Danish interest rose sharply in January 2026 amid diplomatic tensions over Greenland, but the app is a shopping aid, not a guarantee of a product’s complete supply-chain or ownership history, and its use has not been shown to produce measurable economic effects.
What UdenUSA does when you scan a product
The App Store description says users can scan packaging to see information about a product’s origin, whether its associated company is American, and possible alternatives. TechCrunch described an iPhone barcode-scanning workflow that could also suggest Danish alternatives. The English-language App Store listing names the app NonUSA and identifies Vocata Studio as its developer: App Store listing.
The developer presents the project as a way to help consumers identify American products and decide whether to avoid them, while supporting local producers and European and Danish self-sufficiency. That describes the app’s purpose, not independent verification of its classifications: UdenUSA website.
Why the app drew attention in Denmark
TechCrunch and the Associated Press linked renewed interest in boycott apps to diplomatic tensions after U.S. President Donald Trump made statements about acquiring Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark. Their coverage describes shoppers looking for practical ways to identify American goods, while also showing that consumers had different views and reasons. The reporting establishes a contemporaneous connection, not a single motive shared by all users.

What the early-2026 adoption figures show
The reported numbers are dated snapshots, not current totals or live rankings. TechCrunch reported on January 21, 2026, citing Appfigures, that NonUSA rose from No. 441 in Denmark’s App Store on January 9 to No. 6 on January 20 and No. 1 on January 21. The same report said average daily downloads for NonUSA on iOS and Made O’Meter on iOS and Google Play rose 867% over the seven days before January 21 compared with the preceding week. TechCrunch also noted that Denmark’s App Store is a small market, where a few thousand downloads in a day could be enough to top the chart: TechCrunch’s January 21 report.
In a February 8, 2026, report, the Associated Press said NonUSA had passed 100,000 downloads by the beginning of February. The app’s creator told AP that around 46,000 users were in Denmark and around 10,000 in Germany. Those figures reflect the reporting dates and the creator’s account; they should not be treated as current usage counts: Associated Press report.

How to interpret product-origin labels
“Origin” can mean different things: where an item was manufactured, where its brand is based, or where the company behind it is headquartered or owned. Those are not interchangeable. The app listing says it reports product origin and company association, but it does not provide a comprehensive method for resolving every complex supply chain or corporate-ownership case. It also warns that the app does not work perfectly. Treat a scan as a starting point for your own decision, not proof that every aspect of a product is American or non-American.

AP quoted Christina Gravert, an associate professor of economics at the University of Copenhagen, estimating that U.S. products make up “around 1 to 3%” of products on Danish grocery shelves. This is an attributed estimate about grocery products; AP did not provide an underlying study or dataset, and the figure does not measure U.S. influence across all consumer spending. Gravert also pointed to widespread reliance on American technology such as Apple iPhones and Microsoft Office, and said that organized effort may be needed for meaningful change. These are expert observations, not measured findings about UdenUSA’s economic impact.

One of the app’s creators, Jonas Pipper, told AP that some users said they felt “a little bit of the pressure was lifted off them,” describing a reported sense of agency. That speaks to how some users experienced the app; it does not establish that individual scans or purchases changed company behavior or trade flows.
