He meant expanding Roblox into an age-layered social, creative and commercial platform that can retain users as they become teenagers and adults.
The strategy, first outlined prominently in a June 27, 2023 Decoder interview, combines 17+ experiences, AI-assisted creation and immersive advertising. Its opportunity is substantial: older users can become players, creators, customers and advertisers. Its central challenge is equally unusual—Roblox must attract adults while continuing to protect a platform heavily used by minors.

Roblox is not simply trying to replace children with adults
Roblox is often described as a children’s game, but that description misses how the business works. Roblox is a platform where users play experiences made by developers, socialize through avatars, buy virtual goods, attend events and sometimes create their own content using Roblox Studio.

The company now describes Roblox as a “human co-experience platform” for play, learning, communication, exploration and friendship. That is company positioning rather than an independently settled category, but it explains Baszucki’s ambition better than the word “metaverse.” The question is not whether Roblox becomes a metaverse. The question is whether it can become useful across more stages of a user’s life.

What Baszucki’s 2023 strategy involved
The original interview presented three major growth ideas:
- Older-audience experiences: Roblox had introduced experiences intended for users aged 17 and over.
- AI-assisted creation: AI could make it easier for more people to build worlds, assets and interactive experiences.
- Immersive advertising: Brands could reach users through virtual environments, events and other platform-native formats.
The scale was already significant at the time. The episode description cited 66 million daily users and 14 billion hours of engagement in the first quarter of 2023. Those are historical 2023 figures, not current metrics.
Roblox’s current investor materials continue to describe the company as a platform powered by millions of developers using Roblox Studio, while also emphasizing that audiences under 18 remain a core part of its business. “Growing up” therefore means broadening the platform, not discarding its original audience.

There are several business reasons to expand beyond a child-heavy reputation:
- Retention: Teenagers who grew up on Roblox may continue using it if they find experiences that match their changing interests.
- Spending: Older users may have greater independent purchasing power than young children.
- Creator supply: Older users can become developers, designers, educators, entrepreneurs and community leaders.
- Advertising demand: Adults are valuable to many advertisers, although Roblox’s rules restrict how advertising can be delivered to minors.
- Cultural relevance: A wider age range can make Roblox more useful for entertainment companies, brands, schools and social communities.
There are three distinct audiences in this plan: adult users, adult customers such as advertisers and education partners, and existing children who age into the platform. The third group may be the most strategically important. Roblox does not need every adult to become a player if it can keep its existing users engaged as they mature.
What 17+ experiences actually mean
A 17+ label is an age category, not a promise of unrestricted adult content. Mature experiences remain subject to Roblox’s Community Standards and other platform rules. Access can also depend on age assurance, account status, geography and the particular feature involved.

Roblox’s Terms of Use say users may need to verify their age to access features including 17+ experiences. The category is intended to separate some mature themes from younger audiences, but it does not eliminate the need for moderation or prevent every possible interaction between age groups.
That distinction matters for parents and investors alike. A 17+ category is evidence of segmentation, not evidence that Roblox has become an adult platform.
Age assurance is the infrastructure behind the strategy
Age-based products only work if Roblox can place users in reasonably accurate age groups. Roblox currently supports facial age estimation through a selfie-style video and, in relevant cases, government-ID verification. Its support documentation describes age groups including 5–8, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20 and 21+ for facial age estimation.
These processes should not be treated as identical. Facial age estimation estimates an age group; it is not proof of a user’s exact age. ID verification is a separate process. Eligibility and available correction routes can vary by country, account and feature.
Roblox says Persona performs its facial age-estimation check and that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from that process. That is Roblox’s stated policy, not a reason to assume that all age-verification information is handled identically.
For Roblox, age assurance is more than an account feature. It is a prerequisite for separating mature experiences, managing communication, applying advertising restrictions and building trust with parents, regulators and commercial partners.

