Nintendo Switch 2 launched June 5, 2025, at $449.99—but the U.S. price is now $499.99

Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the U.S. on June 5, 2025, at $449.99. Nintendo announced a revised $499.99 MSRP effective September 1, 2026. Here’s what buyers get, what carries over, and what extra costs to expect.

The Nintendo Switch 2 did not arrive on June 5 as an upcoming product: it launched in the United States on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s original U.S. MSRP was $449.99 before sales tax, but Nintendo announced that the price would increase to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. The launch bundle, which included a digital copy of Mario Kart World, was originally $499.99.

For shoppers, the important distinction is between the historical launch price and the price that applies after the September 2026 revision.

The Nintendo Switch 2 price and launch date

Nintendo announced the Switch 2 on April 2, 2025. The console launched in the U.S. on June 5, 2025, at a suggested retail price of $449.99 before sales tax.

Nintendo later announced a U.S. MSRP increase to $499.99 beginning September 1, 2026. Therefore, $449.99 is the Switch 2’s original launch price—not the price shoppers should assume applies after that date. See Nintendo’s financial materials for the announced revision.

The original Nintendo announcement confirms the launch date, pricing, bundle, and included hardware.

What comes in the standard box?

The base package includes:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • Left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers
  • Joy-Con 2 Grip
  • Two Joy-Con 2 Straps
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
  • Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter
  • USB-C charging cable

The standard package does not include a game, camera, Pro Controller, additional controllers, or expandable storage. The Mario Kart World game was included only with the separate launch bundle.

What is new about the hardware?

The Switch 2 keeps Nintendo’s hybrid format: it can be used handheld, on a tabletop, or connected to a TV. Its main hardware improvements include a larger display, more storage, higher performance, and redesigned controllers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Display: 7.9-inch LCD with 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10, and variable refresh rate up to 120Hz in supported situations.
  • TV output: Up to 4K at 60 frames per second, or up to 120 frames per second at supported lower resolutions. The game and TV must support the relevant mode.
  • Storage: 256GB internal storage, with some capacity reserved for system software.
  • Battery: Approximately 2 to 6.5 hours, depending on the game and usage conditions.
  • Weight: Approximately 534 grams with Joy-Con 2 attached; the console alone weighs about 401 grams.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, two USB-C ports, and a built-in microphone.
  • Expandable storage: microSD Express cards, with Nintendo listing support for capacities up to 2TB.

The display is LCD rather than OLED. Similarly, “4K gaming” does not mean every game renders at 4K, and 120Hz or HDR support depends on the software and equipment. Nintendo’s detailed specifications are available in its corporate release.

Joy-Con 2 and mouse controls

Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically instead of using the original Switch rail mechanism. Either controller can operate as a mouse in compatible games.

Mouse functionality is not universal. It depends on game support and the surface being used. Nintendo warns that some fabrics may not respond properly and that rubbing a controller against fabric can cause color fading.

Joy-Con 2 controllers are also not universally interchangeable with original Joy-Con accessories. For example, they do not attach to the original Joy-Con Grip or original Joy-Con Charging Grip.

GameChat, GameShare, and Virtual Game Cards

GameChat

GameChat is activated with the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2. It supports voice chat with up to 12 people, screen sharing with up to four friends, and optional video chat when a compatible USB-C camera is connected.

The camera is sold separately. Children under 16 require parent or guardian approval to use GameChat through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.

Nintendo allowed GameChat without a Nintendo Switch Online membership through the end of March 2026. That launch exception has ended; Nintendo Switch Online is required for GameChat afterward.

GameShare

GameShare lets a Switch 2 owner invite other players to temporarily participate in compatible games through local play, including some situations involving an original Switch. Only the Switch 2 owner can initiate the invitation, and the shared access ends with the GameShare session. It does not permanently transfer a game to another player, and Switch systems cannot receive Switch 2-exclusive games through GameChat-based GameShare.

  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

Virtual Game Cards

Virtual Game Cards let users manage purchased digital games from the Home Menu, load games onto up to two systems associated with the same Nintendo Account, and play an activated game offline. Eligible digital games can also be lent to members of the same Nintendo Account Family Group for up to 14 days, subject to Nintendo’s conditions. Some loading, pairing, lending, and return functions require internet access or local communication.

Backward compatibility: useful, but not universal

The Switch 2 can run many physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but it is not fully backward-compatible with every title or accessory. Compatibility can depend on the game, its control method, and the hardware it requires.

