The $431.72 price was reported as what her employer paid for the itinerary; it was not a publicly reviewed receipt. American Airlines sells Landline motorcoach segments as connections in its network, and says aa.com and its app identify them as motorcoach travel. To tell whether an American itinerary includes a bus, inspect each segment for the words “Operated by The Landline Company.”
What happened on Simone’s trip
In a March 22, 2026 report, AOL said Simone expected an American Airlines flight from South Bend International Airport to Chicago O’Hare (ORD), but boarded a bus for the trip to Chicago. She said her employer had paid $431.72 for the itinerary. The amount and booking details are her reported account, not independently audited fare records.
The Mary Sue, reporting March 21, added that Simone said her workplace arranged the reservation and she did not book it herself. She understood her confirmations to refer to a flight and said she had cleared airport security before boarding the motorcoach. AOL reported that she noticed the departure area seemed unusual before realizing the bus itself was headed to Chicago.
Simone told AOL, “It feels like a scam,” saying her emails and boarding pass referred to a flight rather than clearly telling her she would board a bus. That is her characterization of the experience—not a finding that American committed fraud or that she was legally owed a refund. The reports did not establish the booking interface she saw, the full contents of her emails, or the outcome of any complaint or refund request.

How to tell whether an American itinerary includes a bus
American describes Landline as a premium motorcoach connection between regional airports and ORD or Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). Its current Landline page says these connections are integrated into airline itineraries and identifies the motorcoach segment by operator. Review the segment details rather than relying on a general itinerary label or the fact that the trip appears in an airline booking.
- Open the full itinerary. If a workplace travel desk or third-party site booked the trip, ask for the complete segment-by-segment confirmation, not just the summary view.
- Check the operating-company notation. Look for “Operated by The Landline Company” on a connection to or from ORD or PHL. American says this wording identifies a Landline motorcoach segment.
- Confirm the route and endpoints. Compare the segment’s origin, destination, and transfer details with American’s Landline page. A motorcoach segment may connect a regional airport with ORD or PHL; it is not an aircraft flight between those points.
- Check with the booking channel if anything is unclear. American’s spokesperson told The Mary Sue that the airline identifies motorcoach segments on aa.com and in its mobile app, but said it could not speak for what third-party flight websites display. If an employer or outside service made the booking, ask that service to confirm what its interface showed.
American’s page says travelers check bags and clear security before travel, and describes baggage handling and onward airline connections as part of the itinerary. It also lists complimentary entertainment, Wi-Fi, and power at every seat. These features do not change the mode of the Landline segment: the regional connection itself is by road.

What American says—and what Simone says she saw
The accounts describe different views of the disclosure. Simone said her confirmations and boarding pass referred to a flight and did not clearly tell her she would board a bus. The Mary Sue published an emailed response from an American spokesperson saying the airline marks the relevant segments as motorcoach travel on aa.com and its app, while noting it could not speak for third-party booking sites.
The spokesperson described Landline as scheduled motorcoach operations integrated with airline connections. The spokesperson also said eligible fares earn AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points. That is the airline’s general statement as quoted by The Mary Sue; it does not independently establish how Simone’s particular booking was displayed or whether her fare qualified.

AOL also described commenters sharing an email screenshot that identified Landline and a luxury bus. The report did not independently authenticate those screenshots, so they do not resolve what Simone’s own booking materials said.

The figures illustrate why a traveler may want to compare options, but they do not show that the itineraries were interchangeable. Before comparing a motorcoach-and-airline itinerary with bus or rail tickets, check the total price, exact origin and destination, end-to-end journey time, baggage arrangements, transfers, and whether the trip includes an onward flight. Prices from the reports are snapshots from March 2026, not current booking quotes.

What to do if you discover a motorcoach segment
- Ask the person or service that booked the trip to explain the itinerary and provide the complete confirmation.
- Compare the segment details with American’s current Landline information, since routes and service descriptions can change.
- If you need to travel by aircraft for a particular leg, contact the airline or booking service before departure to discuss available alternatives and any fare conditions that apply to your ticket.
- Keep the confirmation, itinerary, and any messages about the booking if you need to ask the booking service or airline to review what was disclosed.
American’s current page lists ORD connections with Rockford, Illinois (RFD), and South Bend, Indiana (SBN); for PHL it lists Allentown/Bethlehem (ABE), Atlantic City (ACY), Trenton-Mercer (TTN), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AVP), and Wilmington (ILG). Check the page when booking rather than assuming a listed route or operating arrangement will remain unchanged.
