Amazon said it dismissed more than six senior managers associated with its JFK8 fulfillment center in Staten Island after reviewing the facility’s operations and leadership. The terminations came about a month after workers voted to form a union. Some employees and managers reportedly viewed the firings as a response to that victory, but the available reporting did not establish that union activity was the reason.
What happened at JFK8?
In a report published May 7, 2022, by The Irish Times and originally published by The New York Times, Amazon was reported to have told more than six senior managers involved with JFK8 on the preceding Thursday that they were being fired. The approximate count came from four current and former employees who spoke anonymously. The report did not name the managers or establish an exact total. It also said the dismissals fell outside Amazon’s usual employee review cycle. The Irish Times report
JFK8 is Amazon’s fulfillment center in Staten Island. In a 2017 announcement, Amazon described the facility as 855,000 square feet and projected that it would support more than 2,250 full-time jobs. What reason did Amazon give?
An Amazon spokesperson said the company had spent several weeks evaluating JFK8’s “operations and leadership” and made management changes as a result. The spokesperson described continuous improvement as part of the company’s culture, adding: “we believe it’s important to take time to review whether or not we’re doing the best we could be for our team.” Two people quoted in the report said the managers were told the reason was an “organisational change.” The Irish Times report Engadget’s contemporaneous coverage

Why did employees connect the firings to the union vote?
The timing drew attention: JFK8 workers had voted to form the Amazon Labor Union about a month earlier. The report said many of the managers had been responsible for carrying out Amazon’s response to the organizing effort. It also said some employees and managers interpreted the dismissals as a response to the union victory. That is an account of how sources viewed the decision, not proof of Amazon’s motive.

- Reported employee and manager perception: the timing and the affected managers’ roles led some to see the firings as connected to the union win.
The article did not identify a formal finding or evidence establishing that Amazon fired these managers because of union activity. Nor did the company’s public explanation resolve what motivated each termination.

A November 18, 2022, federal court injunction concerned a different JFK8 employee—not the senior managers. The National Labor Relations Board said the injunction directed Amazon to cease and desist from discharging employees in retaliation for protected activity. The petition involved an employee allegedly fired after advocating for workplace health and safety protections; the injunction did not order that employee’s interim reinstatement at that time. That separate case is relevant labor context, but it did not decide whether the senior managers’ firings were retaliatory or unlawful. NLRB Region 29 Director Teresa Poor said the judge’s order recognized Amazon’s “unlawful conduct” in that case. Her statement concerned the separate employee matter, not the managers’ terminations.
