First-round amounts depended on each approved claimant’s months with an activated Facebook account during the class period and the number of valid claims. CBS News reported an average first payment of $29.43; AARP reported an initial range of $4.89 to $38.36, based on court documents. Those are historical reference points, not estimates or guarantees for any individual.
How the Facebook settlement payment was calculated
The $725 million settlement was the gross fund, not the amount divided directly among users. After administration costs, court-awarded legal fees and costs, and service awards, the remaining fund was allocated among approved claimants according to a point system.
Each authorized claimant received one point for every month they had an activated Facebook account during the class period. The net fund was divided by the total points for all authorized claimants, and each claimant’s points determined their share. The court-filed notice explained that the amount depended on how many valid claims were submitted and how long each claimant had used Facebook during the class period. The official settlement notice and administrator materials describe the formula.
What the reported payment figures mean
| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| $29.43 | CBS News reported this as the average first-round payment, citing a court filing. It is an average, not a guaranteed amount. CBS News, June 5, 2026. |
| $4.89–$38.36 | AARP reported this as the initial payment range based on court documents. The range does not determine any individual claimant’s award. AARP, updated June 10, 2026. |
| $34.69 initial payment; $6.61 additional payment | AARP writer’s personal example, not a typical or promised outcome. AARP, updated June 10, 2026. |
These figures describe different things: an average, a reported range, and one person’s experience. None can establish what another claimant was approved to receive or whether a payment was issued.

What the second distribution was
The later distribution was a redistribution of funds from first-round payments that had not been cashed, not a new settlement or a new chance to file a claim. CBS News reported that it went to claimants who successfully cashed their original payment. CBS said the distribution began June 9, 2026, and was expected to continue for four weeks; it did not report a universal second-payment amount.
Any additional payment varied by claimant. A first-round average or another claimant’s second payment is not a reliable way to calculate your own amount.

Who qualified and whether claims are still open
The settlement class covered people in the United States who used Facebook from May 24, 2007, through December 22, 2022, inclusive. Being within that class period alone did not guarantee payment: a person also needed to submit a timely, properly completed claim that the administrator approved. The claim deadline has passed.