Advertising turns Roblox into a media business
Advertising is central to the “grow up” thesis because it would make Roblox more than a game marketplace. Brands can use virtual environments, branded experiences, events and other immersive formats to reach users inside the platform.
But advertising on Roblox cannot simply copy the rules of an adult-focused social network. Roblox’s Advertising Standards, updated June 5, 2026, prohibit personalized advertising for users under 18. Younger users may still encounter contextual or nonpersonalized advertising, subject to Roblox’s rules.
The standards also address age-appropriate content, disclosures, purchase pressure and restricted product categories. Roblox’s policies limit advertising for certain food and beverage products, personal-care products, adult-oriented travel, mature entertainment and other categories when younger audiences may be reached.
This creates a difficult balance. Immersive advertising can be more valuable than a banner, but it can also blur the boundary between gameplay and promotion. That risk is greater when children are part of the audience. Roblox’s advertising rules are therefore not just compliance documents; they show how much control the company needs in order to commercialize the platform without undermining trust.
AI may expand the creator economy—and the moderation problem
Baszucki has presented AI as a way to reduce the difficulty of building Roblox experiences. Potential uses include assistance with coding, asset generation, environment construction, localization and moderation.
If those tools work well, they could help smaller creators compete and increase the supply of experiences. They could also let established developers update worlds more quickly.
However, more content is not automatically better content. AI may create repetitive or derivative experiences, copyright disputes, deceptive assets, scams and additional moderation work. It could also increase competition for discovery, making it harder for independent creators to attract users.

The economic question is whether AI creates more sustainable creator businesses or simply floods the platform with inexpensive content. Roblox’s growth depends on both sides of that equation: enough creators to supply compelling experiences and enough monetization to keep high-quality creators participating.
The safety contradiction Roblox cannot avoid
Roblox wants the openness and scale of a social platform, but its user base includes very young children. That creates five connected safety problems:
- Content safety: Harmful or inappropriate material can appear in user-generated experiences.
- Contact safety: Adults and minors may encounter one another through chat, social discovery or shared experiences.
- Commercial safety: Virtual goods, advertising and promotions can create pressure or confusion around spending.
- Privacy safety: Identity, age and behavioral information require careful handling.
- Age-assurance accuracy: Users may be placed in the wrong group or misrepresent their age.
Roblox also restricts attempts to move users off-platform. Under its Community Standards, Social Links access requires age checking and a minimum age of 16. Developers and brands cannot assume they may use arbitrary third-party advertising or measurement services inside Roblox experiences.
These controls reduce risk; they do not make the platform risk-free. Age checks can be wrong, mature content can be incorrectly rated and bad actors can attempt to bypass restrictions. Parents should not interpret a 17+ label as a guarantee that every interaction is safe or that all inappropriate contact has been eliminated.

What Roblox must prove financially
The strategy should be judged by outcomes rather than by broad references to the metaverse. Important measures include:
- Whether older users remain active as they age.
- Whether Roblox increases revenue and bookings without damaging the user experience.
- Whether advertisers return because campaigns are effective and brand-safe.
- Whether creators earn enough to build sustainable businesses.
- Whether AI produces more high-quality experiences rather than just more experiences.
- Whether harmful contact, policy violations and inappropriate advertising decline.
- Whether age assurance is reliable enough for users, parents and partners.
Roblox’s investor-relations overview reports figures for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, including 40 million daily active users and 9 billion hours engaged. Because those figures appear in a corporate overview, readers should consult the underlying filing for full context before treating them as a complete measure of performance.

What this means for creators, brands and investors
Creators gain access to a large built-in audience and tools such as Roblox Studio, but they also operate within Roblox’s discovery, moderation, advertising and monetization systems. AI may reduce development costs while increasing competition.
Brands gain access to immersive formats through Roblox Ads Manager and approved integrations. They must accept restrictions on targeting, disclosure, product categories, measurement and data use. Personalized advertising is not available to users under 18.

More daily users alone would not prove that Roblox has successfully aged up.
Developers comparing Roblox with Fortnite Creative and UEFN, Unity or Unreal Engine should also compare audience ownership, publishing control, monetization terms, moderation responsibilities and age restrictions. These platforms are not interchangeable.
The bottom line
Baszucki’s plan is best understood as platform maturation, not demographic replacement. Roblox is trying to preserve its enormous youth audience while adding age-specific experiences, older creators, adult customers, AI-powered tools and more sophisticated advertising.
Its success will depend less on whether it can make Roblox look older than on whether it can operate an age-diverse platform responsibly. The company must prove that it can separate audiences, protect minors, support creators, control advertising and retain users as they grow. That is what “growing up” means in business terms.
