FedEx began returning its MD-11 aircraft to commercial service in May 2026, after the FAA approved Boeing-developed inspection and return-to-service protocols. The fleet had been grounded since November 8, 2025, under an emergency FAA directive requiring inspections and any necessary corrective work. The return was not simply the result of “quick inspections,” and available reporting does not establish how many FedEx MD-11s were flying on October 8, 2026.
When did FedEx’s MD-11 fleet return?
FedEx says it began systematically returning its MD-11 fleet to active commercial service in May 2026, after the FAA approved inspection and return-to-service protocols developed by Boeing. The Associated Press reported on May 11 that FedEx had resumed flying the aircraft the previous day, May 10.
The timing supersedes earlier expectations that the fleet would return soon after inspections. A return process beginning in May does not mean every MD-11 was back in operation at once. Neither FedEx’s fiscal 2026 annual report nor the AP report establishes a tail-by-tail operating count for October 8, 2026.
Why were FedEx’s MD-11s grounded?
On November 8, 2025, the FAA issued an emergency Airworthiness Directive prohibiting operators from flying covered MD-11 and MD-11F aircraft until they completed required inspections and any necessary corrective actions. The FAA said the directive applied to approximately 109 U.S.-registered aircraft.

The Federal Register’s rulemaking discussion describes the safety concern as wiring damage in an engine pylon that could create a risk of uncommanded thrust-reverser deployment. Required work included inspecting pylon wiring and testing wire integrity. The directive required corrective action where needed; an inspection alone was not a blanket finding that an aircraft was safe to fly.
What did the return-to-service process involve?
The FAA approved Boeing-developed inspection and return-to-service protocols in 2026. FedEx’s annual report says the company then began systematically returning its aircraft to service. The AP reported that FedEx worked with Boeing, the FAA and its own experts to inspect and repair its planes.

Those figures describe ownership and storage, not the number of aircraft actively flying after the return began. The available reporting does not provide a current operating count.

Does the return change FedEx’s retirement plan?
FedEx’s fiscal 2026 annual report says its fleet retirement plan was extended in 2025 through the end of 2032. The sources documenting the May 2026 return do not say that the return changed that plan.
