Cathay Pacific’s fuel surcharge is not still at the March 2026 “doubled” level: the airline changed rates again in August, and its 29 September update added a separate adjustment for journeys starting in the Philippines from 1 October. For Cathay-operated flights in the Hong Kong-origin schedule, the long-haul surcharge is HK$1,362 per flight sector from 1 August 2026; the charge varies by route group, origin and currency.
What is Cathay Pacific’s current fuel surcharge?
Cathay’s official schedule lists these per-sector amounts for Cathay-operated flights, comparing the schedule through 31 July with the schedule from 1 August 2026. These Hong Kong-origin figures are not universal: the applicable amount depends on the journey’s origin and route grouping.

Cathay Pacific’s official fuel-surcharge page presents separate origin-specific rules and distinguishes joint operating and codeshare flights. Do not apply this Hong Kong table to every itinerary or assume the same charge for a partner-operated segment.
When did the increase take effect?
The headline about doubled fees refers to Cathay’s March 2026 increase, effective 18 March. CNA reported the Hong Kong-dollar short-haul surcharge rising from HK$142 to HK$290, medium-haul from HK$264 to HK$541, and long-haul from HK$569 to HK$1,164. Those are March comparisons, not the schedule now shown for Hong Kong-origin flights.

After making several reductions as jet-fuel prices fell from May, Cathay announced another increase effective 1 August amid renewed Middle East tensions. Its official table shows the Hong Kong-origin long-haul grouping rising from HK$965 to HK$1,362 per sector. RTHK described the increase as up to 41%; that is approximately the change from HK$965 to HK$1,362 for that grouping, not a uniform increase on every ticket.
On 29 September, Cathay’s page announced a further change for journeys originating in the Philippines from 1 October. The notice says this change does not apply to journeys originating in Hong Kong or other cities, whose surcharges remain unchanged by that update. The page available here does not state the Philippines amounts.

Why did Cathay raise the surcharge?
Cathay linked its March decision to jet-fuel prices that had approximately doubled amid the war on Iran, according to CNA’s 12 March report. In its July notice, the airline cited a later increase in jet-fuel prices amid escalating Middle East tensions. Cathay also said it had reduced surcharges multiple times since May as fuel prices fell, and that it reviews and revises the charges every two weeks. The surcharge schedule can therefore change; an earlier announcement is not a reliable guide to a later ticket quote.

How the charge affects your ticket
It is charged per flight sector
The surcharge is assessed for each flight sector, not once for an entire journey. A connecting trip with more than one sector may therefore include more than one surcharge. The total depends on the applicable origin and route grouping for the itinerary.
It applies regardless of fare type
Cathay says the surcharge applies irrespective of fare type. That means an award fare is not exempt from the surcharge, but the official schedule does not provide the cash total for a particular award itinerary.

Direct-channel fares include it
Cathay says fares displayed through its direct channels include the fuel surcharge. It is one fare component, not an additional amount to add again to a quoted direct-channel total. A surcharge change also does not translate into the same increase in every ticket’s total price because the fare has other components.

For a Cathay-operated Hong Kong-origin flight to the United States, the route falls in the Hong Kong long-haul grouping that includes North America: HK$1,362 per flight sector from 1 August 2026. That figure is not the full ticket cost. A precise itinerary total depends on the number of sectors, the journey’s first origin, the operating carrier or codeshare arrangement, ticket timing and currency. Check Cathay’s current fare quote for the actual itinerary, particularly when the trip begins outside Hong Kong or includes partner-operated flights.
