Why American Airlines Flight Attendants’ Profit-Sharing Checks Trailed Delta’s

A reported gap between American and Delta flight-attendant profit-sharing checks does not by itself show the airlines used different formulas. Here is what the available figures establish—and what they do not.

American Airlines flight attendants reportedly received far less in the profit-sharing payment discussed in early 2026 than Delta flight attendants did. View from the Wing, citing a union communication, reported an American bonus of 0.3%—often $150 or less—versus roughly a month’s extra pay at Delta. Those figures have not been independently verified against the airlines’ original payout documents, and the comparison does not establish that American used a different formula.

What was reported about the two payouts?

The comparison concerns a profit-sharing payment reported in January 2026. View from the Wing said American flight attendants received a 0.3% bonus, often $150 or less, while Delta flight attendants received roughly a month’s worth of extra pay. The report attributed the comparison to a union letter; the letter and official payout statements are not available here, so the figures should be treated as reported amounts rather than audited, directly comparable employee examples.

The labels matter: the American figure is reported as a percentage and typical dollar amount, while Delta’s is described in relation to a month’s pay. Without each plan’s calculation details and comparable employee earnings, those descriptions do not show precisely how much two similarly situated attendants received.

Did American and Delta use the same formula?

Delta’s February 25, 2025 employee newsletter said American flight attendants had negotiated to follow the same profit-sharing formula Delta had used for years. Delta also said American’s payout would be lower because American was less profitable. That is Delta’s characterization, not an independently established comparison of the two plan documents.

A shared formula does not mean equal checks. A formula can calculate a payout from a company’s financial results and an employee’s eligible earnings; if company results differ, payouts can differ even when the formula is the same. The available figures do not establish that the reported 0.3% and Delta’s percentage use identical calculation bases.

What does Delta’s 10.04% figure mean?

Delta’s February 2025 employee newsletter gave 10.04% as its profit-sharing figure for the 2025 payment and said the payment applied equally, including to first-year flight attendants. This is Delta’s statement about its own payment. It should not be compared directly with American’s reported 0.3% as though both percentages necessarily represent the same base, period, or method of calculation.

How does the comparison fit with Delta’s other compensation figures?

The Associated Press reported that Delta provided $1.4 billion in employee profit sharing for 2023. In April 2024, Delta also announced a 5% pay increase for flight attendants and ground workers. These figures provide dated context about Delta compensation, but neither is an individual comparison with the American payment reported in 2026.

In the April 2024 announcement, Delta CEO Ed Bastian said, “With this increase in base pay and starting rates, we continue our commitment to provide Delta people with industry-leading total compensation for industry-leading performance.” The Associated Press quoted the statement from Bastian’s employee memo.

Who does the American workforce figure cover?

American Airlines Group’s 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025, says the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) represented about 25,520 mainline flight attendants. The filing says the contract was amendable in 2029. The headcount refers to American’s mainline flight attendants, not employees of its regional affiliates; it does not specify how many attendants received the reported profit-sharing amount or how their individual checks were calculated.

Is the dispute about bonuses the same as the boarding-pay issue?

No. A 2026 court ruling mentions that American began paying boarding pay at half the regular rate for boarding time in 2025, while summarizing allegations about other unpaid tasks. Those allegations concern compensation for work time, not the profit-sharing payment. The cited passage summarizes allegations; it does not establish that the court decided their merits.

What can employees conclude from the available figures?

  • The early-2026 report describes a substantial difference in the payments flight attendants received, but its American and Delta figures are not supported here by the original payout records.
  • Delta said American had adopted the same formula, while attributing the lower American payout to lower profitability. That statement does not prove the two airlines’ plan terms or calculation bases are identical in every respect.
  • The sources do not provide a matched example showing what attendants with comparable earnings, tenure, and eligibility received at each airline.
