Why Ford Dropped Its Sedans—and What the CEO Has Said About a Return

Ford says it dropped the Fusion and Focus because it could not compete on sedan costs. CEO Jim Farley has floated an electric sedan, but no model is confirmed.

Ford CEO Jim Farley said the company stopped selling sedans in the U.S. because it could not build them at a cost that would let it compete profitably with rivals such as the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. He has since floated the idea of an affordable electric performance sedan, but Ford has not announced a production model or a return date.

Why Ford stopped selling the Fusion and Focus

Farley’s explanation is economic: Ford did not have a competitive cost base for sedans. He said reviving the Fusion or Focus would mean losing money against the Corolla or Civic, and that Ford needed to reduce platform costs before it could compete. In an April 29, 2026 report on his appearance on Ford’s Rapid Response podcast, Ford Authority reported Farley’s estimate that the gap could amount to $4,000 per vehicle. That is Farley’s stated comparison, not an independently audited model-level calculation. Ford Authority’s report quotes him saying Ford had not introduced U.S. sedans because it lacked “a competitive cost base.”

Ford directed investment elsewhere

Ford Blue and Model e president Andrew Frick said the company put investment into products where it believed it could compete more strongly, including Bronco, Maverick, Bronco Sport and Tremor. Asked whether discontinuing Ford’s North American sedan lineup was the right decision, Frick replied, “I absolutely do.” Ford Authority reported his comments on June 3, 2026.

How much of the market do sedans represent?

Frick said sedans had declined from 50% of the market to 16–17%, according to Car and Driver’s June 6, 2026 account of his interview with Automotive News. The quoted account does not state the years for either figure, so they describe Frick’s comparison rather than a dated, independently specified market-share series. Frick also noted that some customers still buy sedans. Car and Driver’s report quotes him saying, “There is a percentage of the customer base that still buys sedans.”

What Farley has hinted about a possible sedan

Farley has raised the possibility of an affordable, high-performance, rear-wheel-drive electric sedan. He also described the sedan shape as aerodynamically clean. Those comments indicate interest in a concept, not approval of a vehicle program. Autoblog’s account of his interview with Forrest’s Auto Reviews, filmed during Monterey Car Week, explicitly cautions that his remarks do not confirm a car is in development. Read Autoblog’s report.

A Mustang-family sedan is speculation

Frick has said that any new sedan would need to fit Ford’s portfolio and might make sense as part of an existing product family. That has prompted speculation about a four-door Mustang, but Ford has not announced one. The Mustang connection is an inference from comments about the product family, not a confirmed name or plan. Car and Driver covers the speculation, and The Drive provides additional context.

What Ford would need to make a return work

Farley and Frick’s remarks point to practical hurdles rather than a ready-to-buy product. A future sedan would need to meet several conditions:

  • Competitive costs: Ford would need to lower platform costs enough to compete with established sedan rivals.
  • A viable business case: The vehicle would need to avoid the per-car losses Farley cited as a reason not to revive the Fusion or Focus.
  • A clear place in the lineup: It would need to fit Ford’s existing portfolio or a product family, as Frick has said.

These are conditions implied by the executives’ explanations, not specifications for an approved model.

What is—and is not—confirmed

Ford has not confirmed that it will produce another sedan. The company has not announced a model name, powertrain, launch timing or price. The most concrete public signal is Farley’s exploratory discussion of an affordable electric performance sedan; until Ford announces a program, a Fusion, Focus or four-door Mustang return remains uncertain.
