No. Ford BlueCruise is not subscription-only in the United States: Ford currently lists monthly and annual subscriptions, plus a one-time purchase option available when you buy an eligible vehicle from a Ford dealer. The headline refers to a 2023 change that added subscriptions alongside a purchase-at-vehicle-sale option; it does not describe every current U.S. choice.
What the 2023 headline meant
Engadget’s August 14, 2023 headline said Ford’s advanced BlueCruise driver-assist features “will only be available as a subscription.” The article described Ford making it possible to activate the feature later through monthly or annual subscriptions, while also retaining the option to buy it when purchasing a vehicle. In other words, the headline captured the new subscription route, but its wording can sound broader than the options described in the article.
Engadget reported Ford’s offer at the time as $75 per month, $800 per year, or $2,100 for three years. Those are historical 2023 figures, not Ford’s currently listed U.S. prices.

Which payment option makes sense?
The useful comparison is how long you expect to use BlueCruise, whether you can buy it with the vehicle, and whether you prefer a recurring cost or a larger upfront payment. At the listed U.S. prices, two years of monthly payments total $1,199.76, while two annual payments total $990; both are below the $2,495 one-time price. The one-time price is therefore not automatically the cheapest route, even for someone who expects to keep using the feature for several years. Prices could change, and the one-time option has a purchase-time restriction.

Ford describes BlueCruise as hands-free highway driving on designated Blue Zones, working with Adaptive Cruise Control. Hands-free operation does not mean the driver can stop paying attention. Ford states: “BlueCruise is not full self-driving technology. Drivers must keep their eyes on the road and be ready to take control of the wheel.”
