It keeps time less precisely than a quartz watch, it needs servicing that the purchase price does not cover, and it reacts to how you wear it and where you leave it. The case changes if you buy the watch for its movement, its craftsmanship, or the ritual of winding it, and you accept the running costs knowingly.
What “doesn’t make sense” actually means here
The claim holds on two grounds: timekeeping and long-term ownership cost. It does not hold on every ground. Mechanical watches remain a legitimate hobby purchase, and the manufacturers whose guidance this article draws on do not argue otherwise. None of them publishes a price below which a mechanical watch stops being worth servicing, so “budget” in this article means an entry-level mechanical watch whose price is low enough that a service bill could be a meaningful share of what you paid. Where that line falls for you is a judgment you make with your own numbers.
Why mechanical watches drift more than quartz
A mechanical watch regulates time with a balance wheel and a mainspring, and that system responds to its environment. Five factors affect it, according to the guidance from Baume & Mercier, Seiko, and the Japan Clock & Watch Association:
- Winding state: how much energy is left in the mainspring changes the rate.
- Position: the same watch can run at different rates lying flat, dial up, or dial down.
- Temperature: heat and cold change how the parts behave.
- Shock: a knock can alter the rate, and it can also damage parts.
- Magnetism: nearby magnetic fields can affect the movement.
Quartz movements are far less exposed to these factors. Baume & Mercier’s FAQ attributes quartz precision to its high vibration frequency: “A quartz watch is extremely precise due to its high frequency of vibrations (32 kHz).” That is the brand explaining its own comparison, not an independent test.

What the accuracy figures do and do not tell you
Manufacturers and industry bodies publish accuracy figures, but they use different units and different measurement conditions. The table lines them up without converting them into a single measure, because the frames are not the same.
| Source (publication year not stated on the page) | Quartz figure | Mechanical figure | What the figure is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baume & Mercier FAQ | About 1–2 seconds per week | About 1–2 minutes per week, per the brand’s general comparison | A general brand comparison, not a guarantee. The FAQ’s own wording mixes “per week” and “per year” in its quartz sentence, so read the units as an order-of-magnitude comparison. |
| Japan Clock & Watch Association explainer | About ±20 seconds per month for a general quartz watch | At least several seconds per day | A general description. It names position, winding, temperature, shock, and magnetism as mechanical influences. |
| Victorinox FAQ | Not stated | Between −2 and +20 seconds per day for its own mechanical movement | Brand- and movement-specific. It describes one manufacturer’s range, not a budget-watch standard. |
| Seiko accuracy page | Not stated | Not stated as a single figure | Explains real-world influences on mechanical accuracy and does not give a rate range. |
The practical reading is simple. A mechanical watch can be expected to drift by seconds or more each day, and the amount depends on how it is worn and how the movement is serviced. A quartz watch is measured in seconds per week or month. A catalogue figure is a starting point for comparison, not a promise that your wrist will get the same result.

The costs that show up after the purchase
Service intervals differ by maker
Each maker sets its own schedule, and the schedules are not interchangeable.
| Maker | Recommended interval | What the maker says is included |
|---|---|---|
| Seiko | Every three years | Examination, cleaning, and oiling at its service center |
| Victorinox | Every four to six years | Complete mechanical overhaul |
| Baume & Mercier | Every three to five years; five to seven years for watches with its Baumatic movement | Complete service. The brand also recommends a water-resistance check every year. |
The intervals are the most useful part of this table for a budget decision, because they turn a vague “maintenance” worry into a count. Over a 12-year ownership period, a three-year interval means four service visits, a four-to-six-year interval means two or three overhauls, and a three-to-five-year interval means two to four complete services. Those counts come from the published intervals alone. The sources do not give service prices, so the cost has to come from a quote for your model.

- Japanese automatic movement with analog display; Crystal Type: Mineral
- Fashionable, very charming for all occasions. Amazing looking watch, a great gift for family and friends.
Winding and wear
Mechanical watches must be wound, either by hand or by the motion of your wrist. Victorinox says its automatic models need 8 to 10 hours of daily wear to fully wind, and they hold 38 to 48 hours of power reserve depending on the model. Those figures are the brand’s guidance for its own models. If you take the watch off every night, a model with that wind requirement may never reach full power, and the watch will run down between wearings. Quartz needs a battery replacement at intervals instead, which is a far smaller and more predictable task.

- Get a written service quote for the exact model from an authorized service center or a competent independent watchmaker. Ask whether the quote covers the maker’s full service or only a cleaning and oiling.
- Multiply that quote by the number of service visits over the years you expect to keep the watch, using the interval table above.
- Add a reserve for an unplanned repair. The sources give no failure rate, so choose an amount you could pay without strain.
- Compare the total with the price of the watch itself, then with the cost of a quartz watch you would be happy to wear.
- Ask whether the difference buys you something you will use. If the answer is a movement you want to see and wind, the cost may be worth it. If the answer is only the time, it is hard to justify.
When a budget mechanical watch does make sense
NOMOS Glashütte’s explainer notes that for some wearers, an appreciation of craftsmanship is what draws them to mechanical timekeeping. That is a legitimate reason, and it is the one most likely to justify the running costs above. A few conditions make the purchase more sensible:
- You value the movement, the finishing, or the winding ritual more than accuracy.
- You accept that the watch will drift and will need adjustment, and you do not plan to rely on it for timing.
- You commit to the maker’s service interval and budget for it.
- You have checked the specific watch rather than the category: its materials, its warranty terms, its stated water-resistance rating, and whether the maker supports that model with parts and service.
The general argument cannot tell you whether any particular budget watch is well made. That depends on the model, so check it before you buy.
Choosing between the two
- Choose quartz if you want accurate time with little attention, you wear the watch irregularly, or you want predictable running costs.
- Choose mechanical if the movement and craftsmanship are the reason you want the watch, you will wear and wind it regularly, and you can cover the service interval without strain.
Either choice is defensible. The mistake is buying a mechanical watch for accurate timekeeping and then being surprised by the drift and the service bills.
