Separate World Gold Council data show record half-year demand for Chinese bars and coins in the first half of 2026, alongside falling jewellery demand and continued People’s Bank of China buying. Those different flows help explain why Chinese demand may support gold prices, but they do not prove that imports alone caused a price move or guarantee further gains.
Is China’s gold importing really at a record?
Metals Focus reported that mainland China imported 901 tonnes of gold bullion in 2025 in its April 2026 market spotlight, describing China as the world’s largest bullion importer. The cited passage does not call that annual total a record or give a like-for-like prior high, so the all-time-record claim cannot be confirmed from that figure alone.

To establish an import record, the comparison needs a consistent historical series of imports defined on the same basis. The World Gold Council’s country demand series is not a substitute: it tracks demand categories, begins in 2010, and is updated with quarterly and annual data. Demand and imports are related, but they measure different things.

The World Gold Council had reported 207 tonnes of Chinese bar-and-coin demand in Q1 2026, then a quarterly record, in its 29 April release. That quarter is included in the 314-tonne H1 figure; it is not an additional amount.
Why bullion can flow in while demand segments diverge
Investment buyers were active
The World Gold Council said Chinese bar-and-coin demand was supported by uncertainty, interest in diversification, lower bond yields and price pullbacks that encouraged buying on dips. It also reported a shift by some investment-oriented buyers toward physical investment products. These are the Council’s interpretations of market conditions, not findings from a controlled test of what caused each purchase.

High prices weighed on jewellery buying
At the same time, the Council reported that high and volatile gold prices weighed on jewellery purchases. That helps explain how investment demand can remain strong while jewellery volumes fall: consumers buying bars or coins and consumers buying jewellery are responding to different uses and incentives. The Q2 figures show that divergence, not a single uniform measure of appetite for gold.

Imports do not reveal the final destination
An import total records bullion entering the country. On its own, it does not show when the metal will be used, who will ultimately hold it, or how much goes to households, banks, industry or intermediaries. The sources cited here do not provide a full breakdown of 2025 imports by end use or a final 2026 customs total.

Central-bank buying is a separate channel
The People’s Bank of China bought 33 tonnes in Q2 2026 and 40 tonnes over H1, extending its reported buying streak to 20 months. Its reported holdings reached 2,346 tonnes at end-June, according to the World Gold Council’s 30 July report. The Council characterizes official accumulation as strategic reserve management, distinct from shorter-term investor positioning. These reserve purchases should not be added to imports or private demand without reconciling how each series defines and records flows.
What Chinese buying could mean for global gold prices
Strong physical buying in China can support prices by adding demand for available bullion. It can also affect local-market premiums and the incentive to import. But that is a contribution to the global market balance, not proof that Chinese imports by themselves caused a particular price change.

Gold prices also respond to investment flows, central-bank buying around the world, interest-rate expectations and yields, currency movements, geopolitical risk, mine and recycled supply, and investors’ decisions to take profits or buy during pullbacks. In its 29 April 2026 release, the World Gold Council discussed price momentum and geopolitical risk alongside central-bank purchases, interest-rate headwinds, and mine and recycling supply.

The Council described Q2 2026 as a weak quarter for gold-price performance, while reporting elevated Chinese bar-and-coin demand and faster PBoC buying. That pattern is consistent with some buyers seeking strategic exposure or taking advantage of price dips, even as high prices deter jewellery purchases. It does not establish that prices must rise next.

Global central-bank activity is another distinct influence. The World Gold Council reported 289 tonnes of global net central-bank purchases in Q2 2026, after revising its Q1 estimate to 57 tonnes. It called Q2 a record second quarter; H1 net demand of 345 tonnes was the lowest first half since 2022. These are global reserve figures, not Chinese imports or Chinese consumer demand.

- Check whether the figure refers to imports, jewellery, bars and coins, ETFs or central-bank reserves.
- Look for the period, geography, source and definition behind a claimed record. A half-year demand record does not establish an annual import record.
- Ask whether the figure is gross imports, net flows or demand, and whether a historical comparison uses the same measure.
- Treat a price explanation as one factor among several unless the evidence specifically establishes causation.
The World Gold Council’s figures above cover data through 30 June 2026 and were published on 30 July 2026; the import total is for calendar 2025 and comes from Metals Focus’ April 2026 spotlight. Customs totals, market prices and central-bank reports can change or be revised, so later comparisons should use updated, consistently defined data.
