Ford Replaces Oakville’s EV Production Plan With Super Duty Trucks

Ford changed Oakville’s production plan from next-generation EVs to F-Series Super Duty trucks. The shift reflects Ford’s demand rationale and Unifor’s concerns about delays and workforce disruption.

Ford replaced its planned battery-electric vehicle production at the Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario with F-Series Super Duty truck assembly. The company announced in July 2024 that production was scheduled to start in 2026. That is a change to Oakville’s plan—not an announcement that Ford has scrapped all of its electric-vehicle plans.

What is Ford building at Oakville?

Ford’s July 18, 2024 announcement said Oakville would assemble F-Series Super Duty pickups, replacing the site’s previous battery-electric vehicle (BEV) production plan. Ford said production would begin in 2026. Its current global plant listing identifies F-250–F-450 Super Duty trucks as Oakville products, but the listing does not provide actual production volumes.

Ford described the expansion as having initial capacity for 100,000 Super Duty trucks. A Government of Canada project record describes the refurbished facility as capable of producing up to 100,000 units annually and notes an onsite stamping facility. Both figures describe capacity, not proof that Oakville is currently producing that many trucks.

Why did Ford change the plan?

Ford’s explanation: demand for Super Duty

Ford said the added Oakville capacity would help meet demand for Super Duty trucks and support Ford Pro, its commercial-vehicle business. CEO Jim Farley said in the July 2024 announcement: “Super Duty is a vital tool for businesses and people around the world and, even with our Kentucky Truck Plant and Ohio Assembly Plant running flat out, we can’t meet the demand.” That is Ford’s stated business rationale, not an independently established measure of demand.

Unifor’s explanation: reducing disruption for Oakville workers

Unifor, which represents workers at the plant, described the change as addressing concerns about the delay to Oakville’s next vehicle launch and its effects on the workforce. National President Lana Payne said the delay was “too long, too disruptive, and too harmful to accept.” The union’s statement explains its position; it does not by itself establish the eventual effect on jobs or working conditions.

Will Oakville build an electric Super Duty?

Ford and Unifor described electrified Super Duty versions as a future plan later in the decade. The available announcements do not establish a final launch date, vehicle configuration, or how much of Oakville’s production would be electrified. Treat the plan as a stated future intention, not a confirmed product schedule.
