Re:

Logitech’s “Forever Mouse” Was a Concept, Not a Netflix-Style Subscription Product

No Logitech mouse currently requires a Netflix-style subscription to use. In a July 2024 interview, CEO Hanneke Faber entertained the idea of a durable “forever mouse” with software updates and a possible subscription model. Logitech later said it was not an actual or planned product, and Faber reiterated in October 2025 that it was not an actual plan.

What did Logitech’s CEO say about a subscription mouse?

In a July 2024 interview on The Verge’s Decoder, host Nilay Patel asked Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber, “Can you envision a subscription mouse?” She replied, “Possibly.” Patel then framed the idea as a “forever mouse” for which customers might pay a subscription for software updates. Faber agreed with that framing and described the appeal as users never having to worry about the device again. She compared the thinking with Logitech’s video-conferencing services, while agreeing with Patel that a mouse is different.

The exchange was an interview discussion about a possible business idea, not an announcement. It did not identify a product, subscription price, billing interval, launch date, eligible customers or specific software features. Read the Decoder interview transcript at The Verge.

Did Logitech plan to launch the “forever mouse”?

Not according to Logitech’s later clarification, as quoted by The Verge: the mouse was “not an actual or planned product” but a look at “provocative internal thinking on future possibilities for more sustainable consumer electronics.” That characterization draws a clear line between exploring an idea and offering a product customers can buy. Logitech M510 Full Size Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse
  • Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
  • You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.

In an October 2025 interview with Fast Company, Faber addressed the earlier coverage directly: “I never used the word subscription. And it’s not an actual plan.” She said she likes designers to think big and added that she should probably “keep my mouth shut when talking about these ideas.” Her later account and Logitech’s earlier clarification both support treating the mouse as exploratory, not as a pending launch. What would a subscription mouse mean for your budget?

The interview established only a hypothetical combination: longer-lasting mouse hardware and software updates, potentially supported by a subscription. It did not establish whether a fee would buy new features, maintenance, repair, replacement or access to an online service. Those distinctions would determine whether recurring payments offered value or simply added a continuing cost to an accessory that otherwise might be purchased once.

Logitech M185 Compact Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse - Swift Grey
  • Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad
  • Durable and Reliable: This USB wireless mouse features a line-by-line scroll wheel, up to 1 year of battery life (2) thanks to a smart sleep mode function, and comes with the included AA battery
  • Universal Compatibility: Your Logitech mouse works with your Windows PC, Mac, or laptop, so no matter what type of computer you own today or buy tomorrow your mouse will be compatible
  • Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
  • Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)

If a real offer were announced, a buyer would need to compare the total recurring fees over the time they expect to keep the mouse with the one-time cost of ordinary hardware. They would also need to check what happens if payments stop, whether repairs or replacement are included, how long updates are promised, and whether essential functions rely on an online service. These are questions for evaluating any future terms—not features Logitech has announced for this concept.

Is Logitech’s $26 figure a verified average?

In the Decoder interview, Faber said global average spending on mice and keyboards was “$26.” The available interview material does not establish the underlying dataset, what “average spend” means, the period measured or how the figure was calculated. It should therefore be treated as a figure Faber cited in conversation, not as an independently verified market statistic or a basis for estimating the cost of a future subscription.

Can you buy a Logitech mouse with this subscription?

No product or subscription described in the interview is established as available for purchase. Logitech sells conventional mice, but the available reporting does not identify any of them as the proposed “forever mouse” or as requiring a subscription. A buyer considering an ordinary mouse should assess its listed price and terms as a standard hardware purchase, rather than assume the hypothetical subscription model applies.
