Cisco eliminated Maria Martinez’s chief operating officer role in February 2024 as part of an executive leadership realignment. Her employment ended on May 15, 2024. Although the announcement came amid layoff reporting and the pending Splunk acquisition, Cisco’s filing cited organizational alignment—not layoffs—as the reason for eliminating the role.

What happened to Maria Martinez at Cisco?

Cisco told Martinez on February 16, 2024, that her COO position had been eliminated. In its Q2 FY2024 Form 10-Q, the company said it was aligning Operations and Customer Experience directly to the CEO and eliminating the COO role. The filing describes a change in Cisco’s leadership structure, not a claim that Martinez was dismissed for performance reasons.

Martinez remained employed during a transition period. Her separation agreement, included in Cisco’s 2024 proxy materials, lists May 15, 2024, as her employment termination date.

Did layoffs cause her departure?

The available official explanation does not establish that layoffs caused Martinez’s role to be eliminated. Cisco’s filing attributes the change to its decision to align Operations and Customer Experience directly with the CEO.

Contemporaneous coverage from CRN discussed the leadership announcement alongside Cisco’s companywide layoff notice and its pending Splunk acquisition. That was the context around the news, but it does not override Cisco’s stated organizational rationale. The timing alone is not evidence of a direct link between the layoffs and Martinez’s departure.

How the 2024 departure differs from Cisco’s later workforce actions

Events announced in 2026 are separate from Martinez’s 2024 exit. Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins announced a planned workforce reduction on May 13, 2026. Cisco described it as fewer than 4,000 jobs, or less than 5 percent of its total employee base; these were estimates for a planned reduction, not a final count of completed job losses. Robbins said most employee notifications would begin May 14 and continue globally in accordance with local laws and regulations. The announcement also described support for affected employees, including placement services and access to Cisco U courses. Cisco reported that 75 percent of placement-services participants found their next role; that is a company-reported program outcome, not an independent evaluation. See Robbins’s May 2026 announcement and its placement-services details.

Cisco’s fiscal 2026 restructuring disclosures provide further, later context, but do not change the explanation for Martinez’s 2024 departure. In its FY2026 Form 10-K, Cisco reported $511 million in fiscal 2026 restructuring charges and estimated up to $1 billion in total pretax charges under the plan, with substantial completion expected by the end of fiscal 2027. Cisco said the plan supports investment in growth areas including silicon, optics, security, and AI. The same filing reported approximately 82,400 employees as of July 25, 2026.
