FedEx pilots reportedly arrived at some destinations without confirmed hotel rooms after the MD-11 grounding triggered extensive flight changes during the 2025 peak shipping season. The reported problem was a crew-travel booking backlog—not evidence that pilots had made their own reservations incorrectly. The grounding began in November 2025; by May 2026, the FAA had approved Boeing’s repair plan and FedEx had resumed MD-11 package flights.
Why flight changes disrupted hotel bookings
FedEx and UPS grounded their MD-11 fleets in November 2025 after a fatal UPS crash in Louisville. The resulting inspections and schedule changes affected crew itineraries as well as aircraft operations. A January 2, 2026 listing from aviation consultant Kit Darby, summarizing a FreightWaves report, said the volume of flight changes left crew-travel staff behind on hotel arrangements during the peak shipping period. It reported that pilots sometimes reached destinations after long trips without confirmed accommodations. The original FreightWaves page was not independently available, so the listing does not establish how many pilots or hotel nights were affected.
The FAA directive required inspections and correction of problems before affected aircraft could fly again. The FAA warned that “This condition could result in loss of continued safe flight and landing,” as quoted by the Associated Press in its November 8, 2025 report. At the time, MD-11s represented about 4% of FedEx’s fleet and about 9% of UPS’s fleet, according to figures AP attributed to the companies.
How crew travel bookings can become difficult to change
A December 2024 FedEx ALPA trip-services transcript describes two parts of the process: Crew Travel Services handles advance planning for hotels, ground transportation and catering, while the Flight Services Desk handles services for pairings day to day. The transcript says last-minute changes can leave contracted hotels or transport providers unavailable. That offers context for how sudden schedule revisions can complicate lodging, but it predates the grounding and does not independently establish the cause or scale of the reported backlog.

In practical terms, an original reservation may no longer fit a revised itinerary, while a contract property or transport provider may not have capacity when the change arrives. The available report does not say precisely how each affected reservation was handled, or whether alternative lodging was arranged in every case.
What a crew member can do about an unsafe or substandard hotel
In the December 2024 transcript, FedEx ALPA speakers advised crew members who encounter an unsafe or substandard hotel to contact the Flight Services Desk and duty officer to request a different hotel, then submit an Insite report so the property can be considered for removal from future use. This is process guidance from that transcript, not confirmation that it captures every current policy or escalation route.

Did FedEx’s MD-11 fleet return to service?
Yes. The Associated Press reported on May 11, 2026, that the FAA had approved Boeing’s proposed repair plan after review and FedEx had resumed MD-11 package flights. FedEx said it worked with Boeing, the FAA and its own experts to inspect and repair aircraft. AP reported that FedEx owned 46 MD-11s, though more than two dozen had already been stored before the crash. The May report establishes a return to service at that time; it does not, by itself, confirm later fleet developments.

FedEx’s FY2026 annual report attributes operational disruption and adverse financial effects to the grounding. The source material does not give a specific cost for hotel rebookings, nor a published count of affected pilots or hotel nights. The documented financial impact is therefore broader than the accommodation issue, and a hotel-rebooking total should not be inferred from it.
