Ford said it was leaving Indian passenger-vehicle manufacturing because its own business could not reach a sustainable path to long-term profitability—not because India had no viable car market. The distinction matters: India’s passenger-vehicle sales later climbed to 4.64 million in FY2025-26, years after Ford announced its restructuring.
Why did Ford exit India?
On September 9, 2021, Ford announced that it would cease manufacturing vehicles for sale in India. Its plan called for winding down vehicle assembly at Sanand by the fourth quarter of 2021 and vehicle and engine manufacturing in Chennai by the second quarter of 2022. These were timelines in the announcement, not independent confirmation of when each closure was completed.
Ford described a company-specific profitability and capacity problem. Ford Motor Company president and CEO Jim Farley said the company had accumulated more than $2 billion in operating losses over the preceding ten years and that demand for new vehicles had been much weaker than forecast. Ford India president and managing director Anurag Mehrotra said it had not found a sustainable path to long-term profitability that included in-country vehicle manufacturing. He cited accumulated losses, persistent industry overcapacity and a lack of expected growth in India’s car market as factors reinforcing the decision. Ford’s September 9, 2021 announcement sets out the company’s explanation.
That is Ford’s account of its business outlook, not proof that India lacked car buyers or that one factor alone caused the exit. The company said it had considered partnerships, platform sharing, contract manufacturing with other automakers and a possible plant sale. It did not say that every option had been completed or that a sale or partnership was finalized.

What happened to Ford’s other India operations and customer support?
The manufacturing decision was not presented as an overnight end to every Ford activity. Ford’s 2021 announcement said it would focus on Ford Business Solutions and retain other operations, while shifting dealer partners away from vehicle sales toward parts and service support. The company also said customer parts, service and warranty support would continue and that it would maintain parts depots in Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Sanand and Kolkata.
Those statements describe Ford’s commitment at the time of the announcement. They do not establish that a particular part, repair or warranty service is available today in every city or for every model. Owners should confirm current arrangements with Ford or a local authorized service provider before relying on them.

How large is India’s passenger-vehicle market?
India’s market was substantial when Ford announced its decision and grew further in the following years. SIAM’s figures distinguish domestic sales from production and exports; these measures should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Measure | FY2020-21 | FY2025-26 |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger vehicles produced | 3,062,280 | 5,539,115 |
| Domestic passenger-vehicle sales | 2,711,457 | 4,643,439 |
| Passenger-vehicle exports | 404,397 | 905,200 |

For FY2025-26, SIAM reported 4.64 million domestic passenger-vehicle sales, up 7.9% year on year, and 0.9 million exports, up 17.5%. Why can a large market still be difficult for an automaker?
Market-wide demand is not the same as a profitable business for one company
A large national sales total does not show whether a particular automaker’s models are selling at the volume it forecast, whether its plants can be used efficiently, or whether its costs and product strategy support sustainable returns. Ford’s stated case combined weaker-than-forecast demand for its new vehicles with accumulated losses and industry overcapacity. The company concluded that it could not make local vehicle manufacturing work profitably over the long term.

Domestic sales, production and exports answer different questions
Domestic sales measure vehicles sold in India; production counts vehicles made there; exports count vehicles shipped abroad. A manufacturer’s business can depend on how it balances those activities and uses its capacity. SIAM’s year-by-year figures make the distinctions visible, but aggregate industry totals do not explain the economics of Ford’s individual plants or models.
Exports are context, not a standalone explanation
An industry report published by Hyundai Motor India, drawing on SIAM and CRISIL MI&A, describes India’s passenger-vehicle market as primarily domestic-focused. It puts domestic sales at 85.4% of total sales in fiscal 2023 and exports at 14.6%, compared with an export share of 16.8% in fiscal 2019. The report discusses global market conditions and automaker priorities, and notes that foreign manufacturers including Ford, General Motors and Volkswagen increased export focus amid stagnating domestic sales in earlier years. It also says the exits of Ford and GM and COVID-19 affected later export volumes. This is industry context; it does not establish that export strategy alone explains Ford’s exit. Hyundai Motor India’s investor-published materials provide the report and its source context.

Can Ford owners still get parts and service in India?
Ford’s September 2021 announcement said it would continue parts, service and warranty support, including for existing customers, and named the EcoSport among models whose sales would cease after existing dealer inventories were sold. That historical commitment is useful context for owners, but it is not a guarantee of present-day availability. Check locally for the specific model, year, variant, part number and service or warranty coverage.
Has Ford returned to passenger-car sales or manufacturing in India?
The available official-source information does not settle whether Ford has resumed passenger-car sales or domestic passenger-vehicle manufacturing since its 2021 restructuring. Ford’s continuing corporate web presence and customer-facing materials do not, by themselves, confirm a return to either activity. A current, dated announcement from Ford or an authoritative government source would be needed to establish that status.
