Who Were the Richest Actresses of Old Hollywood? What the Records Show

A period list names ten of Hollywood’s richest women, but no comparable fortunes or ranking method survives in the cited record. Mary Pickford is the best-documented case, with striking salary growth and a lasting business stake.

Mary Pickford is the strongest documented example of an exceptionally wealthy actress from Old Hollywood, but the available records do not establish a definitive ranking of the era’s richest stars. A Hedda Hopper clipping cataloged by the Charlie Chaplin Archive names ten women as “Hollywood’s Ten Richest Women”; it gives no comparable fortunes, valuation date, or ranking method. The list is evidence of contemporary reputation, not a verified leaderboard.

Who appeared on Hollywood’s period list of richest women?

The Charlie Chaplin Archive catalogs Hedda Hopper’s “Hollywood’s Ten Richest Women,” naming Irene Dunne, Marion Davies, Greta Garbo, Mary Pickford, Shirley Temple, Norma Shearer, Corinne Griffith, Norma Talmadge, Sonja Henie, and Paulette Goddard. The record documents the list, but it does not provide the women’s fortunes or explain how Hopper arrived at the selection or order. See the Charlie Chaplin Archive catalog record.

“Old Hollywood” spans several generations of screen careers, and this list reflects that breadth. It should not be read as a ranking of actresses by audited lifetime earnings, estate value, or present-day purchasing power.

Why Mary Pickford is the best-documented wealth case

Pickford’s rise illustrates why an actress’s paychecks alone do not tell the whole financial story. The Mary Pickford Foundation chronology records her weekly salary increasing from $500 in 1913 to $1,000 in 1914, $2,000 in 1915, and $10,000 in 1916. PBS’s American Experience independently records the $500 weekly contract in 1913 and says she negotiated successive increases. These are nominal dollars from the years stated, not values adjusted for inflation. Mary Pickford Foundation chronology; PBS American Experience biography.

More consequentially, Pickford co-founded United Artists in 1919, produced films through her own company, and retained her United Artists interest until the mid-1950s, according to the Foundation’s account. That combination of performing, production, and ownership distinguishes her case from one measured only by a salary figure. Mary Pickford Foundation: About Mary Pickford.

The Foundation also quotes historian Kevin Brownlow saying, “Mary herself did an incredible amount for charity, the full extent of which will probably never be known.” It reproduces a 1924 Photoplay observation by Herbert Howe: “Mary Pickford the actress is completely overshadowed by Mary Pickford the individual.” These comments offer context for her public and philanthropic life, but they are not financial measurements. What published estimates say—and what they cannot prove

A 1979 Washington Post obituary reported that Pickford’s income in her best years was estimated at more than $1 million and that her worth had been estimated at $30 million to $50 million. The obituary’s wording marks these as estimates; it does not present an audited balance sheet or a probate total. Those figures should remain attached to the obituary and its 1979 context. The Washington Post obituary, May 30, 1979.

A later Celebrity Net Worth retrospective gives estimated net worth at death of $32 million for Greta Garbo, $20 million for Mae West, and $40 million for Pickford. These are secondary estimates, not comparable estate records; the article also gives inflation-adjusted conversions, but the underlying figures do not establish a consistent valuation method across the women. Rank #3

These numbers measure different things at different dates: reported career income, an estimated worth during Pickford’s later life, and modern websites’ estimates of net worth at death. None supplies a consistent basis for comparing all the women on Hopper’s list.

Why a famous fortune is not the same as a documented estate

Pickford revised her will in 1971 to leave the bulk of her estate to a foundation, according to the Mary Pickford Foundation. After the estate was probated in 1982, directors activated the existing Mary Pickford Foundation. This records the destination of much of her estate; it does not independently establish the total value of her wealth. Mary Pickford Foundation: About the Foundation.

For a meaningful comparison of rich actresses, a source would need to define what it counts—career earnings, ownership and investments, net worth at a specified date, or probate estate—and use that same method for each person. The historical list and surviving estimates do not meet that standard. Pickford stands out not because the sources prove she ranked first, but because they document both extraordinary salary growth and substantial business ownership.
