
For scale, Navy testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee in 2025 put Enterprise at 44% construction complete and Doris Miller at 20% at that time. Those are historical testimony figures, not current completion estimates. U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services / GovInfo, 2025
