Gold is not motionless: it fell 8.5% in September 2026, ending the month at US$4,176 per ounce, according to the World Gold Council (WGC). The decline reflects competing forces: higher US Treasury yields and a stronger dollar pressured prices, while gold ETFs still attracted money. That is the latest dated market picture available here—not a live quote for 12 October or a forecast of what happens next.
Was gold really stuck in September?
No. The WGC’s review, published 7 October 2026, reports that gold fell 8.5% in US dollars during September and ended the month at US$4,176 per ounce. Its reported US-dollar return through 30 September was down 4.4% year to date. Those dates matter: these figures describe September, not the price on 12 October.

Gold’s reported September return also varied by currency and measurement unit. That does not mean the metal had a different underlying performance in each market; exchange rates and the stated unit affect the comparison.

So “stuck” may describe a confusing market narrative rather than a flat price. Gold can be discussed as a safe haven while falling when other forces—especially yields, currency movements, and investor positioning—are stronger in the near term.

What pressured gold in September?
Rising Treasury yields raised the opportunity cost
Gold does not pay interest. When yields on interest-bearing assets rise, some investors may find those alternatives more attractive, which can restrain demand for gold. In September, the US 10-year Treasury yield rose 53 basis points to 5.3%, a move the WGC identifies as a major headwind alongside the stronger dollar.
This is a relationship, not a rule that every rate increase must push gold down. The WGC cautions that an interest-rate hike is not automatically negative for gold; the broader setting and investors’ expectations also matter.

The US dollar strengthened
The dollar index (DXY) rose 2% in September as gold weakened. Because gold is commonly priced in US dollars, a stronger dollar can weigh on its dollar price and make gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies. Currency movements help explain why the reported returns differed across the WGC’s currency measures.
Futures positioning contracted even as ETF demand grew
Gold investment does not move through one channel. Global gold ETFs received US$10 billion, equivalent to 67 tonnes, in September. At the same time, COMEX managed-money positions fell by US$12 billion, or 84 tonnes, and total spreading positions fell by US$22 billion, or 156 tonnes. The WGC says futures liquidation likely contributed to the monthly decline.

These figures measure different activity: ETF inflows indicate money entering funds, while COMEX positioning reflects futures-market holdings. They can point in opposite directions in the same month. In the WGC’s price-attribution framework, investment demand is the marginal driver of short-term gold returns, so a change in positioning can matter even when another investor group is buying.
Why demand can look strong and weak at once
“Gold demand” combines several distinct uses and routes to market. The WGC’s Q2 2026 figures show why one headline number cannot tell the whole story. The report was published on 30 July; these are quarterly figures, not October flow data.

| Q2 2026 category or measure | WGC-reported result | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Total gold demand | 1,269 tonnes, flat year over year | Aggregate demand across the categories counted by the WGC |
| Gold-backed ETFs | 45 tonnes of outflows | Fund flows during the quarter |
| Over-the-counter (OTC) demand | 327 tonnes | Demand through OTC activity |
| Official sector | 289 tonnes of net purchases | Net buying by central banks and other official institutions |
| Jewellery | Demand down 17% year over year | Jewellery demand, which can be constrained by high prices |
These categories should not be treated as interchangeable or as a simple explanation of the next price move. ETF outflows can coexist with OTC activity and official-sector purchases; jewellery volumes can decline even when spending value holds up. The WGC says high prices weigh on jewellery volumes, while continued central-bank buying and OTC investment contributed to total demand edging 2% higher across the first half of 2026.

Conflict can increase demand for safe-haven assets, but the market’s response depends on what investors think the conflict will do to the wider economy. If an energy shock pushes oil prices higher, investors may worry about inflation and expect interest rates to stay higher. Those rate expectations can work against gold even while geopolitical risk supports safe-haven interest.

The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), discussing the first half of 2026, described this tension in connection with the Iran conflict and oil prices. Its review reported a benchmark price of $5,501.70 per ounce on 29 January 2026 and a fall of nearly 27% through June. That is a historical comparison for the period LBMA covered, not a current quote.
What could change the balance?
In its 30 July 2026 outlook, the WGC identified a softer US dollar, weaker credit conditions, and deteriorating equity-market prospects as conditions that could improve gold’s relative appeal. It expected investment demand to be the main source of demand growth in the rest of 2026, with OTC activity and Asian investment playing a larger role. It also expected Western ETF flows to be episodic and sensitive to real yields, US monetary-policy expectations, and the dollar.
The same outlook expected central banks to remain net buyers, but at a lower level than in 2025, and supply to increase only gradually. These are conditional outlook statements made in July, not guarantees or a current consensus forecast. A change in yields, the dollar, investor positioning, or the balance of demand can alter the picture.
What this means if you are deciding how to invest
Recent price weakness alone does not establish whether gold is attractive for your financial goals. If you are considering exposure, first distinguish the kind of exposure you would own and how it works. The WGC data establish that bars and coins are one part of investment demand and ETFs are another; they do not establish comparative costs or recommend either route.
- Ownership and custody: Physical bullion means holding the metal directly or arranging custody. Fund shares represent an investment in a financial product, not personal possession of a coin or bar.
- Price tracking and costs: Retail premiums, fund fees, and the relationship between a product’s price and gold’s market price vary. The figures cited here do not compare products.
- Liquidity and resale: The process and price for selling depend on the product, provider, and market. Check the terms before committing money.
- Storage and insurance: Physical holdings may require secure storage and insurance; arrangements and costs differ.
- Local rules: Tax treatment and product protections depend on your jurisdiction and the specific investment.
Short-term movements such as September’s do not by themselves answer whether gold fits your portfolio. Any decision should account for your time horizon, need for liquidity, tolerance for price swings, and the rules where you live.
