Amazon cut roughly 200 U.S. jobs in its North America Stores division in January 2025, according to contemporaneous reports. The company described the move as a restructuring of parts of the team; the reported figure is approximate, and no team-by-team breakdown was made public in the cited coverage.
What happened in January 2025?
Amazon confirmed changes affecting roughly 200 employees in its North America Stores division, GeekWire reported on January 16, 2025. The Information also put the number at about 200. Retail Dive described the cuts as reaching both physical-store and e-commerce operations in North America.
This was a staffing change within one division, not a report that Amazon closed 200 stores or cut 200 employees across the entire company. It is also distinct from Amazon’s larger 2023 corporate layoff rounds, which GeekWire reported totaled 27,000 workers.
What reason did Amazon give?
An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire: “We’ve adjusted parts of our North America Stores team because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities.” The spokesperson added: “As part of these changes, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles, and we’re committed to supporting affected employees through their transition.” GeekWire did not name the spokesperson.

“About 200” is the figure reported by GeekWire and The Information, not a confirmed final tally. Neither report gives an exact count. Accordingly, the available reporting supports describing the January 2025 cuts as roughly 200 U.S. employees, but not a more precise number.