Check Nintendo’s compatibility guide for a specific game before buying. Important examples include:

  • Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 does not fit the Ring-Con or leg strap for the relevant play modes, so original Joy-Con are needed.
  • 1-2-Switch: infrared-camera functionality requires the original right Joy-Con.
  • Nintendo Labo: some Toy-Con products cannot accommodate the larger Switch 2 console.
  • Original Joy-Con: they can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, but charging them requires an original Switch console or a compatible charging accessory.

Nintendo’s accessory compatibility support page lists further exceptions.

Will existing Switch accessories work?

Some will, but buyers should not assume that an existing Switch setup transfers intact.

  • Original Joy-Con and the original Pro Controller can be used wirelessly with Switch 2.
  • The original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but Nintendo says it cannot power the Switch 2 Dock because of different power-output requirements.
  • Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the original Joy-Con Grip or original Joy-Con Charging Grip.
  • Switch 2 docks and original Switch docks should not be treated as interchangeable replacements.
  • Switch 2 game storage expansion requires microSD Express. Ordinary microSD cards are not the equivalent solution for storing Switch 2 games.

Nintendo’s specifications say an update is required before a microSD Express card can be used. Existing ordinary microSD cards can be used for transferring screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch, according to Nintendo.

Storage: the $449.99 console is not the whole budget

Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal storage—eight times the original standard Switch’s internal storage by Nintendo’s comparison—but the usable amount is lower because system software reserves space.

Digital-heavy buyers should budget for a microSD Express card rather than reusing a standard microSD card. Nintendo listed support for cards up to 2TB.

Other possible costs include games, Nintendo Switch Online, a camera for video chat, additional controllers, or original Joy-Con needed for certain legacy games. Nintendo Store listings observed on August 18, 2026 showed a 256GB Samsung microSD Express card at $59.99, a Switch 2 Pro Controller at $89.99, a Switch 2 Camera at $54.99, and an additional Joy-Con 2 pair at $99.99. These are dated store signals, not guaranteed current prices or availability.

Games: launch software versus the later library

Nintendo’s launch announcement identified several launch-day or launch-window games, including:

  • Mario Kart World
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
  • Street Fighter 6
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition
  • FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
  • Split Fiction

Not every game in an announcement list necessarily released on launch day. For the later software picture, Nintendo’s store listings during the research period included titles such as Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Hades II – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Resident Evil Requiem, FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, Star Fox, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Availability and prices can change; consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 games showroom for current listings.

Who should buy the Switch 2?

Existing Switch owners

Upgrade if you want Switch 2-exclusive games, faster performance, a larger 1080p handheld display, more internal storage, or enhanced editions of existing games. Before buying, check compatibility for any accessory-dependent games you regularly play.

New Nintendo buyers

The Switch 2 is the forward-looking option for Nintendo’s current hybrid ecosystem. Include the cost of at least one game, possible storage expansion, and Nintendo Switch Online if you need online play or GameChat.

Families and multiplayer households

The base console includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers, enough for some two-player games. A family that needs more controllers may need an additional pair. GameChat also includes parental approval requirements for users under 16, and video chat requires a separately purchased camera.

Digital buyers

Plan for microSD Express storage. Existing ordinary microSD cards are not the normal game-storage upgrade path for Switch 2.

Owners of legacy accessories

Keep an original Switch if you rely on Ring-Con, certain Nintendo Labo products, infrared-camera features, or other accessories that require original Joy-Con. The Switch 2 supports many older games and controllers, but not every old setup.

How much did the launch cost versus the current MSRP?

At launch, the standard console cost $449.99 and the Mario Kart World bundle cost $499.99. That made the bundle an attractive value for anyone who planned to purchase the game because it cost $50 more than the hardware alone and included the digital game.

Nintendo’s announced September 1, 2026 hardware revision changes the comparison: the standard system’s revised MSRP is $499.99, while the original bundle price should not be assumed to remain current unless Nintendo or a retailer confirms its availability and price. The bundle’s launch price and contents are documented in Nintendo’s original announcement.

What Nintendo’s early sales figure tells you

Nintendo reported more than 3.5 million Switch 2 systems sold worldwide during the first four days after launch, which it described as the highest first-four-day global sales level for any Nintendo hardware. That is a company-reported sales result, not a measure of whether the console is the best value for an individual household.

Bottom line for buyers

The statement “Nintendo Switch 2 arrives on June 5th for $449.99” was accurate as a 2025 launch announcement. It is now historical. The console launched on June 5, 2025, and Nintendo’s announced U.S. MSRP is $499.99 from September 1, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Switch 2 makes the most financial sense for buyers who want its newer games and performance improvements and can account for storage, software, online-service, and accessory costs. Existing Switch owners should check game-by-game compatibility—especially for Ring-Con, infrared-camera, Nintendo Labo, and other specialized accessories—before treating the upgrade as a simple replacement.
