Jeff Yass is a co-founder of Susquehanna International Group, a major trading firm, and one of the country’s largest political donors. Susquehanna’s past investment in TikTok parent ByteDance links Yass financially to the platform, while Yass has publicly opposed a TikTok ban. Reporting documents his meeting with Donald Trump, political donations and the timing of enforcement delays—but does not establish that Yass caused Trump’s policy shifts.
Who is Jeff Yass?
Yass is the founder of Susquehanna International Group, a proprietary trading firm based in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Bloomberg describes the firm as focused on market-making and derivatives, with additional activity in private equity and venture capital. Yass’s wealth derives primarily from Susquehanna, according to Bloomberg.
Bloomberg’s wealth and ownership figures are estimates based on its methodology and outside reporting; they are not confirmed measures of Yass’s liquid assets or a personally held TikTok stake. That distinction matters because Susquehanna’s investments and Yass’s own finances are related, but not interchangeable.
How much does Jeff Yass spend on politics?
A December 5, 2025, Washington Post profile reported that Yass had donated more than $350 million to political campaigns since 2015, including tens of millions during 2025. That is the Post’s cumulative figure as of its reporting, not a live total.

Earlier, Axios reported on March 21, 2024, that Yass had given more than $46 million to conservative causes and political action committees in the 2024 election cycle as of that date. Keystone Newsroom reported that he made two donations totaling $16 million to MAGA Inc. in early 2025. These figures cover different periods and categories, so they should not be added together as if they were separate totals.
What causes does Yass support?
School choice is his central political priority
The Washington Post describes school choice and vouchers as Yass’s principal political priority. In an interview with the Post, Yass said: “I have come across what I think is a great way to relieve the suffering of tens of millions of kids.” He has argued that public schools fail many students and that families should be able to use public funds for the school they choose.

The Post reported that Yass’s political contributions were critical to a Texas voucher plan. But spending has not guaranteed the outcome he wants everywhere: a Pennsylvania voucher proposal remained unpassed at the time of the Post’s December 2025 account, despite years of political spending.
Critics question voucher accountability
Critics cited by the Post argue that vouchers can direct public funds to private schools that have limited accountability and may select which students to admit. The reporting also notes that in some states many voucher recipients were already attending private school. Those concerns and patterns vary by state; they do not describe every voucher program or recipient.

Yass has defended his involvement in philanthropic terms. “They needed a philanthropist,” he told the Post. “I felt it was my role to be that philanthropist.” He also acknowledged how his wealth can shape public perception: “To most people it’s like if you’re a libertarian billionaire, you must be Lex Luthor trying to do something nefarious. If I gave to a hospital, you wouldn’t be saying that.”
What is Jeff Yass’s connection to TikTok?
Susquehanna invested in ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, creating a financial connection between the trading firm and the platform. Bloomberg estimates that Susquehanna historically owned about 15% of ByteDance. That is a company-level estimate, not proof that Yass personally owned that percentage.

Bloomberg reports that ByteDance completed a sale of TikTok US in January 2026. Following that transaction, Bloomberg estimates Yass’s indirect interest in TikTok US at roughly 3.7%. This, too, is an estimate based on Bloomberg’s calculations and underlying reports—not a confirmed direct personal holding. The transaction means that older descriptions of ByteDance’s ownership of TikTok US do not reflect the current arrangement reported by Bloomberg.

Yass publicly opposed a ban. Axios reported in March 2024 that he told The Wall Street Journal: “TikTok is about free speech and innovation, the epitome of libertarian and free market ideals. The idea of banning TikTok is an anathema to everything I believe.”

Axios also reported that Trump’s public stance on TikTok changed after a brief meeting with Yass at a Club for Growth donor gathering. Trump said they had not discussed TikTok. The meeting and the contrasting public statements are documented; they do not establish that Yass persuaded Trump or caused the shift.
Keystone Newsroom reported that Yass’s two early-2025 donations to MAGA Inc. came near delays by the Trump administration in enforcing the TikTok ban. A critic quoted by the outlet argued that the donations showed how wealth can shape policy. The timing supports a chronology, not proof that the donations caused the delays or secured a particular decision.
What does the reporting establish—and what does it not?
- Documented: Yass’s political donations, his stated support for school choice, Susquehanna’s investment connection to ByteDance, his public opposition to a TikTok ban, a meeting with Trump and the timing of subsequent donations and enforcement delays.
- Not established by that chronology alone: that Yass personally caused Trump’s change in position, that the meeting was about TikTok, or that donations bought or secured a policy outcome.
- Important distinction: political spending has been consequential in some policy fights, including the Texas voucher plan described by the Post, but outcomes have been mixed, as Pennsylvania’s unpassed proposal illustrates.
What did ProPublica report about Yass’s taxes?
In a June 2022 investigation based on leaked tax records, ProPublica calculated Yass’s income and tax rates. A Susquehanna spokesman disputed the story, saying it contained “numerous misstatements and factual errors” and arguing that the rates were understated because foreign taxes and charitable contributions were omitted. The spokesman also described Yass as a “self-described Never Trumper.” ProPublica reported that the spokesman declined to identify specific errors and defended its methodology. The outlet’s calculations and the firm’s rebuttal should therefore be understood as competing claims, not as an uncontested account.
