Google paid Apple an estimated $20 billion in 2022 to secure valuable search distribution on Apple devices. Eddy Cue, Apple’s services chief, defended that arrangement in the U.S. Department of Justice’s search-monopoly case, arguing that replacing Google would sacrifice revenue and impose major technical and product costs.
But “fighting to save” a guaranteed $20 billion paycheck overstates the evidence. The figure is a historical estimate, not a confirmed current annual payment. And while Apple has strong short-term reasons to preserve the deal, it has also explored AI-powered search alternatives that could reduce its dependence on Google.

What Apple’s $20 billion Google payment actually is
The headline figure comes from court evidence concerning Google’s payment to Apple in 2022. Google paid Apple approximately $20 billion for search distribution, primarily through Google’s position as the default search engine in Safari on Apple devices.
That was not a separately reported Apple revenue line called “Google paycheck.” It was an estimate derived from Apple’s share of the search advertising revenue generated through Apple’s distribution. The precise commercial terms are confidential.

Publicly described terms of a 2016 agreement included a reported share of Google’s net search-advertising revenue from Safari traffic. One account based on DOJ-filed material described Apple’s share as roughly 40% of net revenue, or approximately 36% of gross revenue after deductions. Those figures should be treated as reported contract details, not as a complete public accounting of every Apple-Google arrangement. The court’s opinion said the 2022 payment represented approximately 17.5% of Apple’s operating profit at the time.
That makes the payment financially important, but three qualifications matter:
- $20 billion refers specifically to 2022. It is not proof that Apple receives exactly $20 billion every year.
- The figure is estimated. Apple does not publicly report it as a standalone annual payment.
- It is revenue-sharing income, not necessarily pure profit. Apple still has related platform, product, contractual and operational costs.
Why Eddy Cue defended Google in court
Cue, Apple’s senior vice president overseeing services, was an important witness because he could explain how Apple evaluates search quality, distribution economics and potential alternatives. His testimony represented Apple’s position in litigation; it does not mean Cue personally controls every Apple-Google contract decision.
Apple’s argument was straightforward: Google was the best available search engine for Apple users, and abandoning it would be expensive.
Cue testified that Apple considered Google materially better than Bing and other available providers. That is Apple’s assessment, not an independently measured ranking. Apple also presented an internal analysis suggesting that switching to Microsoft could leave it approximately $10 billion below the earnings it expected from retaining Google as the default.
The $10 billion figure should not be read as an immediate cash loss. It was a scenario estimate comparing expected economics under different search arrangements. A replacement could produce less search-advertising revenue, require migration work and create user-experience risks without guaranteeing that users would accept the alternative.

The costs Apple would have to weigh

- Indexing and spam detection at global scale

Apple could switch to an established provider such as Bing, negotiate with multiple AI-search companies or build more of the technology itself. None is frictionless. Building a full search engine would require years of infrastructure investment, quality tuning, advertising technology and defenses against manipulation. Relying on a partner would reduce development time but preserve supplier dependence.
Why the DOJ considers the deal anticompetitive
The DOJ’s case focused less on whether users are technically allowed to change Safari’s search engine and more on the power of the default. Most users keep default settings, so being preselected gives a search engine immediate scale, traffic and advertising opportunity.
The government argued that Google’s payments helped preserve its dominance by giving rivals less access to users. Scale matters in search: more queries can support better ranking systems, more advertising data, broader infrastructure and higher revenue. If competitors cannot obtain enough distribution, they may struggle to reach the scale required to challenge Google.
The DOJ’s 2020 complaint described Apple’s default position as a major source of search traffic and revenue for Google. Its theory was that paying for defaults could foreclose competition even when users can manually select another provider. The official case materials are available on the DOJ’s Google case page.

Apple and Google have offered the competing explanation: users can change their search provider, Google delivers a high-quality product, and the payment compensates Apple for valuable distribution and traffic. The court ultimately found Google liable for monopolization, but the final remedy did not impose a blanket ban on Google paying Apple for default placement.

