Bloomberg reported in 2025 that Foxconn asked Chinese engineers and technicians working in India to return home. The reporting does not establish why they were asked to leave, and it does not confirm a covert operation or a Chinese government order. The available accounts also do not settle whether the staff movement disrupted iPhone production.

What happened at Foxconn’s India operations?

On July 2, 2025, Bloomberg reported that Foxconn had asked hundreds of Chinese engineers and technicians to return home from its iPhone factories in India. Citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg said the move had begun about two months earlier and that the bulk of Chinese staff at southern India plants had been told to fly back. Bloomberg’s July 2 report did not provide a precise headcount or a confirmed list of affected facilities.

Bloomberg reported a related but separately framed development on August 23: about 300 Chinese engineers had been recalled from a factory in India. That figure applies to the factory discussed in that report, not to all staff in the July account. The two reports should not be added together as if they were separate, verified groups or a cumulative total. Bloomberg’s August 23 report describes that later recall.

Why were Chinese engineers leaving?

The reporting reviewed does not establish a reason. It does not confirm that Beijing ordered the returns or that geopolitical pressure caused them. Those ideas may arise as context around manufacturing and cross-border relations, but the accounts do not verify them as the explanation for Foxconn’s action.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Nor did the reports provide a direct explanation from Foxconn or Apple. The staff-return details in Bloomberg’s July account came from unnamed sources familiar with the matter, rather than a published company announcement. That attribution matters: the reported movement is not the same as a fully documented corporate policy or publicly confirmed rationale.

Did the recall disrupt iPhone production in India?

Reuters reported on September 12, 2025, that an Indian government official expected no significant disruption to Foxconn’s operations after employees from China had been asked to return. This was an official expectation, not a measurement showing that production remained unaffected. Reuters’ September 12 report does not establish a later production result.

The engineers’ return alone therefore does not prove that manufacturing slowed, just as the government official’s forecast does not prove that it did not. The accounts reviewed do not supply production figures or independent evidence that resolves the question.

  • The total number of employees involved across Foxconn’s India facilities.
  • The precise list of affected factories and whether every Chinese employee was asked to leave.
  • Foxconn’s reason for the returns and whether any government directed or influenced them.
  • The measured effect, if any, on production after the employees returned.
