Ford and Renault Group have signed an agreement to develop two Ford-branded electric passenger cars for Europe. The first is expected in showrooms in early 2028. Ford will design the cars, Renault Group will develop them with Ford and build them in northern France, using Renault Group’s Ampere platform. The announcement does not call them cheaper EVs and gives no prices.
What did Ford and Renault announce?
On December 9, 2025, the companies announced a strategic cooperation covering development of two distinct Ford-branded electric passenger cars for European customers. It is not a merger or takeover, and no named Renault model has been identified as a donor vehicle. The companies’ release describes Ampere as the platform, but does not specify a particular Renault vehicle or architecture. Renault Group’s announcement sets out the passenger-car agreement.
Who designs, develops and builds the cars?
Ford will design the vehicles. Their development will be carried out with Renault Group, which will manufacture them at its ElectriCity operation in northern France. The arrangement combines Ford’s role in product design with Renault Group’s platform and manufacturing capacity; it does not mean the cars are simply rebadged Renaults.
When will the Ford EVs be available?
The first vehicle is expected in showrooms in early 2028. That is an expectation, not a guaranteed on-sale or delivery date. The announcement gives no timing for the second car.

What will the cars cost, and what specifications are known?
The announcement does not say the vehicles will be cheaper, nor does it provide prices or a price target. It also does not name the models or specify body styles, battery capacity, driving range, charging speed, production volume or warranty. Those details are not yet established by the announcement, so buyers cannot use it to compare affordability or running costs.
Are Ford and Renault also making electric vans together?
Not as a confirmed production program. The companies signed a letter of intent to explore joint development and manufacture of selected Ford- and Renault-branded light commercial vehicles in Europe. That is an exploratory step, distinct from the signed agreement for the two passenger cars.

What does the partnership mean for buyers?
The companies say they want to combine Renault Group’s Ampere platform, EV manufacturing ecosystem and industrial capacity with Ford’s design and driving-dynamics expertise to compete more effectively in Europe. Ford CEO Jim Farley described the goal as vehicles that are “fun, capable, and distinctly Ford in spirit”; those are company intentions, not independently verified performance findings.
Renault Group reported 2.265 million vehicles sold in 2024, according to the company description accompanying the announcement. That figure provides corporate context, not a forecast of how many vehicles this cooperation will produce or how much it may save.