What the final judgment changed
The final judgment entered on December 5, 2025, restricted how Google could structure qualifying default-search and generative-AI agreements rather than simply outlawing the Apple arrangement.
Among the important restrictions described in the judgment:
- Covered default agreements generally must expire after no more than one year.
- Apple must be expressly permitted to promote third-party general-search and generative-AI products.
- Google cannot condition payment for being the default on one Apple feature or device on Apple making Google the default across other covered features or devices in the prohibited manner.
- Data-sharing and search-syndication obligations are intended to make it easier for qualified competitors to challenge Google.
According to a DOJ compliance report, the contractual remedies took effect on February 3, 2026. That means the legal result was greater flexibility and less contractual lock-in—not an automatic end to Google’s payments to Apple. The final judgment and DOJ compliance report provide the controlling details.
Does Apple still receive the $20 billion?
The responsible answer is that the public record verifies the approximate 2022 payment, but does not establish a permanent or current annual amount of $20 billion.
A report based on DOJ-filed material said the then-current arrangement ran at least through September 2026, with Apple having an option to extend it for another two years under the reported terms. Because contract details are confidential and the case remains under appeal, it would be inaccurate to say the money is either permanently secured or already gone. See The Information’s report for the reported duration and revenue-share details.
The litigation was still active in the supplied August 2026 snapshot, with the DOJ and states filing appellate papers on July 28, 2026. Appeals can affect the durability or interpretation of the remedies, so Apple’s future arrangement remains a legal and commercial question rather than a settled headline.

Why Apple can defend Google while exploring alternatives
There is no contradiction in Apple protecting the current payment while preparing for a different future.

In the short term, Google offers a mature product and a very large revenue stream. Apple has little reason to abandon that income casually if users are satisfied and the arrangement remains legally available.
At the same time, dependence on one search supplier creates strategic risk. Apple may want more bargaining power, greater control over privacy and user experience, and an alternative if regulators restrict the deal or AI changes how people search.
Reports about Cue’s testimony and Apple’s interest in AI search indicate that the company has considered alternatives. That does not prove Apple is preparing an immediate Google replacement. It suggests Apple is hedging against several possibilities:
- Traditional search becoming less important as AI answers improve
- Google’s payment becoming less valuable or harder to structure
- Regulators requiring more prominent rival products
- Apple wanting tighter integration between search, Siri, Spotlight and its privacy strategy
- Google gaining too much leverage over Apple’s platform economics
Apple’s likely strategy is therefore not “Google forever” or “Google out immediately.” It is to preserve the revenue while keeping an escape route open.

What could happen next
1. Google may remain the default, but under more flexible terms
The judgment allows a Google default arrangement subject to restrictions. A shorter contract cycle could give Apple more frequent opportunities to renegotiate and give rivals more opportunities to compete.

2. Apple could use rivals as leverage
Apple does not need to build a complete search engine to benefit from competition. Bing, AI-search providers or other partners could improve Apple’s negotiating position even if Google remains the primary default.
3. AI could change the economics
If users increasingly ask assistants for answers rather than entering queries into a traditional search box, the value of a default search engine could change. But AI introduces its own problems, including hallucinations, source reliability, privacy concerns, unclear advertising models and dependence on rapidly changing vendors.
4. Users may notice little at first
Contractual changes do not necessarily produce an immediate visible change in Safari. The practical signs would be new search-provider choices, more prominent rival promotions, changes to Siri or Spotlight results, or a different default after a renewal.

For Apple, the Google arrangement is too valuable to dismiss casually. Cue’s courtroom defense makes sense as a defense of a lucrative, convenient and technically mature source of income—not as proof that Apple has permanently committed to Google.
The $20 billion number is real as an estimate for 2022, but it should not be treated as Apple’s guaranteed annual paycheck. The final judgment did not automatically eliminate the deal, while the appeal and future contract decisions leave its long-term value uncertain.
The bigger story is Apple’s balancing act: protect a major near-term revenue stream, comply with changing antitrust rules and develop enough alternatives that Google cannot determine Apple’s search future.
