Re:

Who Makes Chips for Apple? Inside Apple’s Semiconductor Supply Chain

Apple designs its custom silicon and relies on outside suppliers to fabricate and support it. Here is what TSMC and Apple’s other named partners do—and what public disclosures do not reveal.

Apple designs its custom silicon, but specialist suppliers manufacture and support the chips used in its products. TSMC is the clearest named maker of advanced Apple silicon in Apple’s recent announcements, including at TSMC’s Arizona facility. Other named partners contribute different components or supply-chain stages, from wireless and power-management chips to wafer materials, manufacturing equipment, packaging, and testing. Apple’s public disclosures do not identify the supplier and factory for every chip model.

Who manufactures Apple chips?

Apple is the engineering lead for its custom silicon, while outside companies carry out manufacturing and other supply-chain work. Apple says its engineers work with suppliers on silicon; it does not say that Apple owns or operates all the factories involved. Its 2025 Form 10-K also describes reliance on outside suppliers and warns that single- or limited-source components, shortages, production ramps, and supplier constraints can affect product availability. Apple’s supplier announcement and its February 2026 update identify selected partners and projects, not a complete map of production for every Apple chip.

That distinction matters: “who makes Apple chips?” can refer to the company that designs a chip, fabricates its wafer, supplies a component, or packages and tests it. Those are separate jobs, and the companies named by Apple are not all competing to manufacture the iPhone’s main processor.

What each named supplier contributes

Company Contribution Apple identifies Location or status in Apple’s announcements
TSMC Fabricates advanced Apple silicon. Apple identifies TSMC’s Arizona facility as producing advanced chips for Apple. The announcement does not establish that all Apple silicon is made there.
Texas Instruments Named in U.S. manufacturing collaborations for chips; Apple also says GlobalWafers’ U.S.-made wafers are intended for partners including TI. Apple names Texas Instruments facilities in its U.S. manufacturing update; the cited announcement does not assign each Apple chip model to a TI site.
Samsung Named in U.S. manufacturing collaborations. Apple’s cited announcement does not specify that Samsung makes Apple’s main processors. Apple identifies Samsung facilities in the United States as part of its collaborations, without a model-by-model production map.
GlobalFoundries Agreement covering wireless technologies and advanced power management; Apple also says it is working with GlobalFoundries and Broadcom on additional U.S. cellular semiconductor components for 5G products. Announced partnership and development/manufacturing work; not evidence that GlobalFoundries fabricates every Apple processor.
Broadcom Partner with GlobalFoundries on additional U.S. cellular semiconductor components for 5G products. Apple describes collaborative work, rather than a complete allocation of cellular chips by model or factory.
GlobalWafers America Produces advanced 300 mm silicon wafers, an input used by fabs. Apple says production is at Sherman, Texas, for U.S. fabs, with intended partners including TSMC and Texas Instruments.
Applied Materials Supports U.S. production of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Named as an equipment partner; it is not identified as a maker of Apple chips.
Amkor Planned packaging and testing of Apple silicon made at the nearby TSMC fab. Apple reported in February 2026 that Amkor had broken ground on its Arizona facility. It is an announced, in-progress project, not established high-volume production.

These roles span the supply chain. Wafer suppliers provide material for fabrication, equipment companies help build the tools used in fabs, foundries fabricate chips, and packaging-and-test providers handle later stages. A company can be important to Apple’s chip supply without making the central processor in an iPhone or Mac.

How an Apple chip moves through the supply chain

  1. Design and engineering: Apple develops its custom silicon and works with suppliers. The public evidence does not spell out design responsibility for every semiconductor inside Apple products.
  2. Wafer inputs: GlobalWafers America’s 300 mm wafers made in Sherman, Texas, are intended for U.S. fabs, including partners TSMC and Texas Instruments.
  3. Fabrication equipment: Applied Materials is among the partners Apple names for supporting U.S. semiconductor manufacturing equipment production.
  4. Wafer fabrication: TSMC’s Arizona facility is a specifically identified site producing advanced Apple silicon. Apple also names U.S. collaborations with Texas Instruments and Samsung, and a GlobalFoundries agreement focused on wireless technologies and advanced power management.
  5. Packaging and testing: Once a chip has been fabricated, it may require packaging and testing. Apple says Amkor’s planned Arizona facility is intended to perform those tasks for Apple silicon made at the nearby TSMC site.
  6. Other cellular components: Apple says it is working with Broadcom and GlobalFoundries to develop and manufacture additional U.S. cellular semiconductor components for 5G products.

Packaging is not wafer fabrication: the two are distinct stages. Apple’s Amkor announcement describes a planned downstream facility, while its TSMC announcement identifies an existing advanced-chip production site.

What Apple’s production figures do—and do not—show

  • 2025 outlook: In August 2025, Apple forecast more than 19 billion chips for Apple products in 2025 through its U.S. silicon supply chain. This was a forecast and covered chips broadly, not just Apple-designed advanced processors.
  • 2025 result reported in 2026: In February 2026, Apple said it had exceeded its prior target, sourcing more than 20 billion U.S.-made chips from 24 factories across 12 states during 2025. This includes partner output and should not be read as 20 billion Apple-designed systems-on-a-chip.
  • Arizona outlook: Apple said TSMC’s Arizona facility was expected to produce well over 100 million advanced chips in 2026. That is a forward-looking figure, not a verified year-end total.

These figures describe different scopes and time frames: a 2025 forecast, a 2025 total reported the following year, and a 2026 outlook for one facility. They are Apple’s own statements about its supply chain, not independent tallies of all chips worldwide.

Why the supplier list cannot answer every model-level question

Apple’s 2024 Supplier List covers suppliers based on direct spend for materials, manufacturing, and assembly; that edition reflects fiscal year 2023. It is a broad supplier disclosure, not a bill of materials linking each Apple chip model to a specific factory. Apple’s newer announcements add examples of U.S. partnerships, but still do not provide a comprehensive allocation of chip models, fab locations, and packaging sites.

As a result, the available public information does not establish that one company makes every Apple chip, that every advanced Apple processor comes from Arizona, or which exact site produces every chip generation. The most supportable concise answer is that Apple designs its custom silicon and depends on outside manufacturers—most clearly TSMC for advanced Apple silicon—alongside a wider network for other chip categories and production stages.

Why TSMC’s scale is relevant, but not an Apple allocation

TSMC reported that it represented 34% of the “Foundry 2.0” industry in 2024. Its definition of Foundry 2.0 includes logic wafer manufacturing, packaging, testing, mask-making, and related activities. That industry-wide measure signals TSMC’s scale; it is not Apple’s share of TSMC capacity or proof of how many Apple chips TSMC makes. TSMC’s annual reports provide the company’s definition and figure.
