Why CNET Was Reportedly Hard to Sell—and What Happened Next

In January 2024, reports said Red Ventures was struggling to find a buyer for CNET, with the site’s AI-generated articles among the reputational concerns prospective buyers raised. That was not proof the controversy alone blocked a deal or reduced CNET’s price: declining traffic, a weaker advertising market and higher interest rates were also cited. Red Ventures later announced a sale of CNET to Ziff Davis, which Axios valued at over $100 million.

Why was CNET reportedly hard to sell?

Futurism reported on January 17, 2024, that Red Ventures was having trouble finding a buyer for CNET and that prospective buyers had raised reputational concerns tied in part to the site’s AI-written articles. Axios’s January 16 report said Red Ventures had approached strategic buyers and was seeking at least half of the $500 million it had paid for CNET and smaller properties in 2020. The $500 million figure was for a bundle, not CNET alone; the later target was for CNET by itself.

The reported difficulty had more than one possible explanation. Contemporaneous coverage also cited declining traffic, a slower advertising market and rising interest rates. The reports do not isolate the AI controversy’s effect on valuation or establish that it alone prevented a sale. Axios reported that Red Ventures was trying to improve earnings while its informal sale process continued.

What happened with CNET’s AI-written articles?

In January 2023, CNET published AI-generated financial explainers under the byline “CNET Money Staff.” Futurism reported that readers had to interact with the byline to see the automation disclosure, prompting criticism that it was not prominent enough. CNET’s then-editor-in-chief, Connie Guglielmo, described the effort as “testing a new technology so we can separate the hype from reality,” as quoted by Futurism.

Engadget reported that CNET paused AI-written stories that month amid concerns about errors and disclosure. CNET said it was reviewing stories after identifying serious mistakes. WIRED later reported that 41 of the 77 bot-written stories had received corrections and that more than half contained factual errors; the same reporting raised plagiarism concerns. Those figures are WIRED’s reported tally, not an independently re-audited count here. AIAAIC’s incident record also summarizes the correction and plagiarism coverage.

Did CNET sell after the AI controversy?

Yes, Red Ventures announced a sale of CNET to Ziff Davis in August 2024. Axios reported that the transaction was valued at over $100 million, while noting the exact price was not immediately known. In its later report, Axios also said sources approached in the earlier process had considered a roughly $250 million valuation too high. That earlier figure was a reported target, not a confirmed offer or final sale price.

The announcement shows the 2024 sale effort eventually produced a reported transaction, but the available coverage does not establish whether the sale had closed as of September 28, 2026. It also does not show how much, if any, the AI episode changed the final valuation.

How to read the reported sale figures

Figure What it describes Qualification
$500 million Red Ventures’ 2020 purchase of CNET and smaller websites Bundled acquisition amount reported by Axios in 2024; not a CNET-only price.
At least half of $500 million Red Ventures’ reported target for CNET alone during the January 2024 sale exploration Axios reporting; a target, not a confirmed offer or sale price.
Roughly $250 million Valuation sought in the earlier effort, as described in Axios’s August 2024 report Sources approached reportedly considered it too high; it was not a confirmed final price.
Over $100 million Reported value of the later Red Ventures–Ziff Davis CNET transaction Axios reported the value in August 2024 and said the exact price was not immediately known.

These figures refer to different scopes and stages: a bundled 2020 acquisition, an asking target for CNET alone, and a later reported transaction valuation. They should not be treated as like-for-like confirmed prices.
